Commenting in hopes someone sees it before hiring Harris to do any work. They've had my truck on and off since August 2025, and it's now October. My truck was blowing hot, and I assumed I had a ac line leak. They told me there wasn't a leak, just the control panel needing replaced. They charged $350 to do this, and when I got the truck back it didn't blow at all. They continued by putting 3 or 4 new control panels in, and in the end said they finally fixed it, but now there was a leak and needed another $530 to fix it. I ONLY agreed to continue because they confirmed the truck was blowing properly now. I took it home and it's not blowing at all again. I went in today and they now say it's likely not the control panel at all, but they only agreed to refund $335 dollars or leave the truck with them again after being argumentative and treating me like an idiot. My issue is simply the fact they tried the control panel multiple times, never fixed the blowing issue, lied and said they did so I'd spend another $530 to fix the leak, and now they say it's not the control panel at all. Called half a dozen local shops about replacing a stolen catalytic converter. Went with Harris because their quote was very reasonable, but mostly because instead of rattling off a number, they talked to me about what would drive the price and how to make the job less expensive. They wound up replacing the cat at an excellent price, and even fabricated a custom cage to protect it from future theft. Excellent, excellent service. My only criticism would be that the work took a while, but that's a very minor thing--they warned me in advance that they were backed up, and accurately predicted how long the job would take. Everyone I talked to there was smart, friendly, and helpful. The job was well done and inexpensive for what they did. Highly recommended. read more

Needed exhaust replaced entire system past the catalytic converter. Took it to 2 muffler Shops in Lawrence for bids which came in very high. Got a bid from Harris and the bid was about $500 cheaper and 2/3 the cost of the others. They did a great job and even stayed after closing to wait for my college age son to get a ride back to the shop to pick it up. Would definitely recommend. read more

I've been a regular customer at Harris Auto for the past year or so and was overall pleased with their service. However after just receiving a basic oil change on my new Subaru Outback, they charged me $90. They explained that the high price was due to the costly synthetic oil and oil filter. I remained skeptical and called a few other local mechanics. They gave some more reasonable estimates within the range of $50-$70. Harris Auto did agree to give me $10 off, since I have been a loyal customer, which I do appreciate. However their prices are too high and I believe unreasonable. read more

Had nothing but great service with Brian's shop. They usually completed the work in a day unless it was something major. You get what you pay for in this type of business. Don't like a local shop take it to the dealership, buy OEM parts, but then dont complain about the time and the cost. Hate to see people bashing Harris. Worst shop I have ever dealt with. I had my '02 Forester towed in due to fail to start. I was told after waiting 2 extra days that I needed a new engine for $5000. They did not diagnose anything. They checked the dipstick and gave the key a turn. I go in and get mixed up stories about my issue. Once I get her to admit they do not know why the car wont start and they just are trying ro sell a new engine...she says we are done. Tosses me my key and threatens to tow me if not off their lot by end of day. Worst customer service ever. STAY AWAY FROM HERE!!!....unless you are lookin to drop 5grand because your car didnt start. read more

Just a good, honest family business. Only been a couple of times, but I've been so happy with the service. The last time, they changed a wheel bearing while I waited, and while in the waiting area, I watched the fella behind the counter tell a young woman why her car just wasn't worth doing the work she thought she wanted. Unscrupulous, rude, unprofessional ... AVOID HARRIS AUTO REPAIR AT ALL COSTS! See my initial Yelp review dated 4/25/2016 for reference. I have no idea how these guys get 5-star ratings, other than from friends, but take this Yelp Elite's word for it, think twice before taking your car there because your or someone else's life could be in jeopardy if you do. I should have gone with my gut feeling on these guys. Something was just not right, but I could not put my finger on it. Now I know what the problem is. They either do shoddy work or charge people for doing nothing at all because the $600 brake job they "supposedly" did on my car in April nearly caused me to rear end a bus that decided to stop in front of me (for no apparent reason) a little over a month ago and less than 3 months and 500 miles after they "fixed" my brakes. As I mentioned in the review I wrote 3 days after they did (or did not do) the work referenced above, the brakes seemed no different than before I spent $600, but I trusted them and gave them the benefit of the doubt, assuming that the brakes worked fine and the vehicle was safe to drive. It is not. I was not very close to the bus I mentioned above, but when it unexpectedly stopped in the middle of a block for a jaywalking pedestrian, my brake pedal went straight to the floor and my car came to a very slow stop, barely missing the rear end of the bus. I was very lucky that I did not hit the bus, stopping inches from its bumper. Anyway, I was leaving town for a month and did not have time to take the vehicle in and tell them about the problem before I left, so I thought it could wait until I returned. Well, now I am back from my trip and decided to stop by Harris Auto Repair today to tell them about the problem with their brake job. As I explained the problem, to Lance I believe, it seemed obvious that he was not going to stand behind the repairs they may or may have not made. Instead, telling me all of the things that could possibly be wrong with my brake system, I then asked him if they had inspected the system when they performed the work in April and why I was having the same exact problem after spending $600 in their shop. If they were in-fact "professionals", they would have inspected the brake system thoroughly (which I paid an extra $86 for), diagnosed the problem correctly, and performed NECESSARY repairs, charging me a fair price for work performed. At this point he started to get indignant with me, raising his voice and saying "look Chris, we've been through this before ... blah, blah, blah". That was when I stopped listening, realizing he was not about to stand behind their shoddy work (which nearly caused an accident) and telling him "Fine, I'll just take it somewhere else to get your work fixed". On a similar note, a week or so ago (the day after I returned) I asked them for an estimate to have three belts replaced on the same vehicle (at which point I planned on telling them about the brake problem) and was quoted around $230, but I was alone and they could not shuttle me back and forth while the work was being performed, so I decided to go to my regular mechanic. Mike, at Don's Auto Center on 11th Street (near Haskell), quoted me $160 to replace the belts, which he did in an hour, charging me exactly what was quoted. I will never consider taking our cars to Harris Auto Repair again and highly recommend that you consider doing the same. I have had extremely poor experiences with mechanics in Lawrence (Das Autohaus is another example) where integrity appears to be severely lacking, Don's Auto Center being the sole exception. So take your vehicles there because they are honest, you can trust them, they do good work, and they will charge you a fair price ... unlike Harris Auto Repair. Terrible experience. My car got towed in, they charged me 400 dollars to "fix" t. As soon as I left it died again and wouldn't give me money back saying it wasn't the same issue. They said they would pay to get it towed back but I would have to pay full price for whatever they decided to fix this time. Car is still in there so we will see if they try this again. read more

We were visiting friends in De Soto and our AC broke on the way during the last hot spell. FOUR HOURS of no AC. I texted my friend and told her we would be hot and cranky when we got there. She contacted Harris and they got us in for the next day - a Saturday. We left the car on Friday night and hoped for the best. They called shortly after opening on Saturday, gave us an estimate, and promised to have it fixed that day. They did so even though it meant staying late for them. GREAT service and the AC has stayed cold since. We were very happy with their service. read more

Found out about this place when my car broke down and I had to get it towed. It's where I've been going to get my car serviced ever since! The staff are very friendly, after coming in a few times they start to remember your name and the car you drive, which is nice. I also like that they don't force you to make repairs that aren't necessary. They tell you when something is wrong, but they don't make you do anything about it if you don't need to. It's a great business, run by nice people, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone needing work on their vehicle. read more

This place was recommended to me by Pearson Collision (who are beyond amazing) and they are really great. I don't know anything about cars, and at other places in town (ahem... JACK ELLENA!) I have had scams thrown at me right and left. I used to take my brother in law or a male friend with me to every oil change and beyond hoping it would deter the jerks from insisting on wiper blades, air filters, and transmission flushes every 3 months. I never worry at Harris. They are extremely thorough and every time I have paid less than they quoted. Last time I was there they told me that something wasn't quite right in my fuel pressure monitor, but that it wouldn't effect my cars functioning in any way and that there was no need to fix it unless the "fuel cap" light was bothering me. Now THATS honesty! It's really great to not have to worry about this anymore. And they have also offered me free diagnostics almost every time I've been there. Really wonderful. read more

With deep regret , I need to update my review of this place. I suspect management has changed , because the guys I used to know are no longer in this place. I hate to say such strong words , but the current management is nothing but crooks. They fit every stereotype of the lazy dishonest mechanics. We've been bringing our cars here for years now, but unfortunately, after our most recent experience, I think we'll have to find somewhere else. Brought our car in for a tune up and oil change, expecting it would need a few repairs. I got a call from Robin, we went over the necessary repairs, totaling about $680. Decided which to do and which to hold off on due to cost. Roughly $460 now and the remainder to be done when we could bring it back. We pick up the car and only the oil change had been done, none of the repairs we had discussed. We still ended up paying $450 because they replaced the rotors, which was not discussed with me at any point. My husband picked up the car and came home, and upon realizing that what we had agreed upon hadn't been done, I called back. I spoke with one of the mechanics who claimed he was "sure I had been told the rotors needed to be done". I had not been updated on that fact, or claim, rather, and I'm wondering if the rotors even needed to be done or if it was a bait and switch and an unnecessary and costly repair. It could have been poor communication, we've experienced that from them before but never with the result of a several hundred dollar repair we didn't authorize. All of this could have been solved easily with a simple apology and acknowledgement of a mistake or lapse in communication on their part. Perhaps throw in a free oil chance next time because this WAS on them either way. No such thing happened though, it took a long time to even get an apology for the poor communication, both people I spoke with were rude and defensive, ultimately trying to blame me for their mistake. Unfortunately, I don't feel we can trust them to be upfront and honest with us now, and sadly we'll be finding a new place unless they choose to reach back out to us and try and make it right. read more

Since moving to Lawrence a couple years ago, I have used the business several times thanks to my lemon of a car. Each time, I felt as if they respected me and the business that I was bringing to them. More importantly, however, they spent time explaining what was wrong with my vehicle, why it should be repaired, and whether any of the repairs could wait a little while. When my car finally died, they took me out to their garage and walked me through everything that was wrong with my car and why they thought it was not worth repairing.
