I bought my house in 2007. The landscaping was dominated by Home Depot plants unsuitable for the soil and the climate. I have propagated my yard with plants from Harlequin's Gardens. They had so many plants! We were mainly looking for flowers and they had a lot of native plants to choose from. We planted the flowers after they sat for a few days and they're growing like crazy! The staff was super helpful while we were shopping, helping us find stuff and get a box to take the plants home safely. Not a huge shop but so many plants from flowers to trees. There were seeds all on the wall inside with the gardening supplies. They had a few items that would be good for gifts, they have some art, books, kitchen items, and house plants (succulents, jades, etc...). They have a cute shop with good quality product, kind staff and good value. Would recommend for plant people! read more

Harlequin's Gardens is best for the experienced gardener. They are the best source of organic, pesticide-free and drought-hardy native plants. The plants don't look their best in the spring because they are dormant. So a beginner would likely dismiss these as dead plants for sale. But long-time Rocky Mountain gardeners know these dry-looking tufts will wake up and grow into healthy plants by late spring or early summer. I've bought many of my starter native plants here and they have matured and multiplied through the years. However, beginners can get lots of help and advice from staff. You need to overcome the expectation of wanting lush, green seedlings to take home. These plants are priced higher than those in big box stores, but they are worth it. They have been acclimated to the local conditions, outside of cozy greenhouses with built in sprinklers. They will settle well in your Rocky Mountain backyard. read more

10 stars for selling organic, non-neonic plants, -10 stars for customer service. The staff acts as if their jobs are only about keeping the plants alive. Customers who need a little help are treated as a bother. Most the staff are very rude. Many of their plants r in poor condition. When a beautiful nursery left Boulder I told my neighbor that I shop at Harlequins now. He tried it but was very disappointed in the plant quality. I can deal with that because of my gardening experience. I can nurse raggedy plants into beauties. What I can't deal with is the hostile staff. As much as I would love to support an organic grower, I am going to focus on starting my own seeds and trading plants with other gardeners. I've put up with Harlequins for years, but they just aren't worth the frustration for me. My advice, if you care about the birds and the bees, shop at an organic nursery!!! Even Harlequins. Do not shop at big box or nurseries who don't put in writing that they r neonic free. I will keep my eyes open for another, local, organic nursery. In the meanwhile, I will produce my own organic plants and not have to deal with the unkind people at Harlequins. read more

Harlequin's Gardens is an incredible gem of a gardening resource. This resource offers experts who will casually walk the aisles with you and share information on how to select plants and grow them and manage them. It is clear to me that the people are not only knowledgeable but passionate and happy to teach customers. The nursery also carries a wide selection of native and some non native plants in addition to plant starts, trees, shrubs and bushes, annuals and perennials. I also really enjoyed the chance to explore a xeriscape garden adjacent to the nursery to see and develop ideas from some examples of a xeriscape landscape and plants. The plants are labelled in the xeriscape garden, and there is a sign that suggests how many times per year it has been watered - surprisingly pretty few. Harlequin's will definitely be a go to resource for me going forward for our yard and garden. read more

This is not your average Home Depot nursery...It's hidden gem for anyone who likes plants. I just moved here, and am living in my own house with my own yard for the first time. So I know little to nothing about gardening and what to plant and when. But I do have priorities- I like things that are native, don't use lots of water, and organic whenever possible. This place is a family-owned nursery tucked away in North Boulder that embraces all of those values. And they are helpful! And patient! All the plants that they sell are either native or well-adapted to our climate, so you won't spend a fortune watering and fertilizing a garden that is doomed to fail. I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. These guys carry many Colorado native, non-hybridized plants that I couldn't find anywhere else in Denver or Fort Collins. They grow their plants themselves so they can guarantee that they aren't treated with insecticides (I'm creating a pollinator garden). And finally, I've called back several times by phone with questions about my plants, and each time their employees have been willing to spend time talking with me, and have been extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Harlequin's Gardens is the most delightful place ever. Could turn a non-gardener into a gardener....(me). Rows and rows of trees and plants that can thrive in our often-dry earth in our wacky weather. They even have recommendations for people who just about never remember to water their gardens. My name for it is zeroscape. Anyway, the people who are helping me with my new flagstone patio and some landscaping in my yard encouraged me to meet them here a few weeks ago, and I'm glad I did! The owners and people who work here are so knowledgeable and helpful and my yard looks bright and bountiful, and the plants stay alive even when I forget to water. This is a quaint little place with lots of plants. Staff was friendly. I was looking for tomatoes that would actually grow in slightly colder weather. They hooked me up. I already have three tomatoes coming in and lots more buds. I am very excited to try their roses next as well. I heard they don't graft their plants. It's a 1/4 to 1/2 mile dirt road, parking is tight. Lot's of potholes to get there. Just be warned. I would go back again just because it's a really neat place. I believe they also have honey and possibly beekeeping items, but I'm not positive. read more

I think Susan S. needs to remember why she came to this place and not let her personal beliefs cloud her judgment. Yes, the owners and staff could be described as hippies but this place is great because of it. Their emphasis is on native and water-conscious plants and their knowledge is vast. If you need some inspiration you can walk around in their beautiful gardens, or just ask a staff member for some suggestions. My wife and I were recently planning a xeriscape garden and came in with a design and they helped us every step of the way, tweaking the design and offering alternatives. I also took a xeriscape class earlier this summer that was led by one of the owners and he is a wealth of knowledge. We're looking forward to doing more business with Harlequin's. read more

This place was cool mainly because of their native plants selection. However, we got denied from attending the rain harvesting class today cause we didn't have cash even though the sign in the front says "we accept cards now." The guy said you can go to an ATM on broadway to get it well no thanks cause we'd end up missing the beginning of the class in order to pay. The reasoning was kind of silly in my opinion too. It was because they pay their instructors in cash. Well couldn't he just accept my card and then pay them cash anyways? I don't get it but whatever I still like the place for the native plants but I just wish they'd be more clear about these things or would've offered us to pay after the class or something. read more

this is a fun, fun, fun garden center. When I was there they had food, music, and lots of people to help you make good plant decisions. We drove from Denver to buy some trees here, it was worth the drive time as they had lots of advice about our yard in general. They have good soils like Ocean Forest, and make their own mulch too. read more

Harlequin's Holiday artisan market is a rich, heart-warming alternative to harried Christmas shopping! Admittedly, I'm one of the artists selling at the market, but I'm speaking here from a shopper's viewpoint. I buy most of my gifts here every year. It's like going to an open house at someone's home, with cheery friends, cookies, cider, goodies to taste, sweet music (sometimes live), and lovely, unique handmade gifts -- from art-wear and jewelry to natural lotions, beeswax candles, books, garden tools, handmade foods, pottery, gorgeous cards and other art, too numerous to name. The place is cozy and friendly, and shoppers often strike up conversations as they nibble and browse. How many holiday shopping venues actually help build community, and leave you feeling jolly? My wife and I visited for the first time in the beginning of June. We did not yet have some plants that we wanted in our garden. We were after mainly tomato plants and maybe a couple of herb plants. This place seemed very disorganized and it was very hard to find someone to help you. Still we found what we were looking for. They had a decent selection of tomato plants and we got three that we thought would be nice. We also during our visit decided to get a celery plant too. Sadly although my wife noticed that some plants were already infested with white flies we thought we got some that were not. To our surprise a couple of days later we found out that they were all infested. My wife battled to keep the tomato and celery plant alive while fighting off the infestation. We do everything in our power not to use chemicals at all so we both know how to use natural pest control. Still even after realizing we had brought home plants that were infested it was too late to have it completely under control. This infestation spread to our flowers and nearly killed them and spread to some other garden plants. We have spent 10 times more money than it cost us to buy the plants just trying to recoup all the damage. We now have seen this infestation take its toll even on indoor plants too. This place had to know they were so badly infested yet they continued to sell to the unknowing public these plants with white flies. Their larvae can sit dormant in a plants soil for months and when they start to grow they eat the plants roots first. You will just think what is happening to this plant and why is it slowly dying. Also of note is that we purchased two of what should have been the same tomato plant with the same ID tag on them but now that the tomato plants (we saved despite the infestation) are producing we can see we have one plant we can't identify because it is clearly not the same as the other. So one was marked wrong and we didn't get what we wanted and don't now know what kind we have. This place is badly managed and I recommend looking elsewhere for your natural planting needs. read more

I like the environmental values Harlequin's supports. I don't mind dealing with the occasional aphid or whatever I might find on their plants. Much prefer that than the overuse, in my opinion, of pesticides other nurseries engage in. The staff takes time to walk you through environmentally safe methods of ridding a plant of insects if that's needed. I also greatly appreciate their warranty on plants. I've never visited or called Harlequin that I haven't been helped by knowledgeable, thoughtful staff. Prices are fair. Native and drought tolerant plants perfect for Colorado are in abundance. Lots of Plant Select varieties too. I tried nearly every nursery in the Denver Metro Area before discovering Harlequin's. Now they are my one stop shopping destination for plants, soil, and organic fertilizer. read more
