i LOVE hazel. the things there are so cute and unique. Perfect place to find gifts for bdays or christmas. i purchased a pair of earrings there recently for a friends bday and she loved em. Sure, it's not cheap there but i think it's worth the originality. OH BTW, they gift wrap for free :) Just make sure you take the receipt out of the bag. It is a pretty great place to go for unique gifts and cards! I have found a lot of great gifts for friends that are kind of one of a kind or things that people have never seen before. They have cards and funky jewelry and they range in all prices. I got my friend a belt buckle made out of the center of a center of a vinyl record...and she totally loved it. Hazel just might be the first "gift store" I've entered that truly has great (and not cheesy) gifts! They carry handmade and local jewelry, Chicago-themed items, and even a few pop culture goods from shows like Doctor Who. I especially love their wooden clocks. They also carry Skunkfunk, an eco-friendly designer from overseas. I'm definitely going to grab a Skunkfunk bag the next time I have extra money. The staff at Hazel was very kind but not pushy- just right. I didn't need any help, but witnessed them assist a woman looking for jewelry recommendations and gift wrapping. I love Hazel. It's perfect for picking up quick gifts and/or cards. I even go in when I don't need to buy for other people. It's just so stinkin' cute. There's never been a time that I've walked out empty handed. Their candle selection is amazing (almost like my METS but not quite). Quick question: does anyone else find it impossible to walk out of here empty handed?? I definitely have a weakness for little places like this: packed wall to wall with unique stationary, cards, purses and wallets and, of course, jewelry. Oh the Jewelry! This place is great for last min gifts or if you want to get a unique gift. I love their stationary/card displays. I found the cutest Eiffel Tower thank you cards that say 'Merci' on them. I am down to my last 2 so I am hoping they still carry them. I went here during X-Mas time and they had beautiful ornaments and decorations. I could seriously spend major money in here...have to have a lot of will power!! The staff was very nice and helpful. My go-to place for gifts/cards/unique finds/special presents to myself. I love Hazel -- it's just so adorable and they carry great finds ranging from jewelry to aprons to children's books. It's a fun place to spend 30 minutes wandering around and exploring. Also, they have the best greeting cards ever. Ever. If you go a few doors down the clothing store is also awesome. You'll find some really great items ranging in price from splurge to great deals. It's not one of those boutiques that you love until you see the price tag, it's actually really reasonable. Everyone who works here is incredibly nice (both in the clothing store and the greeting store), I've never had a bad experience. AND if you buy a gift they'll warp it up for free! This place is heaven. It is my go to place for gifts and cards and little somethings for myself. A lot of the bags and what not are above my price range and over all it is not cheap, but its reasonable and better prices than most boutiques. Much of their accessories are very affordable and I almost always go in there for a wry, edgy card or an ironic baby shower gift and walk out with a unique $20 necklace. I love stopping by Hazel on my way home from the Montrose Brown Line stop. It's perfect if I need a little shopping buzz after a long day at work. They have really cute, unique items and while some of it can be pricey there are definitely good deals to be found (jewelry). If you are looking for special gift wrap or cards this is the place to go! I only wish they were open past 7 on weeknights so I had more time on my way home. They never make me feel like they are trying to kick me out if I'm there a little after 7- very good customer service. Support your local shops!! read more

This place is really ideal, first it's not too big, but just the right size when you're in a hurry to buy the coolest gift around. Then, it has such a variety that for sure you'll find something for someone. I found a diaper bag from the brand UCHI that it's hard to find in Chicago. Ok, how have I not reviewed Hazel yet? Wait, maybe because I've only done 7 reviews, 3 of which were earlier this week ... But let's get back to business. For my first FIVE STAR review (shock! awe!), I must give props to this great little place. I live in the neighborhood and come here every time I need a special little something for a friend, or I'm restocking my greeting card stash. Because seriously, you can't come in here without finding a card for literally everyone you know, so you will leave with a stash. Guaranteed. Having worked in a terrible awful gift shop in a former life, I can appreciate when it's done right, and Hazel gets it right. Everywhere I turn, I find something beautiful that catches my eye, and my intended short trips to Hazel turn into a perusal of every item that they sell. Their jewelry in particular (and there's a ton of it) draws me in every time. But be warned, if you see something that you love but that's maybe not what you came in for, BUY IT ANYWAY!! This place is awesome! They always have interesting finds, fabulous cards, and one of a kind jewelry. The even have interesting fresh flowers that are different and reasonably priced. Went in to find a trinket to mail to the mother-in-law, and I found an adorable little jack-o-lantern that cackled and the awesome people at Hazel wrapped my tiny $3 purchase. For free. Hazel is an eclectic treasure trove of unique gifts located in Ravenswood, off the Brownline's Montrose stop. If you're looking for a special gift for someone dear, I highly recommend this precious boutique. Pros: Unique finds, beautifully decorated, friendly staff. Cons: Bit on the pricey side. Hazel has a cozy atmosphere. It's divided into roughly three rooms and it is packed with discoveries around every corner. Nestled in baskets, hanging on walls, even hiding in plain sight on tightly packet shelves, there is always something interesting to engage. While most popular for its unique lines of jewelry, fragrant candles, and artisan letterpress cards, Hazel caries gifts for the guys too. I particularly like their unique hats and wallets. The thing I love about Hazel is with every season comes exciting new products to explore so I find myself stopping in often to check out what's new! When it comes to service I've always found Hazel's staff to be friendly and helpful. However, during the holiday it can be so busy its hard to get assistance when you need it. I've found Hazel can be a bit pricey depending on what your looking at. But its to be expected with all those unique and hand-crafted items. Overall, a great boutique, worth a visit. read more

Let me begin by saying that I hate chain cards (think Hallmark). They never say what I really want to say. I end up frustrated and settle on some sappy, cheesy card that doesn't really represent my intended sentiment. If you feel the same you should know that Hazel is my personal greeting card provider of choice. I go every few months and stock up on unique thank-you, birthday and congratulatory cards to which I am proud to affix my return address. A true hidden gem and one of the best gift shops/boutiques in the city-- and hands down THE VERY BEST in the neighborhood. The prices are incredibly reasonable and the jewelery is fantastic! For my birthday a few years ago my boyfriend got me a beautiful satin fabric covered pocket-watch locket with little beads along the chain. Let me start by saying my wife and I have been shopping at Hazel for 8 or 9 years, and have spent a lot on gifts over that time. When it came to birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions, Hazel was my go-to place for gifts. Until this morning... I was running errands with my 22-month old son and thought we would drop by Hazel to find a Mother's Day gift for my lovely wife. We were a little on the early side, so we went next door and grabbed a cup of coffee. After coming out we took a stroll down the street to kill the remaining minutes before the store opened for the day. It was rather cold outside and my son was growing restless. So I headed over to the store and waited for the doors to open. Shortly after we arrived a woman came up and stood by the door with us. She was friendly and said hello to my son. Then she made a phone call to who I assume was someone inside the store. At 10:58 a man came to the door and unlocked it letting the woman inside. As I began to push the stroller toward the door the man closed the door and locked it! I think he mouthed 'sorry' to me, but I didn't care at that point. I told him I'd take my business else where and may have used a few other choice words too. It was 2 minutes before the store opened! I have spent hundreds [ if not thousands] on gifts there for almost as long as I have lived in this great city. It's frustrating to be literally left out in the cold after years of loyalty to the store. I will not patronize Hazel in the future. read more

OMG, I think I just landed in my dream store. Hazel combines a few of my favorite things: stationery/paper, soaps (cute stuff), and jewelry. I spent so much time here looking around amazed at their selection. I couldn't resist their sale rack. There I found some moving postcards since it's in our near future plans. I also found some cute Golden reprinted children's books. While perusing around, I stumbled on their amazing jewelry selection. There were about a million pieces that were so great and awesome. They had a lot of local designers as well as others. I saw some Figs and Ginger jewelry from a designer out of Asheville, NC who specializes in recycled, patina sterling silver jewelry. I fell in love with a delicate sage green pearl necklace from Deana Rose jewelry, another local designer. Yeah, I love this store. I'll be a repeat customer for sure!!! read more

I'm a cheapskate, so I don't often frequent boutiques, but I do like this place. First, the neighborhood where Hazel is located is pretty chill, which I do appreciate, as there aren't a bunch of double-wide strollers running over my feet every other minute (ouch!). Parking is reasonable and it's the only game goin' on over there in terms of what they are sellin', so this place really stands out. Anyway, I have a friend, Rae Rae, for whom I always buy jewelry. When I need to commemorate some occasion in her life, I come here. Thus far, I have consistently had success in finding something fun for her. The prices run the gamut, so you can spend $20 or you can spend $200+. Again, I tend to lean towards the lower end of that range, and Hazel comes through with a decent selection for us misers. I've been shopping at Hazel for years and turned my now-husband (then boyfriend) on to it when we first met to make sure I would always get fabulous gifts. Beautiful necklaces, awesome wrapping paper, great bags, funny cards, and more. I had another great experience there recently that I just have to relay. I purchased a bag from there about two months ago. It's a really great piece made from the same material as Argentinian bus seats. It had bright colors, a long strap, and lots of exterior and interior pockets. On the tag it claimed that it was durable and would last "forever," which is great for me because I'm not one of those girls who switches bags every day. After using the purse for about a month one of the pocket zippers broke which was a bummer, but I figured I could take it to someone to get fixed without much cost. I continued using it and noticed that the tab holding the strap on was starting to fray, but I kept right along using it. Of course after about 2 weeks the tab was nearly eaten through and I was afraid the whole strap would be useless. I debated about returning because it had been two months, but I felt like a $150 purse should last longer than that. I went timidly up to the counter and asked if they would exchange the bag, fully expecting that they may tell me to take a hike (in a nice way) or to contact the manufacturer. Nope. No questions asked they replaced my bag. They didn't have exactly the same style, but the new bag doesn't have tabs holding the straps on so I hope that it will last longer. Whatever the case, Hazel has firmly solidified my belief that they are the best little shop around. I love the personal feeling at a small, locally owned store and know that with Hazel's amazing customer service they will continue to succeed. read more
