We were looking to celebrate our new condo with an order of sushi, so I perused the offerings on a food-delivery app and Hayasee Hajime looked very promising.
I should've kept looking.
I ordered the Nigiri and Sashimi Combo ("10 nigiri, 10 sashimi assortment. Assortment is 6 salmon, 2 tuna, 2 tilapia, 4 salmon, 3 tuna, and 2 tilapia.") and the Maki Combo B ("6 Six California, 6 tuna, and 6 salmon"), with both combos also including side salad and miso soup.
The order took almost an hour to arrive even though the place is mere minutes away, so we were understandably quite eager to dig in. I took one bite of one of the California roll and it was immediately apparent something was very off. The sushi tasted sweet. Like dessert-level sweet. That's weird, I thought. I figured maybe something went wrong with that one piece, but no, that cloying, throat-burning sweetness was in everything that included rice. I have no idea if this was an effective the restaurant was striving for, but it was extremely unpleasant. I ate a few more bites and threw in the towel.
For me, sushi is tasty even when it's lousy. That's certainly not true of this place, however. What a waste of almost $60. read more
