Blackened biscuits.

the hot bar is terrible the breakfast food looks dry the bacon was burnt I could not identify half the items on the bar. very surprisingly this is old town where I grew up

Three packages of very moldy ravioli from the Harris Teeter express lane on Duke Street in Alexandria.

We are longtime Express Lane customers at this HT. For years, our weekly order has included 5 gallons of nonfat HT milk. We stopped buying milk from this HT after months of gallon after gallon going bad near or before its sell-by date. (Milk should remain fresh ~1 week past its sell-by date.) We made multiple calls to no avail. HT said no one else raised any complaints. They said they would try to identify the issue. They offered us store credit. But the milk kept going bad. Today, the Express Lane team put three separate packages of moldy ravioli in our order. (See photo. Maybe check the refrigeration over there?) I can see missing the middle one. But the other two? Or all three? HT's Express Lane service is super-convenient. But not if we have to make separate trips to another store for milk. Or a return trip to HT because all the ravioli has mold on it.

Lobster roll!

This Harris Teeter has everything you'd expect with a good grocery store. A deli, fresh flowers, fruit, hot prepared food (buffet type style), meat and seafood counter, pharmacy, Redbox kiosks, Amazon lockers, and of course everything from wine/beer to frozen and pantry dry goods. They also have a small self-checkout and many regular lanes. My biggest complaint is the poor attitude of many of the workers. Never a smile or friendly interaction. I've been shopping here for 2 years now and have yet to interact with a friendly employee. But besides that I like shopping here because they carry quality brands at competitive prices.

Harris Teeter - -0/10 Online pickup...literally have to sit and wait every time, or get out and bang on the door, or hunt someone down inside the store.

No phone reception because you're in the basement of the garage and/or no one answers when you call. -When you arrive there is nowhere to park because customers shopping in store take the convenient pickup spots. -Every time I have to bang on the door and hope someone answers or go inside to find someone way in the front to alert them that I'm here (defeats the whole purpose). I'm always patient with the employees because this is an issue management needs to address ASAP and I know it's a headache for them too having to peek out the door to see if you're here, crazy. Someone literally needs to have a valet style post in the garage to communicate to employees who has arrived. At this point I need to get paid too because I'm having to help other customers figure out what to do as well...the whole process is chaotic for everyone. I almost need to make sure I have a full tank of gas waiting in this garage smh, GET IT TOGETHER!

This is the place where I discovered wine. Jeff and the rest of the incredibly friendly and…read moreknowledgeable staff are there for every customer, from the newbie to the aficionado. I no longer live in the neighborhood, but I stop by whenever I'm in the area (if I had a car, I'd go a lot more often, but it's not really accessible by public transit from where I live). They offer wines at every price point -- including a good number that are under $10 (far more than you'll find at, say, Best Cellars or Curious Grape). The selections are thoughtful; they work with good importers, which is key. I haven't been here for a tasting since 2006, but for several years they held tastings on Fridays and Saturdays hosted by one of their key importers. Those tastings opened my eyes to the world of wine, much to the chagrin of my wallet. I learned about everything from Gewurztraminer to Sekt to Torrontes. It's been all downhill since then. I will be forever grateful to Fern Street Gourmet for starting me off -- and I will keep dropping by whenever I can!

We have a couple wine shops within walking distance, but we go out of our way (not that far out,…read morebut enough to warrant a car ride) to support Fern Street Gourmet. FSG is sandwiched between One Good Tern Wild Bird store and Simply Fish restaurant in an odd layout of a strip mall off Quaker and Braddock in Alexandria. They have a vast selection of wines, ports, cheeses, caviar, and breads. What keeps us going back, and a lot of our friends talk about this, too, is that there is not a hint of pretention there. The owners are so very helpful, patient and kind. The prices are also comparable to bigger stores and chains. And, of course, they do generous case discounts. We normally buy cases of the Le Petit Duc La Porte (glad I'm typing it because I can't pronounce it) and we get a better price at Fern Street Gourmet than what they're selling it for at Whole Foods. Off-street parking is almost always available here. I know they do tastings, too, but have never been to one. If you're looking for a nice pairing for a special dinner or holiday meal but don't want to feel looked down upon like in some other wine joints, check out Fern Street. Clare, from Tallula wine bar, works here part-time, too, and really knows her stuff.
