I brought shoes in to get tougher soles on them. They were super comfortable shoes but I just needed more cushion. He charged $80, it took a couple of weeks. He said it would last a year. 4 months later the glue has completely come off of one of the soles. I took them back to ask him to fix them. He said it would cost $80 more and that was a bargain, it's usually a hundred he said. I said it only lasted 4 months and you said it would last a year. I took them somewhere else. The charge to fix them is going to be the same with better glue and better soles and will be fixed in a day or two. read more

I had a pair of Raf Simmons resoled. They lasted about 6 months until BOTH soles fully came off. Cutting job was horrible too. STAY AWAY.

I also paid an extra $30 so he would remove the smell radiating from the shoes. Again, he insisted he could but he could not. Maybe he didn't even try. Who knows? The shoes barely look passable. Got some extra black leather dye on the soles of the shoes. I'd say the work looks to be worth ~$60 and that's me giving him the benefit of the doubt. Definitely not the $100 I paid. What I like about Harry is that he's good at his job, but more importantly he's honest about how much he can do. He never overpromises to extend the life of a shoe that needs to go to the great shoe rack in the sky. I've had shoe and leather repair people get overambitious, and I end up with a broken purse or shoe a month later. I feel like I can look him in the eye and say, "Give it to me straight, doc"--and he does. He doesn't upsell you, and he'll tell you if your item is beyond repair. A good man who does good work. I have never been to upset. They destroyed my shoes. I took my worn once, for my wedding MAZLAN BARRIO shoes here to cleaned. They only needed to be cleaned because they were new. I had dropped cake frosting on them and I did not want to take a brush to them because they were so nice. I paid $30 and when I got my shoes back they were ripped in 4 places. I seems as though they took a wire brush and just went ham. The Shine is gone some of the small details are missing. Before i got to my car I opened my bag because i was so eager to see my fresh shoes and then Bamm. My $230 shoes are ruined. I went back to the place and showed my shoes to ask if they could do anything about it, and they said, you can put some glue on it. Wtf!!! You ripped them, now fix them. The guy there just looked at them, look back at me and said they "I didn't do it" I have never received a worst service in my life. read more

I have a pair of John Varvatos slip ons that I got years ago. They're canvas and leather and the stitching came out on the toe. I stupidly tried to fix it myself with glue and failed miserably. I found Harry's Shoe Repair with a google search, and it's near my workplace so I dropped by (super cute tiny shop tucked away on University Ave). Harry took a look, said he could re-stitch the shoe and replace the insoles (which were really worn) and that he could also repair a torn belt I brought in (on the off chance he'd be able to fix it). All of that came to $42 and took 2 days to turn-around. I'm ecstatic to get more life out of my favorite slip-ons and have my belt back in working order. Had I bought both new again, it would have been over $200 and the insoles are even comfier than the originals! read more

I recently took my large REI rolling duffel to Narains for repair. The bag was generally in great shape, but two bottom corners were fraying and threatening the integrity of an otherwise great suitcase. Narains turned down the job since they couldn't get it in their heavy duty machines, but suggested Harry's. Harry said it would be all handwork and charged what sounded like a lot to me ($80). But a) REI no longer makes this bag and b) an equivalent size and quality bag from LL Bean or somewhere quality like that would be twice as expensive, and c) I would rather invest money in keeping good older items in service than throw them "away" and bring new plastic stuff into this beleaguered world and d) I like to support local businesses that try to keep our things in repair. So I told him to go ahead. I am happy with the outcome. The repair and reinforcement looks very solid. I'll update if the stitching fails prematurely, but assume no news is good news! read more

This whole 'taking care of my shoes' thing is new to me. But when I recently purchased a pair of nice Cole Haan loafers and thought to myself "I hope these last forever", I wondered if there was a way to actually make that happen. Apparently putting rubber soles on your shoes will extend the life about 3 years. At Harry's, rubber soles cost $29. Seemed a little steep to a novice like me, but my friends tell me that's the going rate. Harry did an awesome job putting Vibram soles on my Cole Haan's, with a 2-day turnaround time. I'm sure he could work faster if you were in a bind. The next week I returned with some Via Spiga heels I found at a consignment shop and had him re-sole them for $28. I guess Harry's my go-to shoe guy now! Other Yelpers say he's not very personable, but I think he's pretty sweet. His tiny little shop has just about everything you could ever want for your shoes: polish, heel protectors, insoles, etc. He cuts to the chase and gets the job done. In, out, and back on your new & improved feet. My fiance had him sew leather lining into the heels of his Vans, so they would stop rubbing against his heels. He did an amazing job, and I'm now considering doing the same for my torn up Keds. Are they worthy of such an upgrade? We'll see... He takes Visa & MC, and asked that you pay 50% of the total when you drop off, and the other 50% when you pick up. Fair enough! read more

Great cobbler! I lived in Berkeley for 7 years and Harry's was my go to shop for getting shoes re-soled, leather/suede boots cleaned, and shoes and handbags water-proofed. Never once did I have a bad experience, and the prices were phenomenal. Very reasonable and I was on a grad student budget! Also, Harry was honest and upfront- when it was cheaper to just do something myself, he'd tell me, which speaks volumes. I brought my favorite boots in Harry's to get them repaired since part of one of my heel broke off,but i no longer had the piece...I'd asked him if he could fix it and make it back to it's orginal height to match the other side of my boot. He said "dont worry, i'll make it even. i'll charge you $12". SoOo $12 is a good deal so i left it there for 2 days. On Friday i went in to pick up my boots and it's not what i'd expected.... What he did to my boots was that he cut of the other heel that was perfect to match the other heel that was broken to make them even and just added new sole to them....My poor boots !! I wanted him to make fix it back to it's orginal state,but instead he makes them shorter !!! I loved those boots too and now it's no more.... read more

This guy "Harry" is a trip. I had my favorite pair of Via Spiga boots re-soled ( with vibram sole material ) and polished for $20, he did a great job. i always find street parking outside the shop. ever since then i have brought in other shoes that I thought needed polishing or repair, and he would say "do it yourself", or it'll cost more for the labor to repair than to go "buy a new pair" of old navy flip flops. Don't ask me why, but I think that's funny to send away a paying customer and tell them to shine their own shoes... like an episode of Seinfeld - i keep returning with other shoes to see what repairs he actually WILL do for me. read more

Nothing Complicated, PLEASE. This place is very good if you need to change the hill of a shoe or glue something back together, then the job is either good or okay, but don't request anything complicated. I repaired a lot of shoes at this place, but one time I wanted to repair my shoe snaps, and it was a mistake. He only had white thread, so it really stood out on a beige shoe, and the "repair" was very visible. It felt like a home repair, not a professional job. So, the job is okay unless it's a complicated and/or unusual repair request. read more

Wanted to try out a new cobbler, so I decided to shop around. Dropped off two pairs of shoes - one for a re-gluing of the seem ($15) and another for new soles ($35). The prices were comparable to 2 other shops, so I decided to give them a try. OH LORD, it was pretty terrible - at least in comparison to my other cobbler (in Oakland off 14th). The sole was uneven, glue EVERYWHERE on BOTH shoes (I had to file/sand it off myself), huge gaps in where the leather of the shoe hit the sole, sole wasn't rounded out or filed down - totally square cut, and (with "quality" workmanship like that - you guessed it!) they didn't even wipe down the shoe, let alone shine it. It was ridiculously dusty outside and INSIDE of the shoe even though it was only there for 2 days, and like I said above - there was glue everywhere. When I picked up the shoes, I just looked at the guy. He said, "It looks good, no?" I prepaid, which could have been the kicker here, but come on, man! I would suggest going to the cobbler in Oakland, I will never leave them again - reverse everything I said above, and that is the quality you get there - and they quoted me the same price as this guy. I'm SOOO bummed, I had to just toss the shoes because it wasn't worth spending the money to have it redone again. BOOOO!!!!! read more

Decided to bring in a pair of Ralph Lauren sneakers with a sole that was coming detached from the fabric. It's nearby and I have other boots that need some work so I thought I would try it out with a simple job. Within seconds of showing him the shoe, he said he wouldn't even try because it would just break again. It's a simple, cheap fix, and it's clear how the shoes are constructed, he just didn't want to do the work. That's his prerogative, of course, but safe to say I won't bother bringing anything back here in the future with that kind of attitude. It's one thing if a shoe is totally wrecked beyond repair, but it's different when someone who owns a shoe repair shop takes one look at a loose sole that needs to be resealed with a little fabric and glue and says "can't do it" within 15 seconds and wants you out the door immediately then goes back to work without so much as a goodbye. Just got a few shoes fixed up here. One pair needed a resoling because of multiple holes in both soles, and another shoe needed a small patch on the strap where some holes had torn through. Harry was not particularly friendly but he also wasn't rude. I was in and out of the shop quickly on both dropoff and pickup. The work was surprisingly pricey, given the other reviews. The resoling was $58 and the fixed strap was $10. I don't think these prices are out of line with other places but they're also not exactly cheap. (NB: I am definitely not an expert on shoe repair pricing.) I got them back yesterday and both jobs looked very nice. I'll update if there are durability problems. read more

I have a hard time understanding his English as he explains what he's going to do to my shoes & boots, but at the end he'll say "ten" (as in dollars), and I say okay. I've been to dozens of shoe repair places in the East Bay and San Francisco - even the fancy ones. But no one does the quality of work like Harry.
