Conveniently located on the first floor of CHLA, the HBO Cafe offers a place to grab a bite when you're stuck spending the day at the hospital or between appointments. We've tried some of the other items, and they were okay, but you can't go wrong with the basics. So we tend to stick to chicken fingers and fries. We did try the onion rings on this last visit, and they were surprisingly good! This is by no means a gourmet meal, but it's actually pretty good considering it's hospital food. Their prices are okay too, but keep in mind you pay for any extras, like ranch. So if you have the child that likes a gazillion packets of ranch, just pay attention to how much they're actually getting lol. There is usually a fair amount of seating and you can take your food outside to the courtyard as well for some fresh air. The tables could be cleaner, but overall this isn't a bad option for a meal. read more

Located on the 1st floor of Children's Hospital of LA (CHLA). Was surprised at the quality of food! Thought it was going to be just basic hospital food but they have different stations where cooks make your order fresh from scratch! During breakfast they have a build your own omelet station and another that offers pancakes, hash browns, burritos, etc. There are also many other stations where you can get grab and go items! This is your typical hospital cafe but with a bit of a nicer feel. They are open 23 hours a day. The grill was open when we came which was around 7pm on a Thursday. Food was inexpensive and they make it fresh for you. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and my husband had the hamburger. Chicken breast patty was dry and overcooked. We also had the onion rings which was the best of everything we got. Next time, I would rather try one of the pre-packed Thai noodles in the fridge. They looked pretty good but is a little more $$ and not made fresh. read more

HBO Cafe is located on the first floor of Children's Hospital LA. It has salad bar, hot grill items, breakfast breads/cereal, ice cream, coffee, juices, etc... for more than the price it is worth. I heard that recently the McDonalds, their only competition, was no longer at this hospital and so their prices went up and their quality went down. The patrons of this cafe are usually patients, their families, nurses, doctors or even the donors (who stop by and give blood/money/toys). I would think that the staff would be nicer or to the least not rude and grumpy. The staff here are amongst the worst I have ever encountered. They had a decent-size seating area, but it is FILTHY... I can't believe a hospital cafeteria can be so dirty. I wipe down my tables and sometimes dust off my chairs before I sit down. The patient rooms are limited to visitors so some times the older and healthier kids are able to come down here to have a short meal with their families. There is wifi as a courtesy of the hospital, but only three outlets that are by the microwaves that often don't work. I have spent some of the most depressing moments of my life in this cafeteria, not even exaggerating. I lived off of their Don Francisco's Coffee ($1.61/20oz) and Vitamin Water ($1.64). **Pro Tip: Keep your receipt for half priced refills on Coffee and Fountain Soda beverages.** For Christmas I had their Cheese Quesadilla ($2.10) with a side of Sour Cream/Salsa ($0.50) and some Sweet Potato Fries ($2.29) to share with my aunties who each had a Grilled Cheese ($3.74) with Mushrooms ($0.29) and Spinach ($0.29). It was quite tasteless and overpriced for what we got. I got smarter by the time New Years came along so we picked up some Roasted Pig, Dim Sum and Banh Mi on our way to the hospital and all I bought from the cafe was a lovely Butterfinger Ice Cream Bar ($2.00). Nevertheless HBO Cafe provides a conveniently place to get food and a decent amount of tables and chairs. Uh, the food here is just ok. I pretty much just stick with the same: Burrito with pinto beans, rice, grilled onions, spinach, and guacamole and a side of sweet potato fries. The fries are not that great though. The burrito is relatively large and filling. I've also had their pasta with vegetables and marinara sauce, and their salad bar. I do not do McDonald's, which is also located inside of the hospital, so if i don't feel like walking to the nearby restaurants, I eat here when I'm in the hospital. read more

Thank goodness CHLA opened HBO cafe! It opened a couple years ago and is one of the nicest, if not the nicest hospital cafeteria in LA. They have a grill station, pizza station, salad/soup bar, rotisserie station, international station and coffee bar. They're open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Whatever you're craving, they'll most likely have it. Did I mention there's a waffle maker during breakfast hours? The prices are a little higher than most hospital cafeterias but it's worth it. I needed to beef up my last review because I know when I'm here with my baby its usually a tiring visit. As of 1/25/15 (Mc D's within CHLA closed),HBO is the only Cafe- it provides substance and juices up our day. Just don't expect gourmet, set your pickiness aside and it ain't all that bad. Starbucks kiosk is in sitting area so I'll usually grab a joe and veggies, fruit and egg salad Sammy from cafe. I only eat here because I work here. Before walking in to the HBO cafe, an agua fresca station allows you a fresh complementary drink, well more of a taste. The 2oz sample cups barely quench your thirst. Breakfast has an excellent variety. Everything you could want for breakfast, even pazole on certain days. The grill offers many made to order things if the buffet is not for you. I'd recommend the breakfast burrito. Lunch has many different options as well. The pasta bar on Thursday's is my favorite. Hot meals are hot or miss, often times the protein is very dry, but sometimes the sides are delicious. The sandwich's are always reliable, but the sandwich line does take quite a long time. They could afford to have a second person working in this area during the lunch rush. Expect to wait at least 10-15 mins. The salad bar is sub par. I always has mostly the same boring items. Options for proteins are very limited. Some of the soups are often missing protein and vegetables as well. You end up with a bowl of mostly broth. The pizza bar is not worth the price. The flatbread pizzas taste okay, but I wouldn't go for the slices. Kosher options and sushi are available. I have never tried them. I have tried the pre-made salad and I was disappointed. The staff is hit or miss. Some are excellent and make your meals with pride. Usually the service I pretty good during busy hours. On off hours, sometimes i can take a while before some helps you. You could be the only one standing there waiting for a sandwich and the person making decides at that moment to restock things at a glacial pace before they help you. It's obvious who enjoys working who does not. The seating area of the HBO cafe appears new with modern touches. Floor to ceiling windows offer ample light. Movie posters line the wall showcasing the newest movies (and Turbo, a not so new movie and I don't understand why this poster has not been changed out). Tables are usually clean and courtesy sanitizing wipes are always available for you if they are not. Colorful booths offer privacy and comfort. Outdoor seating provides a wonderful place for families with small children to enjoy the playground. Not very much shade, so be sure to have a hat or sunglasses. Two vending machines offer plenty of options for snacks and drinks. The Aromas coffee cart is quick even if it has a long. I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes for a drink. Friendly staff. I would recommend the 'dirty' green tea latte. Great for a quick mid day pick-me-up. Overall the HBO cafe deserves a 2 star rating. It's typical cafeteria food served in a new-age setting. Nothing special here just a hospital cafeteria with an HBO sign and a few movie posters. They have walk up and grab food as well as some quick prep or already made hot items items like pastas, pizza, and soup. Little costly for the quality of food. We spent $35 for 2 adults and 2 kids. Family had a fresh made sandwich, a wrap, chicken strip meal, and a burger. The food was edible but really plain and not seasoned. I'm surprised the HBO cafe only has 3 stars on Yelp. This is the cafe located at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and for all intents and purposes, it's a solid spot for food! I usually get the cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. But they have a substantial amount of options here people. In the refrigerated foods they have sandwiches, wraps, and salads that are perfect for grabbing something quick. The grill has a whole selection of commonly found items: chicken quesadillas, burgers, chicken fingers, cheesesteak, BLTs, burritos, grilled cheeses, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches. You can select your toppings and sides there too, and the chefs are pretty speedy. They also have a sandwich station a la Subway, with all the typical foods you'd find there like ham, salami, turkey, cheese, and on some occasions there is another station for hot food, typically an entree meal of chicken, beef, or pasta, etc. They have soda machines, bottled water, Vitamin Water, Starbucks bottled fraps and iced coffee, gatorade, and the like. They also have a small assortment of pastries, cookies, and chips to choose from. Not to mention the full salad bar with dressings and toppings. For the variety of foods alone I think they deserve a high rating. But the prices are also not outrageous, its kept clean, and I've never had any problems with my food. read more

They provide a great choice of warm food to choose from, as well as refrigerated pre made food, drinks and coffee. The snack selection could be improved however. It's pretty expensive and by far a better deal to order a $5 parent meal in your children's room. There are plenty of places to sit, and the area is kept clean. Due to my son being in the hospital on and off for the past year I have been stuck eating here. If I had rated the HBO Cafe last year I would have given it 4 stars, but their standards have plummeted. Numerous times I have experienced food being completely mislabeled. The salad bar has fruit flies and the breads/pastries have been old/stale every time I have tried them. They have increased their prices since the closing of McDonald's and decreased the quantity and quality of their food. You can order delivery from some near by restaurants but it's all $$$. I will say it is better than most hospital cafeterias. read more

This review is primarily of the folks at the grill & the cashiers. The grill area is my favorite. They're all friendly folks working hard to fill that rumbly void in your belly. They make everything from burritos and wraps to grilled cheese sandwiches, veggie burgers, melts, quesadillas, fries of three different varieties and then some. The lunch crowd seems to mostly be the Children's Hospital Los Angeles staff. It's kinda nice. You'll see surgeons, pediatric doctors, wound care specialists, social workers, clinical care coordinators, etc. You may even run into me. The grill folks always do a lovely job of putting my meal together quickly and accurately, important because not only would I like exactly what I ordered but most importantly, because of my SEVERE food allergies. If I ask for a glove change even, just for safety, they'll happily oblige. There are a few cashiers that have gotten to know me. It's always nice to see them at 06:30 when I'm grabbing a quick and early breakfast before heading up to the patient's room. We're not at the point where we ask about each other's kids but we do check in on one another. read more

I been staying at the children's hospital in Los Angeles they have a cafe were families and staff can purchase food. In the deli bar they sell sandwiches kind of like subway style you can choose cold or hot your kind of bread, meat, chesse, and veggies. They have a spinach tortilla and you can make it into a wrap in love choosing the grilled chicken and it's delicious. In there grill station they have chicken quesadillas, pizza,chesse burgers , burritos and they are good as well.
