Visited Hardware Coffee recently and was pleasantly surprised by the nice and airy ambiance. The cafe was quite busy when we visited, but there's plenty of seating including an upstairs area with additional chairs and tables. We initially had trouble finding somewhere to sit, but it worked out okay. Something to keep in mind is that larger tables are reserved for groups of 3 or more. Luckily, we were able to share a table with two others and spend a few hours working. Customer service was friendly and welcoming. During our visit, the staff we encountered were helpful and kind. I will say the food/drink menu had a good variety of coffees, teas, beer/wine, along with pastries and sandwiches/salads. I opted to order a turkey panini and a lemonade. The turkey panini was quite filling and came with a small side of greens. I enjoyed the panini more than expected, as the combination of toasted ciabatta, turkey, melted gruyere cheese and aioli was quite tasty. I was curious about some of the pastries, including a few croissants, but there were limited options by the time we visited. There's a florist available onsite too, if you're looking to purchase flowers. Overall, Hardware Coffee seems like a solid cafe and a good place to catch up with friends, enjoy a quick bite, or get some work done. Visited on a Saturday at 4pm with three family members. Cafe was very busy, pretty much every seat and table was take. We ordered our drinks and waited about 5minutes for a table to open up. Drinks: Decaf Cappuccino - good, nice velvety foam, strong espresso flavor with medium roasted profile and a medium bitterness, served fairly hot Drip Coffee- ordered for here and serving size is about a 12oz mug, pretty hot, quite bitter, definitely preferred this with a splash of milk to mute the bitterness Iced Chai Latte- good, strong spicy chai with a nice cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg note, balanced sweetness, really tasty Service was solid, order at the register and staff quickly poured our drip coffees. Other drinks were ready for pick up at the bar in about 2 minutes so fairly quick. Just a note if you visit later in the day they were sold out of hojicha and all pastries. Overall a cute new coffee shop in West Portal with lots of tables and seats but lots of people working so just be prepared for a bit of a wait for seats. Went during weekday morning, at 8:30AM, plenty of tables available. Gets busy with limited tables around 9:30AM. The pastries were quite large and priced well. Of course I got the bowtie pastry ($6) which is a croissant filled with raspberry. I do wished the raspberry was more even spread throughout the croissant. The latte ($6.50) was okay, standard, was not my favorite, the beans or espresso shot tasted bitter. The peach espresso tonic was unique, it had the peach flavor with compliments well with coffee. Wife and I stopped by the new Hardware coffee for an afternoon beverage. I got a drip coffee, she tried the chai latte and we shared a pastry. The coffee was tasty if a little pricey ($5). The remodeled interior was well lit with small tables and a counter next to an in store flower business. There was even a second floor with larger 6 person tables. My first reaction when the cafe opened was questioning the need for yet another coffee shop/cafe in our small business corridor. As I looked around and saw customers sitting at most, if not all the tables, I came to the conclusion that this local cafe is bringing a relaxed, spacious sit down vibe different from the existing options: many of which are chains (Peet's, Starbucks etc). This is the hottest new-to-me café & cowork spot in SF, and it's not too far of a commute for the win. I was the first of my group to arrive, and I wasn't really feeling more caffeine, so I opted to try some of their foods instead. I got a chia pudding (or possibly overnight oats) from the grab n go cooler and ordered a raspberry bowtie pastry. The staff heated up the pastry for me, so it was just right when I tried it after I snagged an empty chair someone had just vacated upstairs. While I'm not typically a fan of fruit pastries, I actually really dig the raspberry preserves filling in the bowtie pastry. As expected of any café with copious space and fast WiFi, Hardware fills up FAST. However, I didn't have to wait too long to secure a vacant seat and later a table for my group of three. Also worth noting that the A/C is turned up high, so it feels almost as cold inside as outside, making it more conducive for short visits rather than long stays. However, since it's pretty conveniently located for me anyway, I could definitely see myself coming here again. read more

In the age of robotics there is a place which has both the software and the hardware with the human touch . You find no robotic arms inside making coffee. You will see human machines dedicated to art of making real coffee for humans. It's located on West Portal and it's called Hardware. On a May stroll I landed on West Portal at the new Hardware location in San Francisco. The location I use to frequently visit was the one at Ghirardelli Square. This space is 10x bigger and also has a flower shop inside on a collaboration with Dasluz. You will also find the essential coffees and also along with matcha and some ice tea and lemonade. I got the iced mocha and it was not too sweet and tasty. It was refreshing as the sun was out on a San Francisco sunny day. They also have baked goods and flakey croissants like some in SF. They also have Pinot Noir by the glass for Don Juan Pinot Noir . Overall Hardware got a huge upgrade. On a hot day in the sun inside they have lemonade which was not " sour" like some in SF and the coffee at Hardware is made by human hands and not "robotic power"they have coffee made with beans and pastries made with "flour"and in the back they have a shop which sell roses along with purple and yellow "flower" Come to West Portal "Hardware "this new coffee shop location is 10x bigger and goes harder than the one at "Ghirardelli Square" I like both but I must "compare "because the West Portal location also has flower shop in the back which in a cafe is very "rare" read more

The cutest and best work-from-home café I've been to in the city! Hardware Coffee provides comfort, community, and chill vibes in the neighborhood. I came to Hardware Coffee with my coworker on a Wednesday afternoon, and wow, it was packed. That being said, we got lucky and snagged seats upstairs at the counter before moving to a table shortly after. This location is very close to the Muni, making it perfect for commuters. As for parking, street parking has a two-hour limit, so you'll either need to move your car or pay for parking if you plan to stay for a while. When you first walk in, you'll notice the spacious seating both downstairs and upstairs. This kind of real estate is pretty rare in the city, so it was refreshing to see a new option for people looking to work or study. They also offer a handful of pastries at the front. During my visit, I spotted a tomato pesto croissant (which I got and absolutely loved), a ham and cheese croissant, a lemon curd pastry, a kouign-amann, and more. Their menu is on the simpler side, so I wouldn't come here expecting unique or creative lattes. Instead, this is a place for well-executed classics. I ordered an Americano while my coworker got an iced latte. Both drinks were smooth and definitely helped wake us up. As you venture farther into the café, you'll find their flower selection, where you can request a custom bouquet to be made for you. Such a cute touch! The coffee menu is fairly standard but the Lattes are great. They serve some pastries but they look like they are brought in from another place. Hopefully, they can add more unique drinks over time. Boy! Whatever happened to the Papenhausen Hardware Store few businesses near the West Portal Station? I used to come inside to go window shopping few times already and planned on what I like to purchase... until it's closed down much later. This year, its interior had been remodeled and renamed as Hardware Coffee. Spacey and laid back, its wooden interior atmosphere had two floors in one; the 2nd floor had few additional seating areas. Even though they ran out of chai and matcha when I first came here that other evening, anything I purchased was a grab and go so I could hang out. I'm surprised there's someone in Hardware Coffee I know, my next-door neighbor. I might come to visit once again for a cup of tea latte and chat sometimes. read more

However upon entering, it took me by surprise at how much it has transformed into a beautiful upmarket relaxing coffee place, which could easily be mistaken for a fancy restaurant. The current food menu is a soft menu, so likely more food items may be added The U shape upstairs has great views of the bar and seating area. At the moment it's closed till further notice. This is not just a coffee shop. It combines a small florist, a wine bar, with Hardware merchandise items for sale as well as pastries, sandwiches and salads. Baked goods are delivered from outside and usually sells out. They also have workshops called "SIP & Arrange" . Such a cool idea to optimize the space. The next workshop is coming up soon, on June 4th. Overall, Service was quick and efficient. Coffees were smooth and nicely made. The Kouign Amann was Krispy and caramalized - delicious. It's a really cute coffee shop in West portal. I really enjoyed the raspberry bow pastry but I was a little disappointed in my strawberry slushy. It was very watery and wasn't as fresh. However, I love the vibe of the place and they have a lot of fresh flowers that we can buy from. Also, I love how locals would come in -- there was a group that was doing watercolor painting, some were working and some was just hanging out with friends.
