We had the beet salad, carne (skirt steak special), and the best carrot cake I've ever eaten. The texture had some similarities to a tres leches cake, I think they soak in some sugar or honey water in/on it... it was super yummy! The cake had a homey, familiarity to it, but it also tasted like something completely new to me too. I loved it!! I will be in SLO every so often for work, my husband says it's the only place I need to come to, lol! No cons- mmmm, maybe make reservations, if possible. He explained the ingredients, and I gave him a thumbs-up to indicate that I was interested in ordering it. Perhaps the restaurant was too noisy for us to hear each other clearly. The waiter left the menus on the table but never returned to check whether I was ready to order. Eventually, I had to raise my hand to get his attention. When walked by our table he never checked to see if we needed more water or anything else. Based on my dining experiences, I would normally expect a server to return after leaving the menus to see whether the guests are ready to order. I found it unusual that this didn't happen. I don't want to jump to conclusions based on a single experience, and I cannot say for certain whether the service we received had anything to do with bias. However, the combination of these interactions left me feeling uncomfortable and wondering whether we were being treated differently. I kept calm and still tipped as a good human being. Life is too short to let people affect me. Hopefully, this was simply an off night, but unfortunately, our first impression was not a positive one, and the service left us with little desire to return.

I've been to Ember 3 or 4 times in the past 8 years, but another visit was overdue. - Overall: 4 - Location: 5 - Ambiance: 4 - Menu: 4 - Wine List Selections: 5 - Wine List Prices: 3 - Food: 4 - Service: 5 - Price and Value: 4 - Parking: 4 - Location: Convenient from Pismo Beach to Nipomo, but San Luis Obispo to Santa Maria is not too much of a stretch. - Ambiance: Rustic, yet contemporary. A wood fired pizza oven is just left of the entrance...a large bar is ahead on the right...wooden tables are arrayed throughout and there's an outdoor patio for nice weather. We sat at a table for 2 in the raised section toward the back since there's less hubbub away from the front. - Menu: Moderate in size with lots of creative sounding selections. We had 2 suggestions for improvement - Add soup and definitely a few more choices for vegetarians. - Wine List: Excellent, but no bargain. Ember has a really nice group of wines indicating it's been curated with a knowing eye. However, prices are twice - or more - what you'd pay in a store. - Food: Excellent...if a bit heavy. My wife and I shared 2 appetizers - Pepper Creek Farm Heirloom Tomatoes ($18) and Fried Green Tomatoes ($23). Both were very good, but many added ingredients overpowered the main feature: Tomatoes. My entree was Swordfish ($44). The piece if fish was fairly small, but the accompanying vegetables and sauces filled out my plate. "Bill S" took care of our table with a light yet knowing touch. - Price and Value: Reasonable. Our bill before tax and tip of $174 was about as expected for a nice meal. - Parking: Adequate. There's a lot in front of Ember which is fine when it isn't crowded. Otherwise, you might need to use a neighboring street. Ember is certainly worth a visit, but many of the dishes might offer more than what you'd prefer. Next time we'll get one of their famous pizzas.

Set in a funky little cabin in the seaside town of Los Osos is a little jewel of an Italian restaurant, Hazard's after a surf spot. Growing up in the NorthEast meant I ate at some fine Italian places from Nantasket to Greenwich Village, none finer. Two new dishes, Shrimp w/ Polenta & Sumac and Short Rib Tortellacci in a mustard cream sauce. Think of tortellacci as large tortellini. Just delicious, both dishes. Otherwise they have a full Italian menu of pastas and pizzas, salads, as well as a deep bench of fabulous desserts. If you haven't been, give it a go. read more
