We had never heard of Haven before, but some friends invited us to go. We made reservations for an early Sunday dinner. It was nearly empty when we arrived, but almost full by the time we left!
The ambiance is really great for a little restaurant tucked into a mixed-use development. There was lots of light, clean-lined decor, and rich wood. The dining room was bordered on one side by the open kitchen and wine wall (is there a more official name for those things?) and by the pretty bar on the other. The waitstaff fit in well with the upscale, down-home Southern vibe--all wearing white button downs with jeans. The look of the place was great!
Our waitress was friendly and genuinely complimentary of our selections. We started with the Truffled Potato Hay, and as our waitress said another diner called it, it was "annoyingly addictive." For only $5, it was an enormous stack of crispy potato sticks with truffle oil, garlic, parsley and shaved cheese. (The best bites were those with all of the above! yum) We literally continued eating it until the desserts came out. Great appetizer for the table!
I started with the iceberg wedge, which was very good. The dressing was tangy enough without the bleu cheese being overpowering, the tomatoes were super ripe, and the lettuce was the right balance between soft and crunchy. The bacon was so smokey it nearly burned my mouth, but I still liked it.
I thought some of the entree prices were a little steep, but I had heard the portions were generous. I had the Ashley Farms Chicken n' Dumplings. The chicken skin was really well-seasoned, with the right amount of crispiness, and the chicken itself was also really tasty. The herb dumplings were a tad bit on the dough-y side for my liking, but they still tasted good. Now, my only disappointment with the dish was the amount of cream sauce/broth. I wish it had looked like the example picture someone else posted. Instead, the dumplings, mushrooms, and veggies were completely lost in a huge amount of sauce. I couldn't even see what else was in there, and I didn't really care for fishing through it and pulling out mystery bites. About 1/4 the portion of the broth would have been plenty. Other entrees ordered were the scallops, duck breast, and trout. Everyone seemed to enjoy, although the scallops were by far the smallest portion. The other two were extremely generous.
For dessert, we tried the praline creme brulee. It really should be called "Creme Brulee with a Praline" instead, because I'm pretty sure it was just the regular stuff with a praline tucked into the dish. It was still tasty, but definitely not as exciting as I was expecting.
The wine selections were a little expensive by my standards, but they did have a Sunday special on certain bottles.
I'll give Haven a good solid 4-stars on setting and menu concept. The food gets more like a solid 3, as in good but not the best ever at that price point. If I lived closer, I might go back, but I'll probably stick with JCT for my upscale Southern. So, 3.5 overall!
P.S. Valet is available behind the restaurant, but our directions turned us onto Appalachee, which runs perpendicular to the lot (but with no entrance?). Conveniently enough, it was nearly empty with an abundance of (free) street parking. I'd try there, first. read more
