After getting a root canal on a tooth that had suffered from a traumatic fall and landed on my mouth, I found myself still experiencing extreme sensitivity on that tooth a couple of weeks later after the root canal. I reached out to my dentist and as advised, made a follow up appointment with the endodontist. It was before the New Year's and understand the challenges of scheduling appointments during the holidays but was able to secure an appointment with Dr. Howard Kang at their Aiea office within the first week of January. Located of the 1F of Westridge Shopping Center in Aiea, this is one of the four Hawaii Endodontics LLC (HE) offices. The other 3 are located in Kailua, Kapolei and in Honolulu (Hale Pawaa). I arrived just before my scheduled appointment where the female receptionist checked me in. She was friendly and made me feel at ease which was much appreciated when I've been concerned about my tooth with uncertainty. I didn't sit down more than 5 minutes before the dental assistant called my name and escorted me to an examination room. This assistant is a seasoned staff where not only professionally, she engaged conversation personally and made me feel comfortable. She commented on my Trader Joe's mini tote bag and how she was gifted one but ended up giving it away to her relative who really adored them. Shortly after, Dr. Howard Kang came into the room to assess my condition. He commented on how my lip healed nicely and proceeded to conduct several tests to determine my teeth condition. To our delight my teeth responded well by not experiencing any pain. I advised Dr. Kang that it's just a little sensitive which is natural after the trauma I experienced. I'm to allow more time for the tooth to settle and heal. My next follow up appointment is in 6 months with Dr. Kang. For the time being I'm advised to avoid using that tooth to chew and to allow more time to settle and heal. In closing, I'm very pleased with HE for such great professionals and staff who take care of me. They have been educational yet sincere and supportive in my recovery process. 2026 #5 read more

5 stars -- Root canal redemption! I never thought I'd be writing a positive review about needing a root canal, but here we are -- all thanks to Dr. Shaikh and the amazing team at Hawaii Endodontics. I'd never had a cavity before, so when my general dentist told me I had a big one that likely needed a root canal, I was honestly in disbelief -- and pretty anxious. The words "root canal" alone had me imagining the worst. Thankfully, a trusted friend referred me to Dr. Shaikh for a second opinion, and I'm so grateful they did. From the moment I walked into the clinic, I felt cared for. The front desk staff greeted me warmly, and Lynn, the nurse, was an absolute angel. She noticed I was nervous (even though I tried to play it cool!) and immediately made me feel comfortable -- offering me water and making sure I had everything I needed. Dr. Shaikh was kind, calming, and incredibly clear in explaining what was going on with my poor tooth (spoiler: it was super infected) and what my options were. He made the whole thing make sense without overwhelming me. When we decided to go ahead with the root canal, my anxiety started creeping back in -- but it was short-lived. Honestly? It wasn't scary at all. Dr. Shaikh made sure I was fully numb, checked in with me frequently during the procedure, and adjusted things if I felt even a hint of discomfort. And best of all -- it didn't hurt. At all. After the procedure, he walked me through everything he found (infection: gnarly, but conquered!) and explained my aftercare clearly. I had mild soreness once the numbing wore off, but the ibuprofen he prescribed took care of it easily. The aloha spirit is real at this clinic. I never felt rushed, never felt like "just another patient." Everyone there genuinely cared. Even the music was calming -- and Lynn's soothing singing voice could be its own Spotify playlist. :) I hope I never need another root canal, but if I do, I'm 100% going back to Dr. Shaikh. I had to see Dr. Shaik again after I saw him earlier this year (at his town location) for some tooth sensitivity after I had a root canal from another endodontist. Here are some keywords I use to describe Hawaii Endodontics and Dr. Shaik: - PAIN FREE. Yes, less pain than a regular annual cleaning!! If you think I am kidding I am the type that hyperventilates and acts like they are dying with a small cut on the finger. Paper cuts make me scream also. - PROFESSIONAL. I've had root canals done before and I knew this first root canal done by the another endo didn't take. I tried to press Dr. Shaik to ask if the first one was a flop, but he had nothing bad to say, about anyone. He just stated the facts and what he was going to do to help me get rid of the pain. His entire staff and assistant were also super professional, but friendly. - FRIENDLY. It makes a world of a difference when you're new to the world of root canals, so you're already nervous. I wasn't nervous because this is now my 5th root canal. Everyone in the office was super nice! Dr Shaik and his assistant kept asking me if I was OK laying on the chair, and if I needed any water or if I needed to get up and stretch before the procedure. - HONEST. Dr. Shaik is super honest. He won't try to do "fake" surgery on you if you don't need it. I overheard him telling other patients that they did not need a root canal if they really did not need it. The office also is up-front with you about the cost of the procedure, even before you begin. - CARING. I've never met an endodontist that was GENTLE. My 4 previous root canals were all pretty rough, and the last one I had was so rough that my head came off the back of the chair! Dr Shaik is 360-opposite. He cares, his staff cares. My last endo's office could not get me a timely appointment, even if I was in pain from the previous root canal and were pretty dismissive on the phone. Come to Hawaii Endodontics, and you'll be treated like a valued patient, not another number after they collect your money. - MODERN EQUIPMENT. You're going to laugh and think this is a given, but my previous endodontist did not even take a 3D xray, he only took a regular xray that he held up to the light with his fingers; he didn't even put it on an xray reader to look at it! At the time I felt like the whole thing was like an architect drawing up a plan on an Etch-A-Sketch or a cocktail napkin, and it kind of was, given I had more problems down the road, and I had to pay out of pocket for another procedure! I know Dr. Shaik and his staff squeezed in that unplanned root-canal to save me time. I had to take a vacation day off from work to come here today so I was thrilled when he said he could do it today (and who the heck is thrilled about getting a root canal???). I was very grateful. On another note, after the root canal I had to rush home to meet KKTF Glass for an estimate on a broken window after my neighbor's son threw a baseball that shattered our window and I told the glass guy Stan to go check out Dr. Shaik after he told me his root canal was very painful. I recently went to Hawai'i Endodontics for a root canal that was handled by Dr. Kevin Schlang. Through the whole procedure he was very reassuring and made sure to be aware and ask about how I was doing throughout it. I was the last appointment of the day but the way he approached my root canal I may as well have been his first, he in no way was attempting to rush the procedure, make me feel bad for the amount of time it would take and even allowed me extra moments after it was finished to recover as my TMJ issues were acting up. What has stood out the most besides the lack of pain and the quick recovery is how responsive he is even outside of office hours. Any concern I've had has been answered promptly, even going so far as letting me contact him personally. The entire assisting staff was very respectful, kind and caring. I had a great experience there and it's been very hard to feel comfortable and cared for in environments since I've had to adjust to being Covid cautious after a hard infection in 2023 but I was able to relax and feel calm enough to have my mouth worked on. I understand that people dread going to the dentist. I had an emergency root canal this afternoon, and I have to say it was the BEST experience I've ever had in a dental office. The staff was cheerful and laughing and sometimes singing along with the music that drifted through the rooms. I was seen by Dr. Kevin Schlang, and he was amazing. He was gentle and kind and considerate and (most importantly) efficient and skilled. I was in and out of there with little to no pain. It was amazing. I have not had to take any pain medication. I'm still quite careful about chewing on that side, but the excruciating ache is gone, and he was able to save my tooth. I highly recommend this office and Dr. Schlang. I am so impressed. If you ever need root canal see Dr. Shaikh at Hawaii Endodontics. My first visit was back in 2017 and 2019. He does very good job on root canal and always he explains what he needs to do. He is very caring and very gentle. Plus he is not one of the Dr. Who would just do root canal to make money. He will take X-ray and give you his honest opinion.. I trust him because after he did my root canal that tooth wasn't bother me anymore. When I changed my Dentist they referred me to different Dr. Endodontist. I went to 2 different Endodontist but out of the three I like Dr. Shaikh the best.. He is friendly, gentle and very caring. He understands that you are in pain.. He make sure you feel comfortable.. While they doing root canal they check on me many times. They even told me if I feel any pain raise my left hand. The other Endodontist I went before while they working on your root canal they didn't bother to ask me if I was ok. They was too busy talking story. Plus he has very nice friendly staff too. I had 2 root canals scheduled here with Dr Kevin and was reluctant to go just because I never had it done before and from what I knew about this procedure, would be awful. So , I go in with the anticipation that it would be "Little Shop of Horrors" you know, that movie back in the late 80's with Steve Martin because I was in pain because I had to get a refferal and that took 2 to 3 weeks. So they scheduled 1 to be done 1 week and the next the following week. The first one was like an hour long procedure and was expecting to be in pain the next day. I woke up and the pain from the infection was gone and didn't need any kind of painkillers. Thought it was a fluke. I accidentally missed the 2nd appointment due to me getting sick. Thought I'd get charged the 75.00 no show fee and ended up forgetting about it until the 2nd tooth started hurting bad. So I called expecting not to get another appointment for another month or so. Nope, they took me the next day and waved the 75 dollar. This procedure took 20 mins longer but still had the same dentist and again, woke up the next day without any need of any painkillers. I highly recommend Dr Kevin and the dental assistant Jerry were super good. read more

I will never come back to this Dr office again . Dr Chong was short, rude and rushed, her "colleague" she brought in was an A hole to his staff. My root canal went from 1-1.5 to 3 hr and 20 mins! I told them I had a lot of anxiety and they sucked at keeping the nitrous working or on at all!! It didn't work for 1/2 the time and I asked why I have to pay for $200 worth of nitrous if it wasn't working for half the time!? They kept switching out tanks and messing with the settings. They dont listen to their patients and aren't good for higher anxiety patients. Left in tears. Some people need to learn people skills!! 0 stars if I could!!! read more

I NEVER leave YELP reviews, but felt I must after seeing Dr. Shaikh because of my amazing experience . I had to see him for a root canal. My tooth was extremely sore..to the point where I barely ate food and had trouble sleeping. My appointment was in the afternoon. When I got there, Dr. Shaikh was on-time, which was a pleasant surprise for me because my doctor/dentist appointments are always 15-30min behind schedule. This was my first visit to Hawaii Endodontics and Dr. Shaikh came out to the waiting room to greet me and see how I was doing, which was also pleasantly surprising and shows the empathy of Dr. Shaikh. The assistant then took me into the back to prep me and take x-rays. She was really easy to talk to and friendly. Dr. Shaikh then came into the room to discuss what needed to be done and thoroughly answered all of my questions. After I was comfortable with everything, Dr. Shaikh got to work. He made sure to numb me so everything would be painless. To be honest, I felt soo relaxed that I almost fell asleep a couple times during the root canal. The most surprising part was, the appointment was in the afternoon, and by the evening, after the numbness wore off, there was very minimal pain (less than when I get a filling or a crown)...By the next morning, there was no pain!!! Even when I get a filling, there is some sensitivity for a couple days...but after the root canal from Dr. Shaikh, there was no pain!!! I had a horrible toothache and was told I needed a root canal. I am 7 months pregnant and after consulting with my OBGYN was advised it's best to get it done now. The visit to this doctor's office was an emergency on Saturday of last week. I had a very severe condition and needed an immediate root canal. Not only did the staff take care of me right away they ensured that I got in within the hour. The doctor's assistant was an absolute sweetheart and did everything in her power to ensure that I was comfortable. Dr. Shaikh was by far the best dentist that I've ever been to in my 42 years of life. He was extremely thorough in every single thing he did. Dr. Shaikh, thank you so much from the very bottom of my heart for taking care of me so quickly and taking away the pain that was nearly unbearable. Like most people- I don't like the dentist. When I had some pain on my right jaw I went in to see My dentist. Bummer- needed a root canal but the service at Hawaii Endodontics was great. Scheduling appointments was easy which is pretty important when you are in pain. Some other places couldn't see me for a week or longer! They took the time to explain everything from options to co-pays, and all the way through to the procedures. Dr. Liu performed my root canal which went off as well as root canals can go. My regular dentist referred me here because I needed a root canal on my back left tooth (#18). The procedure was fine, and I think Dr. Gurney did a great job. He was patient and kind and gentle. They give you a choice of movies to watch through a pair of goggles and headphones but they are one size fits all so they were a bit big for me. Still, it was a nice distraction. I've never had a root canal and didn't know what to expect. So everything about the office visit I would give 5 stars, but after the anesthetic wore off I woke up at about 10:30pm because I was in so much pain. (The migraine I had didn't help.) My vision was blurry from the pain. I took a couple ibuprofen as recommended by the doctor and iced it. Finally I went into the ER at 12:30am because I was still in so much pain. The ER visit cost me $100 plus the Vicodin they prescribed me. The root canal itself is an expensive procedure and I am not happy to have this additional charge. You all know how tight finances can be. I'm not sure if I am the unusual patient who experienced more pain than normal but the Dr did say the root was pretty deep. I think if I had a prescription from the office just in case, then the whole trip to the ER would've been unnecessary. They just told me to take ibuprofen so I didn't think it would hurt this bad. On the plus side the ER doc gave me some shot in the arm that knocked out the pain in my mouth and my head in minutes. The downside, now my arm is sore, lol. Update: the office was very apologetic about my experience and they said they are taking steps to get a better functioning emergency line.
