Okay, honestly the landscapes are indeed blurring together a bit, but this was such a nice place! So much fun navigating through the terrain here. There's a system of trails, and landscape is also not all flat but replete with valleys and smaller peaks. Lots of cacti of course, and other shrubs and plants too. First time checking out Hawes Trail System today! Located conveniently within the city, making it easy to visit, even on a weekday with an early start! There is a parking lot, right across the street from the trailhead! Though down the road not too far, quick ride if you're on a bike, it seems people may park near the Walgreens - Though Walgreens does enforce a 60 min time, probably for this reason, but there is a mobile bike station at the lot next to it, which is an awesome touch, and I am sure utilized on busy weekends. The lot had ample space this morning though, so definitely check that out first! The trail has a lot of different route options, so make sure to take a picture of the map or download Alltrails or some other app to keep on track. Though there on markers on the corners, it could be easy to get on the wrong path. As some other reviews said, it is not the most beautiful hike, but does have some scenic parts. There were a lot of hikers on the route today and a lot of mountain bikers. Lots of up and downs and rocky trails. The map is marked and routes are rated accordingly, so worth checking out as you plan your route! read more

Jaw droppin, cardio pumpin, drive train spinin, suspension popin, no stoppin as I'm trippin 'round bitchin trails on a fatty plus. "Get some booty on that fatty carbon" SC Tallboy blastin cross eye knockin Sonoran desert flora & fauna, gonna pedal in flow motion, quads burnin as wheels turnin slowly up to the top, higher. Then descendin like ya ridin pants on fire, faster, leanin into curves, coastin slidin by Teddy Bear cholla, Saguaro, Ocotillo, goin hard pack sandstone, goin fatty tires spittin DG, rippin through washes, big knoobies grippin and pop pop popin on the rock gardens rockin & rollin---look out for the hikers, single tracker MT bikers 10 to 15 to 20 miles or more I suppose, who knows? Fun place to saddle up! In my 3 rides here fast furious fat tire fun in the OMG Arizona sun! Oops, today overcast! Here is how to access Hawes trailhead: at Mcdowell Rd and Power Rd traffic light, go north 2.7 miles cross the canal and look left at dirt parking lot. Trails across road. I still haven't gotten to all of them yet! I would recommend not doing the fenceline trail portion because there is no really good place to park to access it. My trail guide took me to a Walgreens pharmacy after which I had to cross a major road to get across to a firebreak that parallels the main road. That area can be sketchy as I walked past more than a few homeless camp sites. Luckily they weren't awake yet! It took me about 45 minutes to reach the actual trail network---there is a hard right turn on the map that shows a trail going in to the national forest area, but I didn't see one. It might already be fenced in. Bottom line, don't do the fenceline portion unless you like doing a death march on a fire break and on the side of a major highway. You have to walk perilously close to the road to cross the bridge over the aqueduct. The rest of the trail is a lot of fun, though it can be tricky--I got turned around a number of times and had to backtrack on every trip there. The good points are the trail is not heavily trafficked if you get there early enough and there is a wonderful view of the painted desert at nearly every turn. The bad points are it is hard to find your way around the trail network and, while there are some decent climbs, there is not one ahah moment on the route when you know you've reached the top. Came here for a run, trails were mostly marked but some weren't marked too clearly. Lots of bikers going counterclockwise and I was going clockwise so had to step aside quite a few times. Not a bad trail for running but it would be boring to walk this trail as the scenery wasn't amazing. read more

I think this is part of the Usury mountain range but it was on the far end so I created a new entry. My google map search brought me here, looking for hiking trails, but it seems like it is more popular as a mountain biking range. There isn't much signage, people pull over in a little clearing across the street and cross the highway (dangerous I guess, some lady fell off her bike trying to get up the hill while I was watching). The trails are lovely, there were some hikers there late in the day, it looks like a big network of hilly trails going around a lake and a scenic backdrop of rocks and desert plants read more

I love this system of trails. I can't get enough of the varied, winding terrain and amazing Sonoran desert scenery. The trail markings are even improving. The best way to navigate these trails is with the trailforks app. The only thing I don't love is the very recent change to the parking that was previously available at the top of the hill on Bush Highway after the canal. The dirt lot was used by the public for years without a problem, but it appears that the fine folks at SRP(?) decided to fence the entire lot off, so the public no longer has ready access to the Bush Highway trailhead for the Hawes system. I have asked around, but nobody seems to know why the lot was suddenly shut down. I suppose SRP wanted to show everyone who's the boss though. I'm very sad about that. Still, if you have the extra time, I suppose you should access the Hawes Trail system by parking way back by Walgreens, or using the Las Sendas trailhead entrance. Not so handy for hikers & runners. read more
