    Lucky loves the park

My dog and I love Harry Griffen Park. There are several gated dog park enclosures which are great for dogs of different sizes or for dogs who enjoy being with a lot of dogs or just a few dogs. Always a bit cooler at the park, love that.

Had an event that we attended for my daughters online school. They had a fitness testing held here which we worried about since 90% of San Diego down poured all morning till about 11am. But after the rain there wasn't many water puddles, there is alot of open land for kids to run around. Tables with covered roofing and a few benches around the play ground. They have a restroom On site and an area where there are posts from people hosting upcoming events. If you drive towards the other side of the park there is a dog park with two different sides for different sizes of your fur babies. Highly recommend this park!

This is not really my type of a dog park. Like the others have said it's a 3 dirt areas for the doggies to run in with wire fences. We took our doggie here when we were touring the area for a good place to take him to run....and it didn't really work out very well for us. He ended up smelling like poop when he got home....it was so gross. I like a bigger area for me doggie to run in and grass....he likes grass.

This place is every dogs dream. Huge, green, peaceful & relaxing. Wish I lived closer.

I personally think La Mesa lacks good parks overall, there's so many more better options in San Diego. But Harry Griffen Park is definitely one of the better ones in the eastern La Mesa area. It's a bit hidden from the road, but you can find it behind the Grossmont High School fields close to Severin Drive. The park kinda has three different types of areas here. The dog run area is one feature people may like about this place, however it's very busy on the weekends and can get crowded with lots of people. Then you have the open grass field area with picnic tables and open space for big parties. Then they have some kind of weird trail system that leads you from the grass area that ends up near Poppy street. My dog doesn't do well in dog parks so I don't take her in that area, but I do enjoy walking around the trail area. It's a very small loop trail that is relatively flat with a few small inclines. Like I said before, there's plenty of better parks close by, but if you have a dog who enjoys dog runs, Harry Griffen might be the place. I usually only end up here when I don't feel like dealing with the crowds at Lake Murray, otherwise I'd rather go there.

Griffen park visitors don't regulate their dogs on a leash. I've seen dogs attacking other dogs. This is,a place for everyone to enjoy.

I was in the area of this park recently, and passed a parking area while driving on Bancroft. I was in need of a restroom so I turned at the first road after and that led to another, smaller parking area. I parked there, found the restroom I needed, then walked around a little bit. The park is on a slope. There is a covered area for family or company picnics@ some sort of a ball court. I walked down the slope to the other parking area. A dog would find plenty to sniff around at, but I didn't see much so I headed back to my truck. The parking area started filling. Some cars and vans with their clients, on outings. Some guy parked next to me was talking to himself and dumped what looked like grocery store dumpster finds out behind his vehicle, I guess to go through them. And commenting on stuff in my direction. Ok, time to go. 10 am by then so I made a mental note to come early again next time.

The birds can be a bit annoying, but guess that comes with the great outdoors. Definitely a nice spot to chill, take a walk and get those steps in. This area feels safe and well maintained. When I went, there weren't too many people, so it was pretty peaceful. The trail can get busy and there are bathrooms along the way (I didn't use them though) There's plenty of parking here, but just be sure you leave on time for closing. I've heard they lock up and it can be an issue with getting out. (not sure how true this is but I won't chance it) There is more parking elsewhere with trail access too, I just personally haven't found it.

After entering the main entrance, follow the road and turn right where you will see a yellow locked gate. This is the beginning of the paved walking trail. There's plenty of parking at the main entrance, and the paved trail is perfect for walkers, runners, bikers, and even kids tagging along. It's basically a choose-your-own-adventure: bird watching, fishing (permit required), or just a casual picnic. Bonus perks: lots of porta potties and benches when you need a breather. If you're holding out for a real restroom, there's one just past the second baseball field--plan accordingly. Photo is attached to show where to locate this. Heads up: the main gate is closed every 2nd Tuesday of the month, but don't panic--you can still access the trail through the neighborhood entrance off Baltimore Drive. Hope you enjoy this walking trail as much as I do.
