This is my favorite restaurant in/near Atlanta. Haven's service has always been top notch. The Scottish salmon is my favorite with the pine nut couscous. The biscuits and gravy are to die for. I was in the area on Easter looking for a brunch place and I remember wanting to try haven for dinner but I noticed they were also open for brunch. I thought there would be a wait but there wasn't one for outside. The weather was nice and I likes the outdoor seating. The chairs were a bit uncomfortable but that was my only complaint with sitting outside. They had a pre-fixed Easter menu. It came with yummy beignets to start. I ordered a coffee and my friend got juice. For a place like this I would have though they would have fresh squeezed juice but the server said it was more of from a can which was disappointing. Then we chose 2 starters and 2 main dishes. I had the oysters which were delicious and my friend got the fish special. I didn't even remember the name or take a picture of it bc it was just not good. The only good thing on the fish special was the quail eggs that it came with. The fish was also very cold like Icy cold. so we both just shared the oysters which was yummy. We also got the steak and eggs which were delicious and the eggs Benedict. Eggs Benedict was good but the poached eggs were more like hard boiled eggs. I like my eggs a little runny at least. It is an expensive place for brunch but overall, I think it went well. I would like to come back and try their dinner to see if we have an even better experience. read more

Stopped in around 6:00 on a Friday - a perfect day for outside dinning. Seated on the patio nearly immediately. The food was outstanding - flavorful and creative - and the service was excellent. Not long after my husband I moved to this part of town, we went looking for a great new brunch place. Unfortunately, Haven just didn't do it for us. He got a take on an crab cake eggs benedict and I got the shrimp and grits. Neither were mind blowing - just generic brunch food we could find at many places in Atlanta. The place was packed so obviously it is a popular place - it didn't seem like they had enough staff to properly wait on the amount of people as we waited quite a while for service. Tonight was the 2nd in a row out of about 20 visits that were extremely disappointing. Normally, this restaurant is on my list of go to favorites!!! Unfortunately, our last two dinner experiences have been very unpleasant. As frequent customers who are huge fans (and consider ourselves to be avid food critics) and prior restaurant-owners, I feel an obligation to the owners to provide honest feedback, both positive and negative. Our last two experiences are detailed below. Date: June 29th @ 7:30pm Party of 4 (My Husband's clients and ourselves) Server: cant remember name Issues with service: 1. After being seated, waited 15 mins for server 2. after giving drink orders, waited another several minutes 3 waiter came back to take order and still no drinks! 4. Ordered following apps, which came out very sporadically): mussels (lukewarm) 2 fried oysters smoked trout ***very delicious!* steak tartare (flooded with mustard sauce, like never before!) ***requested bread, but got none, until 2nd request) 5. We took our time ordering, but requested another round of drinks and never got drinks for 15 more minutes 6. Ordered salads and entrees simultaneously: 1 caesar 1 heirloom 1 local vegetable I requested a side of field pea salad that I adore, but never received it, instead he brought me a warm side of field peas in the bowl with my halibut! yuck Entrees (did not come out together, which is very annoying) duck breast (my husband said it was the only thing he's ever eaten at haven that was "just not good" and he was sick to his stomach the following day) halibut (not cooked all the way through (NOT OK with Halibut) and fish had texture of frozen fish after sending it back to be cooked more scallops salmon - always delicious 7. We asked for wine recommendations and we werent comfortable with his level of knowledge, especially when he said "hmmm, let me go make sure with the bartender!" It's not the time and place to constantly complain about anything when entertaining clients, so we made the decision to just chalk it up to a busy / off night and let it go. For the $325 bill, we could have had a After our experience on this past Tuesday night, however, I have no reservations about letting the management know, because this one was absolutely unacceptable. Two times in a row, our experiences have been so poor at one of our fave restos, that my husband told me "we're not going back for a while!" Date: Tuesday, July 19th @ 6:30pm David, our server, was quite possibly one of the most unfriendly, unaccomodating and unpleasant person / server we've ever had in a long long time. He seemed so bothered and unhappy to be working and barely answered our questions with more than two words. (Unfortunately, Thomas was not there and noone can hold a candle to him!!!) We had to constantly keep asking him for everything, what the specials were, etc etc and looked at us like we were crazy or speaking a different language that he understood. I do not eat pork and I know from eating at Haven that some things cannot be altered to exclude the pork (i.e. trout or some hot vegetables). However, my favorite appetizer is mussels and they always make it for me without the pork. When I asked him for no pork, he said "no, they cannot be made that way." I said would you mind double checking and he repeated no, they cannot (without even asking the chef). I said nothing further and didn't get my mussels. We asked him the specials and he responded "just the hamburger, like I said before ma'am." He neglected to tell us about the glass of wine that came with, so we lost out on that too! (uggghhh! not cool) There were 8 people in our party, including my 2 children, who ordered off of the adult menu. Our bill totaled over $500, which, needless to say, was not worth it. The food was not much better than the terribly miserable service. Food: Apps- Salads - amazing beef tartare - ok, no capers and over sauced w/ mustard sauce bread - flatbread stale Mains: 3 ordered C.A.B. filet - all were overcooked - not as good as usual - ordered filet for the children PLAIN with no sauce, it came with sauce, potatoes, etc and overcooked hamburger -overcooked -french fries burnt Scallops -almost raw! Try the mushroom tart appetizer. Delicious. The mushrooms were fresh, tasty and it came with a litlte bit of lettuce on the side. The fried oysters with remoulade over grits were excellent as well. We had the Steele Merlot - which was ok. $40 for a bottle. It gave me a headache afterwards - which means that it was a so-so bottle of wine. Not a very smooth wine. We had the scallops over mac and cheese with fried country ham. Ham was terrific, scallops cooked well. Mac and cheese was average. Chicken and dumplings entree was not bad. Not sure I would have this entree again. I should have ordered the lamb - the table next to us had it and it looked beautiful. Nice staff. Very, very pricey. Since Mother's Day, Haven has started doing brunch, and they do it very well! The breads are baked on the premises, and today's choices included cheese danish (our server baked them, and put two samples with the Sticky Bun we ordered--YUM!), apple scones and one other choice. We were sorely tempted by the beignets, but had to pass this time. There are lots of Southern spins on things, like the Big Biscuit with homemade sausage and the Cheddar Grits. I had a roasted tomato, asparagus and feta omelet. The ingredients were fresh, and the portion was perfect, not overwhelming. Prices were fair. We sat outside on the patio, and employees were loudly clearing tables as we ate...quickly. Salad was okay to start. Mussels were good. Carrot cake was not very good. Great outdoor patio, nice menu and great service. Unfortunately lazy chef let things down. The mrs had crab cakes which she said was great. I ordered the steak and eggs with hollandaise, steak was great, hollandaise, creamy, good citrus balance, eggs were terrible, dry, cold and dense. the waiter admitted their scrambled eggs were not very good. So chef of Haven, go google light fluffy scrambled eggs, or call Paul's Dean for some butter tips. You have a great venue, great service and most of your food and ingredients are good, but you can't make scrambled eggs, that just embarrassing. The patio is the perfect place to be with a glass of wine and yellow tomato gazpacho! I've never been anything other than head over heels with what I've ordered here. The ambiance is perfect except for indoors can be loud- make sure you eat outside and get a reservation! Ok food and ok establishment. All in all, an ok place. Why just ok? Food - I feel like I am stuck in the 90's on the food. Stacked food. Lots of sauces. Lots of garnish. Its pretty solid food but I've had it all before at the thousands of other "havens" across the country. Vibe - definitely a local resaurant vibe. Lots of folks in their 40's and 50's. Seems friendly and fairly relaxed. But, nothing special. Bottom line - the food is good, the vibe is good but I ain't going out of my way to eat there. Oh my goot-ness, this place is so fantastic. I love Valenza and friends were telling me that Haven is better (I'm still undecided, but they are both money well spent). Go on a Sunday night for half price wine. The beef tartare is great, the grilled romaine salad is unique and fun, scallops- check. The only thing that I didn't like about the entire bill was the check- over $300 for 3 people, of course the half price wine is not so cheap when you get lots of bottles. A lovely restaurant in the heart of Brookhaven, Haven is a wonderful place to go for a leisurely Sunday brunch and for a special occasion dinner. I've been to Haven for a few dinners (all great), and my family and I were recently there for a Sunday brunch to celebrate my Dad's birthday. We had a sizable group including small children, and our experience truly could not have been more enjoyable. The staff was welcoming and warm; Karen was so nice and took care of our group like her family, serving even the littlest guests wonderfully. Food was delicious: greatest hits included the Scottish salmon, eggs Benedict, and frittata. Ambiance is inviting and cool; there is interesting artwork on the walls, both indoor seating and outdoor seating in a beautiful garden, and a lively atmosphere. Reservations were easy to make, and confirmed by the staff. Parking is easy-peasy, in a private lot just behind the restaurant. In all, the fam raved about the food and service, and we'll be back. Without a doubt one of the most comfortable, customer friendly establishments in the Metro Atlanta area. Their new restaurant, Valenza is in the same building and offers a different yet just as inviting dining experience. Michael and his lovely wife have put together a team that is without a doubt one of the best in the city. I am very picky when it comes to customer service and top to bottom the people that work for Michael are a reflection of him. The food is exceptional and the wine list is perfect. This is a lovely little place. I loved the decor also the little outside patio. The food impressed me as i had the french toast and let me just say this was the best i've ever had to date. For me the Brookhaven area is like the friend you see about once every two months and at the end of the night, having a great time you vow to see more of each other, but then another two months goes by before you do. I don't visit often, but often have a great time, Haven is no exception to this rule. We started with two small plates, the Oxtail Caramelle : Chanterelles, Squash Purée, Pumpkin Seeds & the Beef Tartare: Country Mustard, Pumpernickel Rye, Capers, Quail Egg. I was watching Top Chef Seattle last week and one of the chefs made a small plate with Oxtail and described it as a wonderful & sweet part of the cow. He was right and the pumpkin seeds were the perfect seasonal touch, like pumpkin in just about anything this time of year. I was even more excited about the Tartare, as I not only was able to identify all the ingredients, but they sounded wonderful, especially the quail egg, which was pared with the Tartare I had at The Spence the week prior. As much as the Oxtail was a hit for me, the Tartare was a miss. To me tartare should have a rich texture, the mouth feel is one of the best aspects of it and the taste should be a little luxury and it just wasn't. Not awful, I wouldn't have returned it, but I would not order it again. I am still glad I tried it though. We spilt the Dillwood Farms Butter Lettuce Salad: Oven Dried Tomatoes, Candied Bacon, Crispy Red Onions, Creamy Blue Cheese. I am normally not a fan of blue cheese, but everything, including the creamy blue cheese dressing was amazing. I will never go to this restaurant and not order this salad to share, I loved it (and they split it with out us even asking, we simply said we would be sharing everything and they did it themselves, a wonderful touch). We then moved onto the entrees: Florida Black Grouper: Carolina Gold Rice Risotto, Broccoli, Chanterelles, Ginger. My first bite was extremely salty and was worried, but the rest of the dish was great. Nice slight crunchy texture, moist fish without a hint of being overcooked, no salt avalanche after the first bite. Second up was the Homemade Ricotta Tortellini: Chanterelles, Sweet Potatoes, Sage, Pinenuts and was the better of the two dishes, but it was close. Sharing the entrees was great, I am big fan of it, especially at a restaurant where I have not made much of the menu. To Recap: The Good: I really did enjoy the service, it is a great date place (if you are like me and still forced to do such things). The small plates all looked wonderful, the salad was fantastic and entrees savory. The Bad: Not an inexpensive night out and the table where we were seated was a little too close to the bar. The partition isn't quite high enough and when you are dropping over $100 at a meal, seeing random people looking over the wall at your dish doesn't exactly scream ambiance. It was limited to the tables that area though, so I would just request a different section next time, not a deal breaker at all. Haven has a lot of pluses--great ambiance, superb service, consistent quality, and great flavors. The salads were tasty, served with savory dressings. The bread was fresh. The service was attentive, professional, friendly, and, importantly, accurate. The entrees are good, but seem to be tailored to non-poultry eaters. Several seafood options, lots of red meat, and some pork. Unfortunately, no turkey and one purely chicken option, though that was in-bone. To appeal to a broader audience, I would recommend having a standard chicken breast option. That said, the sides accompanying each meal at the table were delicious. The potatoes accompanying the chicken were unbelievably smooth and the tomatoes were flavorful. (The chicken was cooked perfectly--to be fair.). For dessert, apple streusel doughnuts, that I paired with caramel ice cream. If you like red meat and seafood, this is certainly the place for you.
