In my handrolls, I've noticed there is barely any fish. Basically, the front of the hand roll looks full. As you're taking a bite, the handroll is narrow, seaweed is chewy, and lacks rice too. Feels poorly put together. The salmon poke would have odd/uneven chopped pieces. Texture of some of the raw fish was questionable at times. Grilled fish is usually lightly seasoned. I love this location. You can't see the beach but you are close enough to stop by one. Lots of seating. Decent cocktails. Parking can be hit or miss depending on the time/day. Service is also hit or miss. Not that anyone is awful. If you're looking to try something new and ask for a recommendation, you can tell if someone is having a bad/long day. A solid place to get poke from in Newport. I'm from the South Bay so I'm a little biased towards jus poke and ali'i but this was a pretty good option here in Newport. Comes with chips so you can order it alone if you wanted! The ceviche also comes with chips, naturally, and it's a great intro to raw fish...well because it's technically not raw. Lime juice chemically cooks the fish so it's not considered raw at all! It's acidic, vegetal, a tad briney, and overall super refreshing! Love to see it! We also got these breaded calamari fries. I don't know how they do it, but they bread and fry the most TENDER calamari I've ever had the pleasure of consuming. It comes with some tomato salsa-esque dip as well as their tommy sauce, and it's a treat no matter what you use. This is a must-try for me. And here, a burrito to share! Popped in for lunch on a random Saturday. Weather was nice and this place was hopping. Decided to dine in and ordered chips and guac the fish burrito and the fish taco. Also a nice glass of sauvignon blanc. Walk up style place so stand in line and take a number. Someone will bring you your food and drink. Guacamole was good, could have used a little more heat and acid for my personal preference but still good. Hubby lived his burrito but it was a lot to eat. We could have shared than in hindsight. I hate to not give bearflag a 5 star review but my last two visits have been a little disappointing compared to their standard service. I did come over Labor Day weekend so it was extra busy, which is understandable. But after standing in like for over 40 minutes, our food then took a significant amount of time to come out and when it did, my plate was cold since they were probably waiting to complete the whole order. Despite the temp, the shrimp was really well cooked and had great flavor. The visit prior to that, I met some girlfriends for dinner and our friend that ordered poke was forgotten about. Even after reminding a server, her food came out over 30 minutes after everyone else at the table. And she had poke so it was not that it was awaiting to be cooked, just forgotten. What a pleasant surprise to find this local gem nestled right in the middle of the Newport Beach shopping area. It's a walk up to order and they bring you your food kind of place.
