This place is wonderful! You walk in and they cheer at you. They have a tiny dining room with just 4 tables. The wait staff was so friendly. They gave us a decorative pair of chop sticks to take home. The chef came over and asked us how our food was. We had the French kiss, caterpillar, and the spicy crunch roll. The Yelp reviews were so amazing that I decided to go here one night... and it was closed. Then another night I was craving sushi... and it was closed. Finally, on my third try, it was open! The service was very friendly and quick and I loved that it is clearly a local establishment. I sat down and, no exaggeration, had my meal within 2 minutes. Of SITTING DOWN! I ordered a seaweed salad and a spicy tuna roll and the portions were, as expected from reviews, very generous. The seaweed salad was solid, no complaints there. The spicy tuna roll was good -- there was probably twice as much tuna as one could usually expect from a sushi roll. This was very generous and made the meal great value, but it also didn't seem like the best ratio of fish to rice, seaweed, and other fillers (for me personally) and also made the roll fall apart super easily. It was hard to eat and I opted to portion my own bites from the different sushi components scattered on my plate. Also, they did not take my American Express credit card (I was prepared for that.) Let me begin this review by stating that Happy Sushi is by no means a 5-star worthy sushi restaurant. That being said, Happy Sushi is definitely a 5-star Springfield restaurant. As far as food goes in this town, you are mainly limited to your common chains, sub-par Italian joints, and greasy pubs. Happy Sushi is a welcome oasis in the midst of restaurant mediocrity. Let me start with the ambiance and staff. Happy Sushi is tucked away in a small, somewhat deserted strip mall. There isn't much you notice as ambiance goes, so the first thing you notice is the establishment's proprietor, Hiro, smiling at you from behind the sushi bar. Hiro is the heart and soul of Happy Sushi. After having eaten at the restaurant, I look back and find that I am happy there isn't anything to distract me from watching a master take so much joy in executing his craft. Now with the food. The fish is average, but probably the best you will find in the heart of the Midwest - it really isn't fair to compare the quality to that of the West and East coasts when you're in Springfield, IL. I ordered the Hawaiian Roll and the Spicy Crunch roll. The portion size is gigantic compared to most sushi restaurants, especially for the modest price of Happy Sushi. Two rolls was way more than I needed. Hiro puts a nice garnish on the plate that really adds to the presentation. I recommend going with normal rolls, not speciality rolls - the specialty rolls are too big and too complex in my opinion. I recommend going with your normal spicy tuna, tuna + avocado, or eel rolls. All in all, good restaurant with good food (for Springfield) and a very welcoming environment (Hiro). read more

Yelp directed me to Happy Sushi, and on the basis of the location and the single 5-star review this seemed like my place. As an out-of-towner I shouldn't judge but the neighborhood seems kind of sketchy. But the guy behind the counter is a gem! He handed me a spicy tune roll to nosh on while I perused the menu. And in fact after a bit of conversation he made a few suggestions that were PERFECT! Everything is hand made right in front of your eyes. He's quick. He's chatty. The TV is a little distracting but I wasn't dining in and he needs something to listen to when it's slow, right? I wouldn't say things are cheap - three rolls + miso and I walked away $34 lighter in the pocket. Got to the hotel and what luck! BF was super happy with the sushi :) really awesome rolls, great presentation (in a styrofoam flip-lid box no less!) and terrific flavors. Though he could be a little more generous with the soy sauce methinks. We stopped back by for carry-out lunch the next day. There was one other client in - Happy Sushi wants your business! Again he had suggestions, again he sent me away with an extra roll, again it cost me nearly $40 for three rolls. We had a deep fried roll this time that ended up being not so awesome but hey, you win some, you lose some when you're willing to try new things, right? I contemplated whether I should leave a review for this place or not. And then I contemplated between a 2 star and 3 star. I've so badly wanted to love the place because the owner/chef is such a sweet old man. I found out about the place on Yelp while visiting Springfield for work. So, I went inside and there's Hiro-- the man I read about on Yelp who's known for his happy personality. Fellow yelpers were right. I ordered a spicy salmon and a french kiss roll. Hiro was very sweet and gave me a spicy salmon hand roll to 'test out the spicy-ness." I absolutely loved it. After about 20 minutes (I didn't mind because I wasn't in a rush), I got my take-out and sprinted back to my car. I left Happy Sushi in such a great mood because of Hiro. Back at my hotel room, I admired the presentation and the decor in the to-go box. I was blinded by my experience to notice that the rolls were poorly rolled (very loose and falling apart). The French Kiss roll was drowning in sauces (not my style; disappointing for $14 roll). It was after two bites of each roll that I smelled something funky. I sniffed around the entire box and concluded that it was the spicy mayo that drenched the French Kiss roll. It had gone bad. I mean, bad! It smelled awful. I immediately lost my appetite and threw out the rest of the meal. Still, I don't hate the place.. 2 stars for the French Kiss experience and 3rd star for Hiro and his generosity. read more

One of the best sushi places I've been too! I'm not from Springfield, but whenever my husband and I go back to visit his parents, we make sure to stop in. Hiro (I think that's how you spell it) is always so friendly and he clearly has a good rapport with his local customers. Last time we were in, we had each had miso soup, plus we split a heart attack, a spicy tuna roll, a spider roll, a vegas roll and two pieces of albacore tuna. All were excellent and the fish was very fresh--surprising for a landlocked city with no close airports! I don't know how he does it! The presentation is always beautiful too. My favorite was the spider roll, but the heart attack was a close first. All the rest obvs tied for second :). I tried to go here for lunch when I was in town in mid-November, but alas, they were closed for a vacation I believe. It was worth the wait, and I can't wait to go back again to try other things. I ordered the sashimi plate, which came with miso and a salad. The sashimi was as fresh as I've ever had anywhere and beautifully presented. This place is absolutely wonderful. It CAN get a bit expensive, if you prefer specialty rolls to simple ones or get a lot of individual pieces, but the sushi here is so good I think it's worth the price. There is very little indoor seating, however, so be aware that it may be pretty crowded if you intend to dine in. I've been here 3 times now and it's been delicious every single time. The gentleman making the sushi is so friendly and exuberant, I get the impression he really loves what he does, or at least he puts on an amazing show of it! He only ever has one or two other people helping him out, but they have always been very friendly and helpful every time I've visited. They have a lot of amazing rolls on the menu but the fish here is so good I'm pretty happy with just getting spicy tuna rolls and individual sushi pieces. It's also lovely to have found a place in Springfield where you can get albacore! That's my favorite fish and it's been hard to find since moving away from the coast. My favorite specialty roll is the Red Dragon roll, I could eat them all day long. My first visit here was on my birthday, also, and if you tell them it's your birthday he will make you something very special! If you like sushi, definitely give this place a try. read more

Who would have thought one would find such a fine quality sushi joint in land locked Springfield? I've had perhaps a bit more memorable sushi experiences in Chicago, west coast, and of course in east Asia, but Happy Sushi was a happy surprise. The adorable chef was very generous with his creations as well as meticulous. Every presentation was beautiful and equally delicious. He even came over behind the counter to greet his sit in customers directly, and I had the pleasure of speaking to him in his native tongue. I will definitely re-visit when I'm in town again. Basically the fish was really fresh the people super nice! Got a free roll! However... The rolls fell apart as soon as you picked it up. And there was too much rice. When inquired about why we didn't eat everything and why the fish was out of the roll we said the truth. He told us that people around this area want more bank for their buck so he puts a ton of rice and as much fish as he can. It's pretty good but I guess I'm a purist. I was driving around looking for a meal with my girlfriend and i looked and seen this little place. I asked her if she could pull it up on yelp and see it was 4.5 stars so I had to see about it. Came in greeted friendly came to the back (behind kitchen) and i was at a lost for words at the different rolls, sushi, and overall assortment (first time with authentic food) so I went with the heart attack, 2 squid, 2 salmon (sushi) and beef udon. I added some soy sauce (I like a little more flavor in my soup) and I have to say. My new favorite place. And if you're wondering my girlfriend went with chicken ramen (she loves the stuff) and she was shocked by how good it looked and tasted and said we have to come back. We did get a decent amount of food for the price. And overall it was the bomb. It should most definitely be a 5 star read more

I admit that I'm a bit confused at the review(s) that mention this place being closed. I was there Thursday (6/23/13) and while small, it was definitely open. This place servers some really tasty and beautiful food. The atmosphere is certainly not fancy, but the food, the prep and the service goes a long way to make up for that. There appears to be something that is "special" each day, and the serving sizes are above what I am used to receiving. A single roll is definitely a meal, and they have a very appealing presentation. From the outside it seems to be a run-of-mill sushi place in a strip mall, but as soon as we walked in the owner (I presume) jumped up and greeted us. I ordered the chicken fried rice which was much fancier than I expected when ordering. It was a bit sweet for my taste, but a bit of soy sauce balanced that out.
