I will say over the years this hospital has evolved. I walked into the ER with some of the worst abdominal pain I've ever felt in my life. I was put in a room within 15 minutes, vitals taken, and waiting for a nurse. The wait was no more than a half hour. I explained what was going on and she said the doctor would be in to talk with me, the wait on the doctor was 10-20 minutes that felt like forever because I was in so much pain, but looking back I am grateful To have been seen as quickly as I was. We ruled out things with imagining and blood work, ultimately we found what was going on and I was in emergency surgery shortly afterwards. Both the ER staff and surgery team that night were so compassionate, understanding and informative. Despite it being midnight they even let my fiancé come see me for accouple minutes before and after the surgery, they were showing her the same level of compassionate and care they showed me. Plus it was helpful to have her answer some questions for me as I was sleepy from pain meds. I deducted a star for the nurses in the unit I was staying in after my surgery. The overnight staff were great, and made sure all my needs were met, including water blankets, helping me in and out of the bathroom. But the switch in staff in the morning wasn't the best. I was discharged with no clear aftercare instructions , I had to ask when I could return to work as she excused me for just the day I had surgery, and then had to walk out to the lobby after having surgery with no support, but to be fair maybe I wasn't vocal enough about my needs I was just ready to Get out of there.

Kent Hospital - Confirmed HEART ATTACK but discharged as "chest pain"

I want to start with a full disclosure because I think it's important. I'm a physician in a…read moresurgical subspecialty, but I have never been affiliated with Kent Hospital or any hospital in Rhode Island. I don't have privileges here, I don't work here, and I have no professional connection to the organization whatsoever. My perspective is simply that of a physician whose family member recently became a patient. To say I came away impressed would be an understatement. Like many healthcare professionals, I tend to notice the little things. How efficiently people communicate. Whether nurses seem supported. How quickly diagnostic studies are performed. Whether the physicians appear engaged. Those details often tell you far more about a hospital than any glossy brochure ever could. From the moment my relative arrived, everything moved with remarkable efficiency. The Emergency Department was organized, the staff remained calm despite what appeared to be a busy day, and there was a genuine sense that everyone knew their role. We never felt forgotten, and there was always someone willing to answer questions. If the person we asked didn't have the answer, they found someone who did instead of giving us the runaround. That level of communication is something every hospital should strive for. The nursing staff deserves special recognition. They were attentive, compassionate, and incredibly professional. They balanced kindness with confidence, which is reassuring for both patients and families. The physicians were equally impressive, taking the time to explain their thought process and discuss the plan of care in language everyone could understand. As a physician, I was also struck by how quickly ancillary services were able to turn things around. Diagnostic imaging was performed promptly, laboratory and pathology results were available surprisingly fast, and there never seemed to be unnecessary delays in moving the evaluation forward. That kind of efficiency doesn't happen by accident. It reflects good systems and good leadership. The hospital itself isn't the newest facility you'll ever walk into, but it's clean, well maintained, and clearly cared for. I'd much rather see a hospital invest in excellent people and efficient patient care than marble floors and fancy artwork in the lobby. From environmental services to patient transport, every employee we encountered was courteous and took pride in what they were doing. I also noticed that the Emergency Department appears to be undergoing expansion, and that's genuinely encouraging. Based on what I experienced, this is a hospital worth investing in. Kent has a reputation that some people still associate with years gone by. In my opinion, that reputation no longer reflects reality. Hospitals evolve, leadership changes, and cultures improve. Based on this experience, Kent deserves to be judged on what it is today, not what it may have been years ago. I don't hand out praise lightly, especially when it comes to healthcare. I spend my career inside hospitals, so my expectations are probably higher than most people's. Kent exceeded them. If my family ever needed hospital care again in Rhode Island, I would feel entirely comfortable bringing them here. Outstanding work by everyone involved.

Once admitted to the ER, I was amazed. I was in room 36. My first ER nurse at 4 am was absolutely amazing. She spent every spare minute she had with me between her rounds. I am not needy. I think she just felt like I needed someone. She left at 7 am. My next nurse was just as amazing. The ER doctor had several tests performed. He felt it was my gallbladder. A couple hours later the surgeons agreed. I was prepped for emergency surgery at 11 am. The surgery normally last 45 minutes. Mine lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes due to complications. So, the surgeons took no shortcuts. I spent the night. My room nurse was also very attentive and kind. All in all, the entire Kent team all worked together to pull off this life saving diagnosis and treatment plan. Thanks all!

She was always clean and dressed and felt SAFE there. The staff was amazing with the patients and with my family. The doctor was genuinely involved with her and really seemed to have her best interest at heart. The same goes for the Social workers. Medication changes were closely monitored and vitals were also monitored. The staff was friendly and kind! I would not hesitate to send an elderly loved one there.

When I first was admitted there by ambulance, they took me to a hallway that was to the side. In this hallway, a staff member came out and asked me a couple of questions like what was my DOB and my full name. Standerd stuf. Then as I am sitting there, she reaches over and jerks my stuffed animal (it was a cat) away from me. No warning, nothing. Fast forward about a hour and I FINALLY am told that I can be taken back to the unit. It felt like a mile walk. I'm not joking. it was such a long walk AND I have a condition that makes my legs go weak. On the unit service was subpar. Nothing happened to pass the time and they separated the boys and girls by gender for pretty much everything except groups. The boys would get to watch full blown movies and play games and the girls were stuck coloring with 1/4 of a crayon and watching spongebob on repeat. The boys would also be allowed to wear shorts while they were banned, along with ANY type of legging and jean from girls. yeah. Several times there were major incidents on the unit which led people being RESTRAINED in front of us and there was no effort to tell us to move on the staffs part. lowkey it was criminal. There was only 2 staff members that I felt remotely safe with and that was it. The days I spent on the unit were filled with fear and anxiety for my life. As far as social workers, I saw mine twice in a 5 day stay, once to tell me that a three day had been signed for me and the other that I needed to fill out a safety plan. My psychiatrist I saw a total of two times and I had less than five minutes total of convo with him. PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE

Five Stars! We were visiting Newport for a wedding when one of our family members became very ill,…read morevery quickly. What followed was a frightening week that took us from the ER, to a regular patient room, to the ICU, and finally to recovery. At every step, the nurses and doctors were incredibly competent, kind, attentive, and upbeat. They actually took the time to contact medical facilities back home to obtain important pulmonary, cardiac, and other medical records, making sure they had the information needed to provide the best possible care. Our family member arrived on a very serious downward trajectory and, after a week in their care, left the hospital doing so much better. We could not be more grateful to the doctors, nurses, and entire staff who cared for our family during a very scary time. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Five stars without question.

I chose the Newport Hospital. I was unaware that I was being admitted for overnight. I tried to leave and was +stopped by the emergency room contracted security (Securitas). I proceeded to dial 911 from my cell phone and told the 911 operator that I was being held against my will at the Newport Hospital. I was then told, "there is nothing I can do, you'll have to stay". I was then told by a hospital staff member{CNA} Certified Nursing Assistance that they were going to take my cell phone and Apple watch. I refused and three Securitas security personnel grabbed me as i was sitting on a bed and physical took my cell phone and watch from me, I was treated worse than a prisoner in a third world country. i was lied to about when I would be discharged. I was finally discharged at around 11:45 am the next day after answering 5 questions from a contacted counselor. This is the way a veteran gets treated! All this was about a money grab by the Newport Hospital because i have insurance {United Healthcare} and {VA Healthcare). I did not need to have been admitted. Just Vitals and Blood was all that was required. My out of state Saturday function I was scheduled to attend was missed. Veterans, this is a warning!; you are nothing but guaranteed income for a medical facility. P.S. I can't wait to see what the bill is from the Newport Hospital!

Tight visitor parking but free!…read more I had no idea there were visiting hours! (Note: I would understand a nighttime cut off.) FYI: 10am-1pm, 4-7pm. Luckily when I entered to visit someone, it was 3:40. I did have to wait about 15 minutes in line to register with the lobby staff as a visitor. Standing in the line, we were next to the exit door that kept swinging open and getting hit with bursts of cold, January air! I have to say, this was a terrible system. Also, apparently kids under 13 can't visit. My 13 year old was with me and I would have been really upset if I found out after standing in line. This was not posted anywhere but apiece of paper handed to me at the check in station. There is a waiting area. Someone alerts you once it hits 4pm and you can then go and visit. I have to say, I disliked the process. It was clearly posted on the patients door that I needed PPE equipment to visit. The nurses station quickly set us up for success. KUDOS to Miriam. About a year ago at a nearby hospital this was the case with my father but nothing was posted and I found out AFTER I had already been visiting with him! The Nurse we had was well liked by our patient but I found her to be a know it all. Telling my daughter what her pathway to college should be. (Not nursing either.) She also didn't get the message we were visiting and just stood around and took up a lot of our patients time. Keep in mind, we offered to leave to let her do her duties but she rejected. It was mostly standing around and being a part of our time. Overall, our older family members really prefer Miriam. I did think the room was very clean and the floor we were on was quiet.
