I've been to my fair share of Chinese buffets through the years, and this was one of the worst. The restaurant is dated and the options on the buffet were super limited. There was nothing there that stood out as really good. The chicken was awful on all dishes I tried. The hour and sour soup tasted like straight vinegar. After visiting the Ark encounter, we were looking for a place place for dinner. Happy Dragon is less than 10 minutes from the ark. The Chinese buffet choices were excellent. The catfish was very tender as were the chicken and meat dishes. A favorite was the Stir-fried green beans - SO delicious! There are selections of fruits and desserts, including self-serve ice cream! I also enjoyed the hot and sour soup, wonton soup, noodles and fried rice. Happy Dragon is a small restaurant with basic decor. The Servers and hostess are welcoming, and provide good service. Extra star for staff friendliness. I have been here three times and it's fine. The wontons and skewers as well as the bourbon chicken are my favorite. I haven't tried the seafood (because it is always gone) so I imagine it's good. The desserts have plenty of variety. The mini Bundt cakes are my favorite. Though I am not partial to the "self-serve" scooped ice cream. The scoops are put back into room temperature water and anyone can reach into the freezer without gloves/sneeze guard. I have a theory that people get used to a certain Chinese restaurant, and they'll never be totally satisfied with food from others. This just didn't taste like the flavors I've grown to crave at my hometown Chinese restaurant. The place was clean enough but certainly not fancy. In an effort to be vigilant about removing dirty plates from the table and providing refills, the waitress hovered by our table apart the entire meal, which made me sort of self-conscious. I pass by this location on a regular basis and have always wanted to try it. On 08/11/22 I had that opportunity. First thoughts; it's a little shady. The exterior accounts for this. The food was acceptable however it is not anything to rave about. Some of the items had flavor and some did not. For the price we paid, $29.65 for two people, we expected quite a bit more. I am so confused by the good reviews... but I guess you don't know if it's the place for you unless you try jt! The food tasted so stale to the point I needed to spit out quite a few things if it tasted bad enough. I was sad there was no orange chicken. The lo mein is usually one of my favorites but I couldn't eat this one- it tasted so old despite just coming out of the kitchen. The cheesy seafood was alright. Egg drop soup was really good other than the eggshell that I had to spit out. I probably mostly ate the rangoons and some were a bit tough to bite around the edges, but the fresh ones were really yummy. My husband was really suspicious of the chicken on a stick... it was bright red but totally tasteless. There was a pan of water with shrimp that had black spots all over them (NOT the veins) and not even on ice- just water, maybe the ice melted and they never changed it out- and next to fruit and jello that also tasted weird. The ice cream scoops sat in lukewarm dirty water bins and my toddler spat out ice cream with maybe a rancid pecan and constantly wiped off her tongue- a toddler spitting out ice cream?! You know it must be bad... Service was not the best. The waitress was helpful but did not seem very enthusiastic. We had to keep piling up dirty dishes and I shared half my water with my son because his was never refilled. The music and A/C didn't seem to be on in the back where we were seated (?) which made dining a bit uncomfortable. The building really needs some repair, there was black spots on the ceiling and furniture holding supplies looked like it was falling apart. Our fortune cookies were fun! And I don't think any of us got food poisoning, so that's a huge plus for a Chinese buffet. I felt regretful spending about $50 here for our family of 5, but they do seem to be trying and they need the funds/business to help better their establishment. I have been going to this place for years now. I don't go as often as I would like to but always enjoy it when I do. They have an excellent buffet with great food, friendly atmosphere and good service. Or sometimes, we'll order takeout and pickup at the drive through window. Usually, we'll get enough to have a meal and have enough leftovers to snack on later.
