I used Hapwards all through youth tennis and HS. 1966-74... Wooden racquets, We worked with them for free replacements, they were amazing. We used gut strings they supplied at reduced cost for HS tennis teams.... Always worth the ride... We all used the soft tie classy raquet cover (critical for gut strings). Just terrific. A vestige of a bygone age. Incredibly, the store is located in the driveway of a residential house on a quiet, leafy street. (Almost certainly grandfathered in.) Anyway, it's an old-time tennis shop staffed by relatives of the man who founded the place in 1913. Good, high-end racquet selection; good accessories; even has some sneakers and clothes. Super-friendly staff is very accommodating and even generous with pricing and the occasional freebie. I feel good about patronizing this place. I visited the shop with the intention of having my racquet re-strung. I'm new to tennis, but it felt like the time to have this done. Instead, I was told my strings were fine. I really appreciate this example of honesty over a narrow focus on earning money. I ended up buying a new racquet to have as a spare, and the employee gave me a great deal. Hayward's has been around forever. My Dad, George Butler, always went here. He played for East Orange HS and was a state champion in the late '30s. After WWII, my sisters and I came along, and I was the only one that shared his passion. He took me to Hapward's for my first racquet that is more closely a wooden racket ball racquet, which I also used to teach my sons. From there I wanted to emulate him and bought a Davis TAD, which I also still have, hanging in my office. My Da's on one wall and mine on the other. We had great debates about metal when I switched to the Wilson T2000, (also purchased from Hapward's) and then the three Arthur Ashe versions. Sadly my Dad passed at the early age of 71, but the memories of our love of the game and visits to Hapward's live on with me. The best service and insights possible will come from Hapward's, well beyonf\d what you can just read on the internet. My favorite 20+year old Prince broke. I had no choice than to get a new racket. After researching real tennis shops, not mega retail sports shops I decided to go to Hapwards. Like the movie said, I chose wisely. They were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Recommended a Wilson that would best match my skills and had it ready in 24 hrs. Awesome tennis shop with a great assortment of frames, strings, accessories, and any other tennis needs. They always have the newest models of all the big brands - Babolat, Wilson, Prince, Head. I've never asked to see any smaller brands such as Yonex, Dunlop, or Tecnifibre, but I'm pretty sure I've at least seen a Dunlop. Prices are great, especially on older frames on clearance as well as old demo rackets. Speaking of demos, they are very generous with their demo period; it is free and you can keep it out for a long time. Out of respect for other patrons, it is suggested to keep it for two weeks MAX (one week is generally sufficient). Fred, the guy who usually works there, is really helpful and nice. read more

I usually do restaurant reviews, but I have to give this place my first 5. Founded in 1913 as a tennis shop, still continues to be a tennis shop. Fred is a great, knowledgeable tennis fanatic. He knows the trends, he's humble and super nice. He can talk on and on about tennis. Just go here and try some demos, come visit this hidden shop. Get to talk about how they built a house in front of the store a hundred year ago. Fred also has the biggest patience ever. Highly competitive prices...some frames are even as low as some of the ebay ones. Gotta give this place a try. read more

My daughter joined her high school tennis team and she needed an upgrade from her beginners racquet. We went to Hapward's and I'm glad we did. The gentleman there spoke with my daughter, asked her the questions and proceeded to show us some choices explaining the differences and advantages to each. We bought a racquet from him and he gave us a discount because she is a student. I'm sorry I didn't get his name so I could acknowledge him directly but he helped me wrap the handles of my 2 racquets last year and wouldn't take a few dollars extra for his help. On the way home my daughter said she really liked the fact that he made eye contact with her and spoke directly to her rather that just talking to the parent. This man knows his stuff and I feel comfortable with our purchase. EXCELLENT customer service! I highly recommend Hapward's!!! read more

Best tennis shop around period. They definitely know what they are talking about here, which is important as i am completely lacking in knowledge of equipment.. Definitely more knowledge in this shop than any of the others including the city. Also if you want something they probably have it compared to others, very well stocked. Just left the place and had to leave a positive review. I've been trying to demo a particular racket and they came through in the clutch! Very lax on the demo program. The store is a hidden gem. I thought my navigation system was taking me to the wrong place cause the store is hidden among residential houses. Look for the sign on the front lawn and parking is in the rear. You need to ring a door bell to get let inside. Rich was very helpful and I did not feel rushed out the store. Wish I could have stayed longer, but the wife called and ruined my adventure lol. Can't wait to go back after I'm done with my demo. So glad I finally found a real shop outside the city that I can support. So tired of the crappy service at Sports Authority and Dick's Sporting goods etc. Knowledge and experience is key in this sport and this place definitely has it. Very knowledgable, trustworthy, they have a lot of good stuff and seem very dependable. Fred is a character - quirky, witty and friendly. They strung my racket in less than 1 day and also threw in a little freebie because I randomly gave some smart phone tips. Just a good feeling there - I will definitely be back - so much nicer than going to a big sports warehouse type place. And, for smaller women, they seem to have a lot of quality wear in S and XS sizes - lots of variety too. read more
