Most of the time, the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting. My toddler lets her clothes hit the floor and we have to change her completely because someone else's urine is all over the floor. The toilet seats have poop on them, even the door handle is questionable. Why am I giving 4 stars? The staff!! No matter the time of day or the amount of people, they are always so nice! They interact with my kids and make jokes, always smiling and offering to help. It's funny because I have watched the same person interact with a truck driver who doesn't want to be bothered and they tone down the smiles and jokes. I'd stop here for gas and definitely stop here for some snacks, but go down the street to use the bathroom.

One machine was seemingly out of gas and would not dispense anything even after accepting payment. Sadly this was the one my colleague tried first. A third machine was not accepting payment on one side and had an out of service bag on the pump handle on the other side. Luckily, the last machine accepted payment and pumped gas very slowly. When stopping in Hawthorne for gas, I'd recommend going to a different station to avoid the hassle.

You can enter Hawthorne directly or via the other end of town using the bypass. There's plenty of gas stations to choose from, and for reasons I can't explain, I chose this Chevron station. My understanding is that most "Big Oil" stations are owned by independent businesses but subject to company rules regarding branding, appearance, etc. After filling up here, Chevron Corporate might want to take a closer look at this place. Here's what I noticed: - Street side price sign incomplete or broken. - Over half the pump stations were inoperable - Rest rooms were out of order. - Entire station looked unkept and dingy. After all this, there was no way I was going into the interior mini-mart space. But at least the pricing was competitive and the place we had lunch had clean rest rooms.

But it works just fine with the smaller older style ones. And this one is no different. Sure, it's not much to see or review when it comes to a cardlock type of fuel station. But at least I can say this one has a portable toilet! And as I said in my tip, the hoses are long here...and the retractors don't really do a good job of retracting so if you come in late at night, watch out you don't run over the hose. Normally these CFN places are great when it comes to working well and this one is no exception. All worked fine from card swipe to hanging up the hose.

But once you're inside you'll be glad for the break since service is warm and friendly, food selection is decent and the gifts are interesting. During winter the area can get pretty sketchy driving, so be forewarned. Lots of blowing snow and temps are much cooler. On the plus side the drive south will take you past a gorgeous lake and a quaint little frontier town.

Gas was high but I sorta expect that in places like this. We found the staff to be friendly and informative. Just as we were preparing to leave the owner came and told us we could not leave the van there, he didn't want us using one of his parking spaces. There were 15-20 open spots and the same when we returned. Admittedly he does not have to allow us to park there, but you would think for a place that charges $6.99 a gallon for gas and depends on tourists for the business they would be a little more friendly. We were preriding the route for a motorcycle tour we are bringing through next week, I guess we will take them to the Valero for fuel.
