Had a great lunch here, exactly what I was hoping for. Ordered an eight piece wing dinner fried hard with mild sauce and a pizza puff for good measure. Ate the pizza puff on the drive home, was perfectly tasty and greasy - great texture and flavor. The wings traveled quite well and had the right amount of mild. Chicken was still nice and crisp, wings and fries were both well cooked. Should note I ordered for takeout through Yelp and I arrived at Harold's right as my order was ready. Best Chicken in town! Expect a wait as all is made once ordered and this place is usually packed. Native to AZ I have not found better lemon pepper chicken or okra. I need to preface this review by saying that I LOVED Harold's. It was my go-to chicken restaurant ever since Ezekiel's closed a few years ago. I am now questioning whether I can ever order from here again, however, and felt I needed to warn others who are considering ordering from here. I placed my most recent order from Harold's on Monday, 12/26 and received my order at around 6:00pm. Other than the chicken I ordered from Harold's the only thing I had eaten that day was a couple of hashbrowns for breakfast from McDonalds. Around 1am, after having gone to bed, I woke up and became *violently sick*. So sick, in fact, that I ended up having to go to the Emergency Room because I could not stop vomiting. The ER had to give me prescription-strength medicine to calm the nausea, put me on an IV because I couldn't keep fluids down, and run a battery of tests. At the end of the day the ER suggested it was a case of acute food poisoning and, after giving me more medication to moderate the symptoms, sent me home. It took me three days to recover total. I've never had an issue like this with the food from here in the past that I recall, and the food has always been super delicious. I simply cannot fathom in this instance, however, how else I would have gotten food poisoning when the only thing I had the entire day aside from two McDonald's hashbrowns was chicken from Harold's. So if you decide to order from here please be careful. I love the food and would give it 5 stars but I am extremely scared to order again due to my most recent experience. read more

Service is iffy. Made a big order last night. Food preparation and presentation varies by which day of the week you go. Fl8 piece fried shrimp had no batter on it. But pieces of batter thrown in tray. Smh pissed.... I'm guessing different cooks and staff. If you order to go please check your bags before you drive 25 minutes home an realize you have no sauce... Waited awhile to try this spot out being when it first opened the lines were ridiculously long. I figured it was because the chicken was just that good. Finally had it last night. It was ok chicken nothing special. Definitely wouldn't wait over an hour like people were when they first opened. The sauce they gave was good, tasted like sweet & sour sauce to me. Overall the chicken was okay & freshly made the fries were also fresh with no type of seasoning- even if they were just salted maybe that would have helped- but probably won't be my first choice to eat when asked. read more

If not all the way there, it's definitely close to me. I recommend getting your wings fried hard with lemon pepper and all the mild sauce they can give you. First friends of mine from Chicago swear by this place. I don't know why. I ordered chicken wings, catfish, perch and onion rings. The chicken tasted like olde grease and was beyond crispy. It was down right hard. The fish was the same way, hard. Flavor of the fish was bland. The onion rings were more breading than onion. I assumed because it took over an hour for my order it would be perfect. Far from it. It hurts me to give such a bad review because I do all I can to support black owned businesses. Not a good experience and never even stepped into the restaurant. I used to go to Harold's all the time in Chicago and remember it being amazing. Found out there's on here in AZ. Called one night to pick up a order I looked at their menu prior to calling and told them I wanted the bucket of chicken 25 wings. I get told I have to pay over the phone a few times which I thought was strange and I agree. I get put on hold and another lady picks up the phone and I give her my order again. They tell me they no longer have the buckets it would just be all individual meals... I ask how much 24 wings would be and they tell me it's $65 dollars..... I pause and ask for confirmation of the price... "65 dollars for 24 chicken wings..what is that like 2.75 per wing ". I know that we're in a shit inflation but damn really 65 bucks for 24 wings.... Great fried chicken with the right amount of seasoning and a hint of spice. I got the chicken dinner which had fries and cole slow as sides. My friend got the catfish which he said was good with a side of fried okra. The okra was enough for two or three servings. read more

First the bad, it takes a long time from the time you order to when your order is ready to go. First visit, we ordered Chicken. It was delicious. The chicken, white and dark meat, was moist, tender, full of flavor, WAS NOT BRINED (a good thing as it was not another Church's Chicken clone), and the crust had the right mix of crunch that was very light, not thick and hard, and full of flavor that puts KFC, Churches, and Chick fil a to shame. Popeye's has great spicy chicken, but its crust is much harder, more oily, and the pieces are far smaller. Second visit, we bought catfish. It has the same great crust, taste, and light crunch as the chicken. The breast meat at most chicken places often turns out too dry. That is not the case with Harold's. Based on my experiences, the Chicken and Catfish are the best, but the wait time is poor. read more

To preface, my review is not about the food quality. That was actually on point with the best Harold's I remember from back home which is 87th and the Dan Ryan. The flavors were exactly as I remembered them. The chicken livers were tender and crispy. The chicken wings with mild sauce definitely were right on target with crispiness and taste. However, the overall experience was way worse than the Harold's at 127th and Halsted. The first issue was how long it took for me to get my order. Many people complained of waiting anywhere from 3-5 hours to get their orders. I was no exception. From being in the line to ordering to walking out with my food took literally 4.5 hours or more. While the owners and employees came through the line with samples to keep the natives from getting restless, that didn't stop the grumbling when it was announced they had run out of staples like gizzards. Could I have called the order in or contacted an online service like GrubHub? According to management, they were not taking any online or phone orders due to the insane crowds that have hit this place since it opened on 10/9. The next issue was being unable to order larger quantities of wings than 6. I had to settle for that despite the person wanting 8. However, I saw people leaving the store with buckets upon buckets of chicken earlier in the evening. In discussing this particular issue, I was told the wings they had gotten from the vendor were frozen and they could not thaw them fast enough to meet demand. However, in a situation like this, there should have been some sort of contingency plan to ensure customers were satiated. Sure, they gave out vouchers and candies but that does not account for the fact they ran out of gizzards. After finally getting in, placing my order, and resting, I was called to the counter to pick up my order. When checking the bag for my order of a 1/2 chicken mild sauce, 6 wings with mild sauce on the side, and one fried okra, I found three orders of okra. Needless to say, I was livid. After that, I was approached by a "manager" who said he got a complaint about me taking monies for another order. Then he proceeded to explain how that was adding time to the wait of other customers. Newsflash: Instead of harassing me about that, how about handling your QA (Quality Assurance) to make sure that orders are correct? Your crew actually spent more time fixing the mistakes made on orders which led to delays in the line. How about making sure you have more than one supplier so you can adequately meet demand? How about ensuring that your POS (Point of Sale) system is giving your cooks the right orders? Those things are what will seriously impact your revenue until they are fixed. The bright spots included one of the owners who understood my frustrations and many of the folks I was in line with who made things fun. read more

Harold's is about 30 minutes from me so I don't get it as often but I was in the area last night so decided I would make my way. Started calling around 8:30pm to place an order and just get info like "when are y'all taking last orders" and things like that, and no one ever answered. My boyfriend called twice and I did as well. It just rang no voicemail or automated info message. Now y'all do have online ordering but I was nervous to put in an online order, I get there and y'all closed. Hence the reason for me calling. Still decided to go cause I don't mind waiting on my food. We pull up at 9:11, door locked and man at the register with the black cowboy hat gave us the we closed motion. Now atp I was prepared to get there and something like this happen, but that sucks. Online says closed at 9:30pm, on their actual door it says 9:45pm. I just wanted the communication to be better. If y'all not gon answer the phone atleast give us a automated message "we take last orders at 9pm" something! Cause I'm not gon lie if it say y'all don't close until 9:30pm I expect to be able to pull up at 9:15 and still get food unless said otherwise. read more

The food is fresh and delicious, However the service is Excruciatingly Slow. And a bit indifferent. "Dropped Fresh" = No sense of urgency Whatsoever. It's ok though, they only let 5 people in at a time. Sadly(for Harolds), that line out front wont last once the newness wears off. I am a Big fan of chicken liver, which is hard to find. That being said, I honestly believe I could drive down to Durants and enjoy their chicken liver entree and cocktail in the time it would take to Place and Receive my order from Harolds. We decided to go back a few day later right before they opened, same thing, only we didn't have to wait 3 hours, but a long line was forming behind us. Occasionally a little to hard fried or salty but that happened once and I've been no exaggeration +40x in the past two years every Sunday for football baby. Listen Start with FRESH WHITE BREAD, and put some hot sauce, ketsup, then some WELL - COOKED FRIES, and some sauce, then the chicken of choice (mine was 2 breast dinner, I got a breast and breast piece with dried sauce on a small portion of each piece and the fries were undercooked and not palatable. I ordered 20 wings and a large liver. Being from the south side of Chicago I definitely know what Harold is suppose to taste like. It was nothing like Chicago. People from Arizona does not know the real taste of Harold chicken shack because I must say the livers was horrible, they were old and hard and they mixed gizzards in with my order and they put load of salt on them. I waited an hour for my order and drove over 15 miles to get the taste of Harold chicken. I will never go back again. This was very disappointed and you all really need to get the right and original ingredients that Harold used in his chicken and not substitute.
