Sunrise from a cabin in September 21

We've been to Hawksbill three times with a fourth scheduled for early fall. We love the cabins and all the upgrades to both cabins and the property.

We loved drinking our coffee on the porch with this view

What an incredible property. We booked a quick trip away without kids and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hawksbill retreat. Our cabin was well appointed and clean. And the view of the mountains exceptional.

We absolutely loved our stay in Cabin 8 for our honeymoon. It has the best view of all the cabins and was perfectly romantic for the two of us. Throughly enjoyed the private hottub, only wish we weren't so tired every night and would've enjoyed the fire pit. While it was pricey, it was very cozy and worth it for our honeymoon. We will def recommend to others and return. (Our friends have already booked for January after seeing our pictures!)

It's the kind of place where you don't mind some nasty weather so you can hunker down in the comfort of the cabin.

Instead, we decided to get away for a long weekend in the mountains of western VA. I can't speak for the main house, but the Wooodland Cabin was a nice way to get away from everyone and spend time with your honey. The furnishings were woodsy, without being hokey, and with both a couch and dining room table you could easily hole up for a few days. Breakfast was delivered to our room, the outdoor hot tub was private and the owner was nice enough to help me set up a surprise vowel renewal (including a new ring). If I had a complaint, I'd say it's that the sign out front is not well lit and we drove right by the place twice. The owner also seemed a little overworked, but as her husband was serving in Iraq at the time we were there, it was certainly understandable. In the end, it's a great way to escape the DC metro scene without airport security or spending a ton of cash.

The owner truly cares about your stay and really pays attention to the little details. You are within a short drive of the Luray Caverns, skyline drive and the Shenandoah River. I highly recommend staying here as opposed to a local hotel in the area. Great service, great amenities and quiet.

White Fence Bed & Breakfast - They let us use the fire pit at night and we sat outside and played some games we had brought and had some wine! So relaxing!

It was wonderful to have a flexible and late check-in time as we hiked all day in Shenandoah Park. The cottage itself is PERFECT: very spacious and clean with everything you could need for several days. Mary & Dan have thought of & provided everything to make you feel at home and comfortable, i.e. wine opener and cutting board. It was nice to maintain your privacy because you had everything you needed inside your own cottage! Inside the mini fridge you will find waters, mini orange juices, little bags of trail mix, cheeses, and even mini bottles of white & red wine and more!!! I have stayed at many B&Bs and never experienced this level of included goodies- it was such a wonderful surprise! The location of the B&B is beautiful as well. Very convenient to Luray and the park. You can enjoy the lovely backyard on your private adirondack chairs or on the patio which has several rocking chairs and a fire pit. At 9:00am Mary & Dan knocked on our cottage door with breakfast and we were 'Wow'-ed again! The smoothies made with fresh-picked Sperryville, VA blueberries were my favorite. They accommodated my vegetarian needs perfectly. My fiance and I agreed that the breakfast was one of the best, if not THE best, we've had at a B&B, and we have stayed at some very expensive B&Bs. You get way more than your money's worth here! I highly recommend for a romantic, private weekend getaway. I couldn't have been happier with our stay at White Fence. We will be back.

I emailed her quite a few times before booking- she answered all of my questions and even gave me extra info based upon what I had asked. I told her the reason why we were coming and if I could do the wine basket add-on as a nice touch for when we arrived. Also to note, I had never been to this area before or rented a cottage like this, so I had no idea what to expect! When we arrived, the cottage was even better than the pictures (if that's possible). The cottage is quite large and definitely beats staying in a small, one room bed and breakfast or hotel. The cottage was beautifully decorated and VERY clean. So cozy with the fireplace, bed was extra comfy, everything really was just perfect! Knowing it was my boyfriend's birthday, Mary made a mini cheesecake and left it in the room for us! How thoughtful! Even left a nice birthday card and a couple extra muffins. FYI: her baking skills are top notch! Our continental breakfast consisted of toast, English muffins, fruit, baked goods, juice, plenty of coffee/tea/hot chocolate which is all in the room upon arrival. I can't say enough positive things about this cottage. Mary and her husband also own the local pub, Dubliners, and we ate there the first night. Food (and wine) was great! Overall a perfect birthday escape. Could not have asked for anything more! Many, many thanks to Mary and her husband. We will definitely be returning!

It was relaxing and it was close to the lodge, restaurants, and hikes. The campground was full, but it wasn't noisy. My campsite was in the B Loop, site 44. It's not a drive-in site. You need to walk about 50 meters, but the short trail to the campsite is well maintained and so was the campsite. It was very clean and flat for tent set-up. Each campsite has a table and a fire ring with a grill. There's also a locker to store food since the campground is in bear territory. Didn't see any bears, but some deer walked through my campsite. There are toilets walkable from the campsites. I don't like that the showers are elsewhere, next to the camp store. You will have to drive to the showers. It's $5 for 10 minutes. At the camp store, you can buy some fire starters, ice, wood, and a limited selection of snacks. Campsites are $30/night and get booked up months in advance. Each site fits one large tent and one medium tent and a max of two cars. There is no cell reception at the campsite. If you need cell service or wifi, you can go to the Big Meadows Lodge, which also has a bar and restaurant.

Bathroom is on the main floor. Bed room is upstairs. Must use a spiral staircase to get up and down. Over all we felt there was much privacy give there wasn't any curtains on any of the windows on the main floor. Super steep hill with hardly any lighting to get to your cabin after dark. Seeing how dirty things were really makes me wonder if the place had been properly cleaned before us getting there. We did reach out to management and their response was they would have sent someone out to "clean " all this up had they known sooner but they would go ahead and let the cleaning team know about these issues.... Also I'm not sure how this could be advertised for families but there is only one actual bed and it was a queen sized bed. I couldn't imagine a family staying here and being comfortable. I've stayed all over the country and throughout europe and I've never had hosts who cared so little about their guests. We were so looking forward to this trip! We paid a premium price of over $300 a night after it was all said and done, so we could have a private cabin with a private hot tub. It would've been a third of that with other hosts, but we paid more to have the hot tub. So imagine our distress when we arrived to our modest cabin to find a dirty, cold, hot tub. Wanting to stay positive, and not wanting to complain, we attempted to turn the temperature up. We couldn't seem to get it any warmer. So finally, I reached out to the host to suggest that perhaps the hot tub was broken. I asked nicely if they could come look at it. They refused to even come look at it and continued to imply that it's normal for a hot tub to be colder than human body temperature! My father installed and fixed hot tubs my whole life. I know when a hot tub is that dirty and that cold that there's something wrong with it. After far more arguing than could ever be considered professional on their part, they finally admitted that they had added cold water right before we were supposed to arrive. They did not bother to heat that water. They did not bother to clean the hot tub or replace all the water. They just filled it up a little with some cold water after the other guests left. First of all, eww, and second of all, how unfortunate. We paid extra for a hot tub and we couldn't use it for the first night of our stay. And it only got worse. We learned when we attempted to take a shower and brush our teeth that something funky was going on with their septic system. Anytime you turned on water in the cabin the smell of sulfur permeated the entire place. Enough to keep you sick to your stomach the entire weekend. When we laid down to go to bed, we looked up to see the ceiling, completely infested with stink bugs. They flew around us all night, landing on us, ensuring that we woke up regularly, jumping up and shaking bugs off of ourselves. We tried to convince ourselves that this is just what it's like to stay out in the wilderness, and to stay positive. We knew the hosts wouldn't bother to do anything about it after not caring that the hot tub wasn't working. So we managed to have a nice second day of our trip in spite of the bugs and the disgusting sulfur smell, and the lack of support from the hosts. but it was the third night and final night of our stay in which things became completely unacceptable. The power went out. The host did not call and worn us that the power was out. They waited until we had spent 30 minutes going around the house trying to figure out what was happening and finally messaged them. They said they were aware it was out and would let us know when it would come back on. No discussion about their apologies or a back up plan. We heard hours later that the power would be back on at nine. And heard shortly AFTER nine that no, in fact, the power would be off all night. These people that rent cabins for a living don't have back up generators? I'm sure they do for their house. I'm sure they were very comfortable. But as for their guests? nope. By that point, it was pitch black. We had been out during the day so our phones were nearly dead. We had no light source. And we couldn't get the heat source working. It took us hours of being freezing to finally get it to turn back on without being able to see. By that point, we were cold and frustrated. Stumbling around a cabin with a spiral staircase in the pitch black, with no entertainment, no light source, and no ability to see the bugs before they flew in our face. You can imagine how many injuries we got. My partner busted his knee on the furniture so bad just trying to get downstairs to use the bathroom that he may have to go see a doctor. We slept terribly, because without an alarm, we couldn't guarantee that we would be up on time to pack and take our own garbage to the dump. Since they charge a fee for every bag you leave behind and expect you to basically clean the place. We got very little sleep and finally the sun rose and we could get out of there. I nicely reached out to the host and explained what a rough night we had and how distressed we were that we weren't able to use any of the amenities we paid for for two out of three of the nights of our stay. I requested that they simply refund one night of our stay and we would be happy. They refused. They repeated that the power going out wasn't their problem, they aren't required to supply a back up generator or lanterns. They aren't required to ensure the hot tub is usable. They don't care that we're unhappy. So I have returned home more stressed than when I left. The stink bugs got into our luggage. Excuse me while I vomit. DONT STAY HERE
