On my first day in Minneapolis, I decided to walk over to Harry Singh's. I was a little concerned by the boarded up glass door but decided to forge ahead and I'm glad I did. Harry is a friendly elderly man from Trinidad and Tobago. He is apparently very well known in Minnesota, particularly for his curries which I will be sure to try the next time I'm in state. Personally, I'm never able to resist jerk chicken and so upon sitting down, I promptly placed my order for jerk chicken and plantains. Unfortunately he was out of Caribbean punch but he made me a mixture of sorrel and ginger beer that was pretty good although a bit sweet for me. When my jerk chicken arrived at my table, I was in awe of the sheer amount of food I had unknowingly ordered (and very glad I hadn't ended up ordering the curry as well as one person) and of the smell. It was so hot it was smoking and I could immediately smell the flavors were legit and the chicken would be spicy. This jerk chicken was spicy in a way that sneaks up on you. I was surprised to feel my eyes watering! One of the other patrons was coughing from the spice of his meal so if you're not used to spicy food, definitely order a glass of milk in advance! The plantains were perfectly ripe, sweet and well cooked, just like I would make for myself! Harry was very kind and sweet and kept coming up to my table as well as his tables of regulars to chat and exchange stories. I'm not always the most chatty but I didn't feel uncomfortable speaking with Harry. The food is DELICIOUS! We visited this restaurant when traveling to Minnesota from Chicago. There was ample seating at the establishment. My daughters even had some room to stretch their legs before we headed back home to Chicago. We ordered the jerk pork roti and the curry goat roti. Both were so flavorful and just the right level of spicy. Harry Singh runs the shop. He is the most pleasant and delightful man. We talked with him for a long time. Harry makes his own bottled hot sauce, and we bought two bottles to bring home to Chicago with us. We can't wait to go back someday! They opened at 12 pm on Saturday. Harry's is authentic Caribbean food and probably the hottest in the cities. It is still run by Harry Singh, who is there every day, and will take your order, cook the food and bring your bill. Super guy who is still going strong after all these years. We ordered some roti - jerk chicken and curry chicken. Also, an order of chicken curry over rice and slaw. Great flavors and the portions are huge. To drink, you get a large pitcher of water. You will need the water to quench the heat from the food which has serious spice. We ordered some Ting, a traditional Caribbean soda which grapefruit based. It went well the food and I recommend it. You can order your dish with four different heat levels - mild, average, hot or hot-hot. Order it mild and then add hot sauce from the jar on the table. Even the mild has some serious heat so be careful what you do. There is even a warning on the menu! I hadn't eaten here in years. I suggested this place to a buddy of mine who likes hot food and he was willing to give it a try. As we approached this smallish establishment we saw Harry himself standing outside looking a bit pensive. He may have been a bit discouraged by the lack of business. As we entered, we were the only customers at ~6:00P on a weeknight. Harry was as personable as I remembered. Stopping by to chat several times and generally playing the gracious host. We started with some Jamaican Patties that were flavorful but seemed a bit soggy as though they'd been heated in the microwave. I chose the Jerk Chicken Roti. Even without the addition of Singh's Sunshine Signature Hot Sauce ("It's Hot!") it was well beyond the usual MN level of spiciness. After I augmented the dish with several generous dollops of sauce, it was transformed into a fiery, flavorful inferno of blissfully painful goodness. My friend actually found his shrimp dish a bit too hot for his liking and threw in the towel about 2/3 of the way through. As we ate, a few fellow diners drifted in and several others stopped in to pick up takeout orders. Still business looked discouragingly thin. I know there is no shortage of very worthy local establishments that need and deserve support. They add immeasurably to the culture and texture of our community. I would say that Singh's qualifies. If you haven't been here for a while, consider a return sooner than later. If you've never tried it, give it a shot. read more

When a large demographic of people treat salt and ketchup as cayenne and hot sauce, you should be wary of what anyone recommends you for food. Enter Harry Singh. Sometimes I wonder if Harry Singh is real or not. The eccentric and mysterious elder of heat has been at it for decades now. Purveyor of flavor and humor, he has saved me as a transplant minnesotan but destroyed my ambitious gut and sphincter many times with his creations. When I have guests in town, I am quick to tell them that Harry's Jerk Chicken Roti is my favorite dish in this gotforsaken state. I do not hide that the experience is like that of watching Hereditary or riding a roller coaster. It is fun, it is a thrill, but you will suffer in one way or another. It comes with the turf, and you know what you are signing up for in the heat arena. if you can't handle spice or don't like it, go get Quang or Glam Doll up the street, places that cater to the aforementioned Minnesotan above. I wish I could bring Harry Singh's back with me after this trip to MPLS! Byfar my favorite meal during my time in the Twin Cities. Harry was so welcoming and made me feel at home immediately. The beef Jamaican patty was full of flavor and just the right level of spicy, the chicken curry roti was SO DELICIOUS and had a nice balance of vegetables to get me through the heat, and the few bites of jerk pork roti I snuck from my SO's plate were so good. Portions were generous (I'm actually eating the leftovers as I write this review). The dishes here pack some heat, so if you can't handle spicy at all, you're gonna have a bad time. But I dig spicy, and you can detect the heat in the food here - but it does not overpower the flavor of the food. This was a one-man shop the afternoon I visited; Harry personally greeted every guest, took their orders, prepared their food, made sure they had enough water, and closed their checks. I admire his work ethic and how he was so warm and welcoming throughout, even though that is so much work for one person! This food was PHENOMENAL!! One of the greatest spots to eat on Eat Street. We got take out for our NYE dinner: the jerk chicken, vegetarian curry, roti, a bottle of Harry's signature hot sauce, the Jamaican ginger beer and the Ting sparkling grape fruit. This place was SO GOOD. Harry himself was so kind and such an excellent chef. We will be ordering from here again and we can't wait till the world opens up so we can eat inside the restaurant! Harry brings the heat to Eat Street! Harry Singh's is a modest eatery (lunch & dinner) that's full of color and character. And hot sauce that hurts so good. 1) Harry is a sweet, friendly, kinda quirky guy and I couldn't stop smiling whenever we spoke to him. He kept bopping me over the head with the menu and I loved it. 2) We ordered "mild" with his signature hot sauce on the side, which I recommend because you can control your own heat, which builds on the tongue like whoa. 3) The portions are huge! 4) The service wasn't super quick, our meal took over 90mins, so maybe call ahead if you're in a rush. Ashley and I ordered: Caribbean wings, curry potato & chickpea roti, and jerk chicken house specialty. I loved the wings - hot and crispy, with a delicious sauce. I kept spooning more sauce on my wings and it was even better with a little extra hot sauce. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I've never had roti before, but I really enjoyed Harry's. It was pure comfort food: thick, soft, and chewy flatbread with hearty curried filling. The jerk chicken was infused with bold flavor, and it came on a heaping plate of rice, beans, and slaw, all smothered in that yummy Caribbean sauce. A few not-so-ideal things, we showed up at open 11am and had to wait ~15mins for it to open. Holy Moly! This food is as spicy as they come! But oh baby, it is all so good! And I love how Harry Singh, the namesake, interacts with all his customers and keeps the authenticity of the Caribbean recipes and flavors. When I first arrived I had to inquire about the rumors. Harry informed me that he was NOT married to Marla. The owner of the other Caribbean restaurant in South Minneapolis. None the less, the menus are very similar but I find that Harry's is slightly cheaper and the portions are slightly bigger. I am not complaining but I can easily eat off of one his portions for 3 days. Now back to the spice, everything appears to come loaded with spice, even the oxtails. I wasn't prepared for spicy oxtails so this took me off guard but the spice is still flavorful and not overbearing. I also tried the jerk chicken with red beans and rice, plantains, and beef patties. Yummy! Yummy! If you are not a fan of spice, please tell Harry immediately. The restaurant is rather small and can probably seat 25 people. Parking is along Eat Street/ Nicollet. read more

This place is flippin' amazing. I am a big fan of spicy food - But only the type that I can still taste the flavors and not just have so much pain that I can't taste anything. This restaurant has what might be the best hot sauce I've ever tried. It's balance of zestiness and spicyness is amazing and I could not get enough! I ordered the jerk chicken roti (so so so so good) and after trying a few bites of the hot sauce I doused the entire thing in hot sauce and simultaneously cried and smiled the entire time. My head was sweating halfway through the meal but at that point I was lost in the sauce I ate the whole thing. My boyfriend tried to impress me and put way too much sauce on his last bite of food and it was so spicy he had to sit down for a while from being woozy from the spice lolol. UPDATE: Harry Singh's is my go-to place when I'm in the mood for something other than Evergreen/Jasmine 26/French Meadow/etc. The vegetarian items here are pretty much all vegan and consist of simple, home-cooked Indo-Caribbean specialties such as roti-dhalpourie (curried vegetables and/or potato and chickpeas stuffed inside a fried wheat roti) and pigeon peas with rice. The prices are reasonable given the portion sizes (two dishes are $8.50, and a few others such as the rotis are around $11). The food here has a lot of black pepper and Caribbean spices, but if you want to make the food "hot" you should add a little bit of Harry's signature sauce which is on each table. It's possibly the spiciest stuff I've ever tasted, easily surpassing anything I've eaten in Mexico, Thailand or India; even a drop is scalding on your tongue and mouth, so be extra careful, or you'll end up hurting yourself and completely ruining your dish. I only wish Harry Singh's had a few more vegetarian options, with an emphasis on different ingredients (potatoes and chickpeas get boring quickly) such as bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots and squash. Marla's Caribbean Cuisine (owned by Harry's sister) has similar food and also gives you the option of tofu in some dishes, which is really nice, and adds some variety to the flavors and textures you encounter in each dish. Ok, I like the food. It's good, but it's hella hot. By hot, I mean burn-the-back-of-your-throat sizzlin'. I ordered the Carribean jerk chicken roti. It was my first roti and wasn't sure what to expect. I've had jerk chicken before in Jamaica and it wasn't nearly as hot as what I suffered through last Sunday with my roti. I could only eat a few bites of this roti. It's thinner than naan and it's more like a corn tortilla but with pita tendencies... (it's good, but it gets soggy from the insides). The inside was filled with jerk chicken drenched in spicy sauce and random vegetables--looked like cauliflower and carrots). The spice was just a little overwhelming and a little hard to kick. Half of the table ordered this and it was a mutual agreement that it was too spicy. Some friends had the curried rice and that looked manageable. They said the spice wasn't nearly that bad. Smart people. We also shared some appetizers which were ok... but don't dip anything in the "hot sauce" on the table. It really is hot as hell. No joke. I can imagine this sauce in chili but hiding but not as a dipping sauce...ever. It's quite a small restaurant, so don't expect an overly sexy dining restaurant. It is a hidden gem on Eat Street. After mistakenly making dinner plans for a Monday (it's closed then--they need to update their website), we finally made it to Harry Singh's. I saw the restaurant on local TV and wanted to check out the Caribbean chow mein. It was a delightful experience. I was reminded of those old-time diners where half of the fun of going is to interact with the owner and take the quirky atmosphere in. Not many places like that anymore. The food was hearty, flavorful, and tasted like home, even though I've never been to Trinidad and Tobago. The meat was tender with a warm, mild spice, and the fresh vegetables offered a nice counterpart. I was relieved to see that there were no crunchy canned noodles. It was like a fried rice, except the vegetables were a fresh garnish and it wasn't dry. I loved the homemade ginger beer. It had a soothing flavor, and just the right amount of sweetness. I also tried my friends' callaloo and vegetable roti. The callaloo was great, and the roti packed a powerful punch. It's unusual for me to envision myself returning multiple times to try all of the different dishes and drinks while I'm still in the restaurant, but Harry's had that effect on me. Mr. Singh is very charming, and as others wrote he came out personally to seat us. He's soft-spoken, so it was a bit hard to hear him over the bright Caribbean music. I asked him about his days at UST ('77), and he has fond memories of his days in the social work program. He gave us some menus to take home. A buddy of mine and I took the 18 bus down Nicollet (Good times, the most horrible people in Minneapolis ride this bus) down to 26th and it was frickin' freezing.(0 degrees F) Harry let us in a little early, which was nice of him. The menu was extensive, but we knew what we wanted, the specialty, roti "Sandwiches". He plopped down a bottle of the special hot sauce, (This is possibly the hottest sauce on the planet, but I loved it) I asked to buy a bottle and he wanted $12 for it? I would pay $6 for a smaller bottle, but, no go. We split a curry chicken roti and a jerk chicken roti and they were amazing! Tons of food, spices like you would never believe, the heat was perfect, Even without the hot sauce, but the hot sauce was added and my buddy laughed because it made me sweat. The protein was super juicy and the roti was like a loaf of heaven bread. Perfect. The decor was awesome, with a mural of downtown Minneapolis painted on the walls, and tons of magazine reviews adorning the walls. For $15 bucks, it was a little steep, but the food was unique and something you have to try once in your lifetime. read more

I normally don't comment on price, but I am unable to eat Harry Singh's without being completely preoccupied with its cost. Last night I got the Curry Beef w Rice, $14, and I chose it because it is one of the cheaper entrees. It was a gigantic amount of plain, white rice, with what seemed like just a bit of curry beef on top. Maybe the work that Harry has to put into his food takes so much time and effort that he must charge this much to cover his labor. The flavors are nice, but the beef was quite tough, should've gotten the chicken. My wife got the shrimp version and hardly ate any, she found it "gritty." I like that representation, it is a bit earthy isn't it? For better or worse, the cabbagey, brownish, carrot-ish, spicy mix has a some friction to it, like really tasty dirt. But if like me you don't like broccoli, cabbage and the other crunchy stuff, you can substitute this vegetable medley with potatoes. Apparently Harry used to have 4 restaurants, but by the time I tried him he only had the one smack in the center of Uptown in what is now the Amazing Thailand spot. But the restaurant wasn't making it there, and it moved to a smaller, cheaper spot on Nicollet. But I've heard it's been struggling there also. I feel bad for Harry because every time I go by it's empty; to tell you the truth I have no idea how it stays afloat. read more

I just have to be honest and say I've been bamboozled by all the 5 star yelp reviews for this place. Yeah, the owner is super nice but if I was rating every place by how nice management was then we'd all have to dive into a haystack looking for a needle of a gem. We got the chicken wings everyone raved about: tasted like instant ramen noodle seasoning packets tossed on top of the chicken wings. Got the Jamaican pattie and it tasted like a defrosted, soggy, hot pocket. Got the Jamaican jerk: you can tell the roti had been previously frozen and just microwaved. As a Trinidadian I love that I can get Trini food in the Midwest. Harry Singh's food is really something else and I've been getting buss up shot skins from him for years. I hope that my experience there last night was an anomaly rather than a sign of terminal decline. Harry Singh's is a Twin Cities institution and I've enjoyed his food on many occasions since I moved here about 10 years ago. If you frequent Harry's, you've probably come to expect fresh, made to order Caribbean dishes packing some serious heat (and if you have a strong constitution you can add a few dashes of the excellent homemade hot sauce). The level of authenticity is not something I can comment on, but the food has always been flavorful. Craving jerk chicken, I found myself at Harry's for the first time in over a year last night. I quickly ordered the Jerk chicken roti, while my partner opted for curried goat. While her order was correct, I was served curried chicken, not jerk. When I pointed out the mistake, the server insisted that I was in fact eating jerk chicken. WTF. Quite simply, these are not two dishes that are easily confused. In addition, my partner noted that the curry sauce didn't taste particularly fresh, a sentiment with which I agreed. If you've eaten at Harry's, you know to expect to wait for your food; it's simply a small concession one makes in return for quality. Last night our order arrived in record time, which would've been great had the food been up to standard; it just wasn't. A friend and I sat down in one of the booths and out from the kitchen comes Harry Singh to drop the menus off at our table. We decided to get the chicken wings, fried plantains, and jerk chicken roti. Wow were we impressed with the food! Jerk Chicken Roti - This dish is awesome!! I can tell you from growing up with Indian food my whole life that this definitely has authentic Indian flavors (not so sure about Caribbean but it's a bit more savory and sweet than traditional Indian). It has the hearty meat and bread feel us Minnesotans love with spicy and savory flavors from his Indian-Caribbean background. Like authentic Indian though, it definitely is spicy so watch out for that! Fried Plantains - Lightly fried to make the plantains nice and soft. Very good. Chicken Wings - Whole wings in Harry's Caribbean hot sauce. Texture of the chicken was perfect - crispy skin with warm meaty inside. The sauce is delicious. Harry is a nice guy. His service is great and he acts as though he appreciates your business. The only thing is the food leaves a lot to be desired. For someone who does not know Caribbean food, the food sold at this place may seem great. However, if you are no stranger to the cuisine, you will probably not like the food very much. I ordered the Curry Goat as a measuring stick to judge the quality of food and it is also a personal favorite of mine since childhood. Curry Goat is supposed to be cooked in a pressure cooker for tenderness, the meat was not tender at all. In fact, it was cut into very small pieces and the meat was still very far from tender. The rice was a little bland. Even with the food needing a little work, Harry's service makes up for the shortcomings. There is a large selection on the menu so I probably just made a bad choice.
