This place is such a small hidden gem and if you ain't local you won't hear about it. Very cute and roomy place the bbq is a bit different, but it's amazing. The service is self checkout but they will bring it the made to order foods. The menu is simple but yet effective. Got the family platter that feeds 4-6 people, pork belly burnt ends, and Mac and cheese. The family platter consist of beef cheek, brisket, ribs. smoke chicken, pulled pork, sausages, 6 sides, cornbread and rolls. Each meat tasted delicious and the beef cheek stole the show for me. Super tender and it just falls apart and has so much flavor. Not a fan of the chicken, it was a bit dry. All the meats were perfect. 5/5. The side were various but I think the beans were the best. 4.3/5. The corn bread, forget about it.s the best corn bread I tasted. You gotta try it. 5/5. The pork belly burnt ends were amazing. That was the first time I ever had pork belly burnt ends and I would get it again. 5/5. The Mac and cheese, sorry I was not impressed. I wish I would have got the spuds fried in beef tallow. The Mac and cheese had hardly any flavor and was super liquid. 1/5. Overall this place is a must try.

    Pork Belly Burnt Ends

This place has such a very welcoming and modern look to the restaurant. Plenty of tables inside, there is an outdoor and indoor section. First come first serve on tables. Everything is pretty much self serve. Came here Friday evening, their parking parking lot is small, so you will have to be prepared for street parking. You order first then grab any available table. The staff is very nice and the food was worth the long wait. My family and I waited about 25 minutes to order so it wasn't too bad and the crowd kept coming. We ordered the platter that feeds 4-6 people which came with chicken, pulled pork, sausages, brisket, beef cheek, and the six sides. Since it was our first time and we didn't really know what to order. For extras we ended up getting the Mac and Cheese, along with the Pork Belly Burnt Ends. Honestly, the flavoring was pretty good and moist. I wasn't a fan of the chicken though it was dry to me. The cornbread was pretty delicious, Pork Belly burnt ends with the sauce it had tons of flavor, and the brisket were our favorite dishes. I think for next time I rather just order certain meats individually to try out instead of the platter. I would definitely come back again.

    Wagyu tri tip sandwich

Harper Barbecue absolutely delivered. Came with a group so we could try a little bit of everything. The Wagyu tri-tip sandwich was the standout. Super tender, juicy, and packed with rich flavor without being overly heavy. You can really taste the quality of the meat. The turkey sandwich was also impressive -- smoky, moist (not dry at all), and really well balanced. We shared a half pound of tri-tip and half pound of pulled pork, both cooked perfectly. The tri-tip was sliced thick and flavorful, and the pulled pork was juicy. We also got the cheddar jalapeño sausage which was the perfect balance of smokey and spicy. The mac & cheese was creamy, comforting, and exactly what you want as a BBQ side. Sauce-wise, the Honey Bear and Cali Gold were our favorites -- both added the perfect extra layer of flavor without overpowering the meat. The space itself is trendy and welcoming, with great covered outdoor seating that makes it perfect for groups. The employees were genuinely friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better. For the quality of meat and portion sizes, the price point felt more than fair. Definitely a spot we'll be coming back to.

Decided that it was finally time to try Harper for their 1 year anniversary where ribs were $1 each and happy hour was all day. We didn't get to try the happy hour menu, but everything sounded so good. Our favorite meat cut was the beef cheek, super tender and a smokey rub. My favorite side was the cornbread, literally so moist and flavorful. Be sure to get their banana pudding for dessert :) The staff were so nice and friendly, great spot for date night or family outing. It looks bigger than it is, with seating indoors and outdoors. There's a small parking lot, but street parking isn't difficult to find. ig: @cravingswithcat

Today was their one year anniversary. Happy hour was all day and you could get pork ribs for a buck each limit five. I got my five ribs, some beef cheek, fried pickles, and the bratwurst sandwich. Like my last review, the ribs had a bit of a tug. They need more time on the smoker. The beef cheek melted in my mouth. I love bratwurst, and theirs was really good. I also enjoyed the fried pickles very much. They were slammed today but service was fast. This is one of the best BBQ joints around.

Chicken wings $6?? 2/5 Happy hour menu. These came out crispy and glazed, not a huge fan of the glaze, little tangy for me and the inside was dry which is sad. Would pass Pork sliders $6?? 3/5 Happy hour. Small and cute. They were fine, but they also weren't woah. Would pass Smoked salmon fish plate $22 3.5/5 Good, but I think king ora salmon shines when it's served hot. The tartar sauce is quite good! Brussel sprouts $14 4/5 Very tasty! Not too sweet from the balsamic, it was super crispy the ends of the leaves. The lime on the side helps keeps things interesting, and the creamy sauce helped to quell any tanginess. Ate for 2.5 and am full

The ribs were good, great crusty bark, smoke ring. I think my boyfriend found the meat a little dry. I thought it was ok and decent flavor. The beef cheek ($19/half pound) was definitely fatty, but the flavor was a bit too strong, maybe too umami. My favorite meat item was the wagyu tri tip, it was good quality, definitely fat marbled. The maitake mushroom ($18) was delicious and nicely paired with the tahini sauce, not too overwhelming. Pork belly burnt ends were straight forward, not too fatty, but sweet. You order meat first, then hot and cold sides. At the register you pay or order additional items like happy hour. The service was more like fast casual. They have food runners, but everything else was self service like hot sauces, utensils, take out containers. It's a beautiful space inside with indoor and outdoor seating. They have bar seating with tvs, serving wine and beer. They have a parking lot, but it is easier to find street parking. I would possibly return and try the bbq picahna, that's a cut you don't see often at bbq joints.

Wedge Salad - packaged to go
    John S.

Came back again, this time with my wife, trying to keep things a bit healthier with the holidays right around the corner. I ordered the wedge salad, and she went with the farro bowl with steak plus the jalapeño cornbread roll. The wedge salad was good, but noticeably smaller than last time (see photos). The farro bowl was just okay--missing that "wow" factor or any real pop of flavor. The cornbread is still solid, but no honey butter this time... which feels like a small but important miss. Overall, this landed as a 3-star experience for me. That said, I'm not giving up yet. I'll be back again and hoping they get the train back on the tracks.

Harper bbq is the spot! Located in Costa Mesa, Harper bbq serves up fresh and delicious meats and sides. Lots of seating inside and outside, a great place for big groups and families. Park on the street or in the small lot. Meats: I've been a few times with friends and family. We've ordered the ribs (fan favorite), pulled pork (yum), tri-tip (yum), beef cheek, chicken, and sausage. Sides: definitely get the Mac and cheese! The beans and potato salad are also good, they are just vinegar based so if you're not into that then it might not be for you. We also tried the banana bread pudding and it was delicious! I'll go back just for that. Overall a great addition to Costa Mesa and can't wait to go back.

    Platter for 4-6
    Danny N.

Wow, I highly recommend getting beef cheeks and ribs. Those two were the absolute best imo. My friends think the Picahana is the best though. I think its good but I definitely liked the beef cheeks better. You can try all three and see what you like best! The beef cheeks were so tender they literally fell apart when we tried to stab a fork into it. So yummy! The ribs fall right off the bone when you bite into them, amazing! We got a platter for 4-6 people. None of us really touched the pulled pork, it wasn't that good. The sausage is sausage, nothing to say about it. The chicken was just good. I would avoid the tri tip. It was very tough for me, maybe I got a bad cut? I let all my friends try the tip ;) and they also didn't like it. I personally was not a fan of any of their sides except the mac n cheese which was pretty good while the cornbread was hella amazing. So fucking addicting and good! (The cornbread has cheese in it for you lactose intolerant people). The sides we got: 2x salad (the whole thing is brussel sprouts no lettuce..), chili (good as far as chili goes, but I don't like chili), coleslaw (same feeling as I have towards chili), rice salad, and I guess another chili? One had cheese on top and the other didn't. I didn't choose the sides so no idea what that is. We also got their pitcher of Oktoberfest beer and it was good! I enjoyed it. Service was great, they had very nice and attentive workers! The environment was spectacular, I liked the outside area. It looked like a bougie camping site. The hand soap is nice, it is sandy.

Amazing! The food, the staff, the environment, it is all so amazing. I like to bring my friends here for a change of pace and they are always wildly pleased. Brought my friend for her bday and the staff were so kind and gave us an amazing key lime tart. I love their Rueben sandwich! But I love all of their food tbh. This will be a staple for me.

    Outdoor Patio

Overall this is a pretty cool spot. We went on a Sunday around 4pm and it was pretty empty maybe 4 parties so it felt very casual and comfortable but I could see this place getting busy later. They do have a lot of outdoor and indoor seating, which is is nice. The BBQ was pretty good i would have to say the pork rib rub is a little sweet but i did find it didn't really need Bbq sauce to taste good which in my opinion is great! Only downside here is the ordering. You order in a chipotle style manner, each station takes a little while depending on what you order so the line gets backed up. Also service at the time of our visit was a bit awkward, there were 4 employees standing at the stations with no customers and they all kinda just stared at us and we weren't greeted. Overall a good bbq spot, and would come back again for the food and open outdoor vibe.

How does it compare to heritage in San Juan?

Harper is much better. Heritage is overpriced and overrated. .My favorite BBQ however is Hickory and Spice.

The pulled pork sandwich on the brioche bun with the slaw is super good, and I really appreciate that they don't drench the meat in sauce beforehand. They let you choose your own sauces at the table, and all of them are really tasty. The fries are great, the beans are good, and the sides overall are solid. The restaurant itself is also really nice with plenty of parking, family friendly, huge indoor seating area with heating, patio seating, and even a little bar area. The only reason it's not a full 5 stars for me is because I've been here probably 6 or 7 times now, and the pulled pork consistently has a little too much fat/gristle mixed in. Sometimes you'll get a bite that's mostly squishy fat, and occasionally the smoke flavor can taste a little overpowering, almost like extra smoke flavoring was added. It's not a deal breaker at all because the food is still really good, but if they trimmed the pork a bit more and toned down the smoke flavor slightly, this would easily be a 5-star spot for me.

The cake fee included 1 candle, a serving cake knife, serving plates and plastic forks... I saw a group come with a cake and they ended up not cutting it and just carrying it back home. If you plan a birthday or celebration here, don't bring your cake unless you want to pay $30.. kind of ruined the ambiance especially if you plan to surprise someone.

*** SCAM ALERT *** I…read moredon't use the word "SCAM" lightly, but that's what this was. My adult son called in a $281.62 order off the menu for Mother's Day. They would not accept the order or payment over the phone because the order was "too big." They asked that someone go there and pay up front for the entire order. Since it was the evening before Mother's Day, I drove to them and paid for the order. Yes, I was also presented with a minumum 20% TIP screen, which I declined. When I got there at pickup time (4:00pm) on Mother's Day, the price changed to $325.51. I was told that, for some reason, they had cut about 50% larger portions than the menu specified (see the line items, which should have been 1 lb. each), so they charged me for the difference ($325.51 - $281.62) which was $43.89 (about 50% more for the 2 items they cut heavier). No, there was no mention when I placed the order that the total cost might change due to extra meat. Neither is it shown on their web site or printed menus. When I protested, there was no option. If I don't pay the $43.89 difference, I don't get the Mother's Day food. After about 20 minutes of bickering at the counter with two different clerks (note the time stamp differences on the credit card slips), I was given my original order, with a net price reduction of ($281.62 - $254.93) $26.69. My persistence had paid off. On a positive note, the cook did, twice, walk up to me and quietly apologize for what was going on. I know many folks would have folded in this situation, but that's not my nature. I don't stand for dishonesty. Yes, it was embarrassing, other clients in line were not happy (I let them skip ahead of me so as not to inconvenience them). None of them had price increases. I don't know if the clerks wanted a tip because the management doesn't pay them much, or it this goes deeper and is standard operating procedure that assumes most clients will simply approve of the overage and pay up. In any case, from this client's point of view, this is a SCAM! When it was all over, I took my 11 and 12 year old grandsons (who had been sitting patiently waiting for grandpa to pay) and my food package to the car, drove home and proudly presented the meat to my family. After all, I am a hunter-gatherer; and the food was great!

Wow apparently this place has been here for a while but I have not been at all until recently!…read moreDuring one of my usual stay over at the Westin nearby, my friend and I came here for dinner because we were craving soupy food and Yelp suggested this place which I was like... where is this?! Turns out it's at the same location at Made coffee, which I come also quite frequently! What a nice discovery for me! Food was really good! We got the seafood pancake, which was crispy and flaky and NOT overly oily at all like most other Korean places! I really liked this dish! Next was my Kalbi Tang, beef short ribs soup, so flavorful with two huge short ribs with bones, where the meat just fall off the bone easily. My friend got the spicy beef noodle soup, which she said was very spicy but very flavorful. Food was great but what really stood out was their service! I love everyone who worked there especially their servers and the nice young girl who was helping us, and young man! They are super nice, super attentive, super polite, and just wonderful people! I cannot recommend this place enough! If you're in the mood for Korean, or soup, or flavory good quality food, this is your place!!!

Each dish was seasoned beautifully, and the side dishes were absolutely marvelous. The service was also wonderful from start to finish. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately, and I truly appreciated the calm and welcoming atmosphere. It was such a refreshing experience compared to another place I had been visiting for over three decades. The restaurant itself is open, spacious, and very comfortable. I also noticed how clean and well-maintained the restrooms were, which I always appreciate. Our waiter even informed us that the food is MSG-free, which made me especially happy. This is definitely our new favorite spot for soft tofu soup!
