When the coronavirus pandemic upended our wedding plans, my partner and I decided to still get married.  We wanted to keep our family safe, so we did our wedding over zoom in our living room. Since we had already booked Melanie for our wedding in November 2020, I thought it would be a great idea to use her for our zoom ceremony. Planning our living room ceremony was a bit difficult. We didn't know how the lighting would come across in the camera for our zoom guests and we were debating between having it in our living room or on our balcony. Melanie went above and beyond, she spoke to her photographer friends (for lighting purposes) and she was able to help us make our decision. She delivered the flowers in our building lobby all wiped down. She is super communicative and prompt. We had photos taken early in the morning for the morning light and the flowers were perfectly there waiting for us. When it came to our pieces, she did our ceremony flowers, boutonniere and bridal bouquet. She was able to create pieces exactly how I envisioned our special day. My wife and I were married last September and were very lucky to stumble upon Hawthorn Flower Studio as they were starting up. Melanie was awesome! She helped us with the color palate for our wedding (she gives great general wedding advice and introduced us to the world of pantone colors) and once we were closer to the date, met with us to talk through what we needed. She was very professional and open to how involved we wanted to be in choosing the types of flowers (My wife just ended up telling Melanie the colors, and after a sketch and proposal she sent to us, we let go of the reins. We were really pleased with the results). Melanie suggested choosing flowers that were in season and available at the flower market, and that worked for us, being the fledgling locavores that we are. Choosing the color and style but not knowing what type of flowers makes for a nice surprise, in fact. She ended up preparing bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids, boutonnieres for the groom and groomsmen, flowers for the cake, as well as boutonnieres and corsages for immediate family. On the day of the wedding Melanie arrived on time, delivered the prepared pieces, and decorated the cake as promised. She's super detailed oriented and has the artist eye, and every last flower was placed in exactly the right place. Melanie met the standards of even my perfectionist wife. ;) We couldn't have been happier with the flowers. In fact, several of our guests commented on how unique and beautifully chosen the selections were. My wife had wanted a more wildflower look that stayed true to the colors we had chosen, and Melanie did an awesome job finding a variety of flowers that matched the colors. Each piece was interesting, attractive, and well constructed. She even offered to give us all the extra flowers that were left over from the different pieces. I worked with Melanie to arrange my wedding flowers after seeing pictures online of her beautiful arrangements. She was prompt, professional, and quickly/patiently responded to all of my questions and concerns (even when I was making repeated changes to the arrangements requested!). I was planning a wedding from Georgia so everything was done via email and phone. She asked for pictures of arrangements I liked and created some examples and sent pics of how my arrangements might look. Flowers were pretty much the only wedding decor that really mattered to me. I asked for seasonal blooms + orchids in a loose, organic arrangement in a blush/deep red/fall color spectrum and she delivered all that - the arrangements looked stunning! Melanie also worked with my wedding coordinator to finalize the decor and other details. She is so creative and I wish I could have kept everything - we are drying my bridal bouquet, and some lucky guests were more than happy to take centerpiece arrangements home at the end of the night. read more

I was blown away by the creativity and professionalism of Hawthorn Flower Studio and, of course, the absolutely beautiful work. Melanie of Hawthorn was recommended to me by another local florist (which is always a good sign)! While I know relatively little about specific flowers and design, Melanie and I worked together to identify the aesthetic and colors that would work best with our outdoor wedding. From there, I let her work magic. The result was so far beyond my expectations (which were quite high to begin with) and multiple guests asked to take home one or more of the table displays. Melanie was our florist for our June commitment ceremony and we are so glad we found her. She was so wonderful and easy to work with. She came highly recommended and we entrusted her to take the lead for our flowers. She sourced local flowers and she picked the most unique combinations of flowers and plants for our pieces. I am a visual artist and am pretty hard to please, but her work blew me away. I was really inspired by her talent and creativity. Melanie did our flowers for our wedding at Jacuzzi Winery in Aug 2015. The flowers were perfect and within our budget. She even came by the bridal suite before the wedding to make sure that everything was what I envisioned. The two items that everyone kept talking about were the boutonnieres made from wine corks and flower wreaths that surrounded the candelabras on the tables. Melanie, the owner, is incredible. She has creativity, style, grace, and vision. She is easy to work with and truly incredible with flowers. We had a lot of ideas for my+my partner's wedding - some specific flowers, a feel we wanted - and she helped us form that into real life. For example, we explained that we were getting married by the ocean because we love the water, and then later were explaining how we were stuck on what to do for table settings. On the spot she came up with a vision of low bowls of water with rocks and floating flowers would match our love of water, which is just what we did, totally fit us, and looked great. The most beautiful thing at our wedding - other than my partner of course :D - was Melanie's flowers. They touched my heart in a way that I don't have words for. She is so gifted and really puts her best into what she does. Melanie was very flexible to work with. On some things we had very specific requests and she made them happen; on other things we had a general feel and she helped imagine them; on other things we were totally lost and she gave us direction. On the day of, she arrived on time with everything prepared to a T. She was the kind of vendor who we didn't worry for a moment, because she was always so on top of her game. She worked within our budget, and never "upsold" us or made things more expensive than they needed to be. We worked backwards from the money we had, and she figured out the most we could do with that. She's very, very unjudgemental - she doesn't come in with ideas about what's "right" and "wrong" for an event; she listens to you and then makes happen what you're looking for. If there were 10 stars I would give them to her. I wish that I threw more events that necessitated flowers so I could hire her again. I would recommend her to anyone, for any project. read more

Melanie was a floral dream come true. As much as the flowers, her ability to ask the right questions and help us to articulate what we wanted, and to harmonize with our colors, theme, and budget was superb. My mother surprised me for my wedding by managing all the flower arrangements with Melanie at Hawthorne. Little did I know that she was working with a master.  Melanie's flowers were my first impression when I walked into my wedding venue before all the guests arrived.  Bright colors of pink, orange and coral descended from tables, urns, and walking vines wove their way behind chairs in the courtyard for our ceremony. Baby peaches and cumquats accented the colors on the cocktail tables and small fern leaves adorned each table setting. My bouquet flowers was so unique that people kept asked me what species of flowers they were. No one had ever seen the deep wine smoke like flowers that set a background for bright flowers to pop. My wedding was otherwise incredibly simple except for Hawthorne's work. Her professionalism, perfectionism and ability to execute was top notch. read more

When my fiance and I eloped in mid-July, flowers weren't anywhere on our radar. We had scheduled a civil ceremony for San Francisco City Hall and were trying to keep it as simple as possible. In mid-July, I found out my brother and now sister-in-law were going to elope, 3 days before the event! I gave Melanie a quick call to see if she could put a bouquet and boutonniere together in such short time. She agreed and was great at listening to my description of my sister-in-law and creating a beautiful work of art of a bouquet!
