Yikes! Did I walk into a parallel universe here? I'm sure I went into H C Kitchen Cabinet, but I don't really understand the very high reviews on Yelp.
I walked into this place for a quote on cabinets. First off, their showroom is quite small and limited. There's only two rooms. Well, really only one because the back room is tiny and only shows some tile samples. To boot, the back room with the tiles is kept in the dark without any lights so you can barely see anything, much less attempt to decide on how the tile would look in your home. The first room has displays of cabinet doors and a few faucets. While the selection of cabinet doors was nice and they had variety, there were no displays set up of completed cabinet structures. You couldn't see what the final product would look like. You could only see the doors which were set up on display shelves. In every other store I've been to there would be at a minimum one complete set of cabinet displays. Otherwise, how can you really tell what the final product will look like? I know this is SF and its prime, costly real-estate, but all other shops have constrcuted displays. Not to have one already raises red flags for me. I start thinking about what you're trying to hide.
From what I can tell, there are no brand name cabinets sold here. They are just cabinets imported from China, which is ok if that's what you're looking for and if you're comfortable with that. Seeing as how I've never bought cabinets from this place before and I didn't have the opportunity to see a set of cabinets fully built in their store, I didn't have that comfort level.
I went about getting an estimate anyway just because I was already in their store. I spoke with the one guy at the counter who spoke English, but honestly he looked like a kid. It seemed as though there was one guy running the store who spoke Chinese and he may have been there with his two kids. The one kid took down my measurements and proceeded with the quote --- all hand-written mind you! In this day and age, who produces cabinet quotes and designs by hand any more? Also, the total estimate that the kid wrote up for me was on paper that had the name of another company at the top of it. Wow, that might be a way to save a few pennies, but it comes off as completely unprofessional.
All of this I might have understood if they were simply selling cheap imported cabinets. I was shocked when I got the totals for my kitchen. Um, $5K for non-brand name, non-custom cabinets for a kitchen of under average size? You have got to be joking with me! That is not cheap. I had gone to plenty of other shops that also sold similar products from China and at none of them did I get such a high estimate. It was usually between $2K-$3K. To pay $5K for kitchen cabinets at a place that doesn't even invest in a decent computer design or estimate application for use with their customers is ridiculous.
I'm glad for those Yelpers who have received what they feel are good cabinets here, but for a newcomer who has no personal experience with them, I just can't put my blind faith and trust with this vendor at a potential cost of $5K or more. read more
