It is as good as it gets for the price, indeed. This little hole in the wall is one fabulous restaurant! Every time I order there I am pleased all over again with the price and the quality. Today I got the Hunan Chicken and it's just wonderful -- just a hint of smokiness to the sauce, perfect almost-sweetness (just a shade sweeter than Szechuan) -- YUM! I love their red curry with tofu, the curry fried rice, the ribs are DELISH! and the thai hot-sour could make you cry. Delivery is fast and friendly, too. FYI, they are strict on the no substitutions policy for lunch menu but will switch out the dreaded styrofoam poison containers for paper if you pay $.50. read more

Their boba tea or fruit smoothies are HORRIBLE, the tapioca is never cooked properly! They are to hard or over cooked. Secondly, I had ordered the kiwi pineapple smoothie ( which was given to me wrong) and found a tooth like bone in the smoothie!! PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE!! I have been going to this place for awhile, but as of today, I'm going to stop. On June 26, 2014 they must have had a big order. It appears the cook was frying a ton of chicken to make Orange Chicken. He already had several tubs and tub he was preparing was full and he kept filling it up. I observed some of the chicken fall to the floor, then the cook picked the chicken up off the floor and threw it right in the tub with the other chicken. Wow! was I flabbergasted. I couldn't believe what I just witnessed. Needless to say it was hard for me to stomach my order of "orange chicken" after watching him have a total disregard toward picking up chicken off the floor to prepare for a large order from an unknowing customer who is spending a lot of money with your restaurant. You don't know what roams the floor at night and this was very unsanitary. I wasn't supposed to see this because they have a curtain hiding the kitchen but it was opened a little bit. Ordered through Grub Hub, they delivered 10 minutes earlier than the receipt said which is nice. I ordered a Pad Thai dinner for myself and the orange chicken dinner special for my boyfriend. The pad thai was okay, something was missing but it was still good. I also ordered crab Rangoon, I was hesitant because of some of the reviews I read, but I liked it. The cream cheese was smooth and there wasn't an excess of onions. Egg rolls were delicious as well. read more

I have searched high and low for a good chinese food place near forest park and stumbled across this place. The food was great. I placed an order for delivery adn it got there so quick i was amazed. Not to mention the food was delicious and so cheap. For 15 bucks i had enough food for 3 days. I will definately be ordering from there again. read more

I tried to leave a review on the Happy Chef-online ordering site and it would not post it. Nuff said. Overall the food was horrible and being a manager of a restaurant, I am very lenient in giving negative reviews as restaurants have a poor night etc. However, what we received was not an indication of a poor night, but instead of a poor restaurant. I ordered $45 in food (7 items) from apps (spice wings, egg rolls, pot stickers, shu mai) to entrees (shrimp egg fu young, vegetable lo-mein, and vegetable fried rice). Other than the veg fried rice, we literally threw everything away in the garbage, the food quality was horrible. I am only posting here after trying to reach the restaurant to no avail. I get businesses having a bad night. But for neither the restaurant nor the online service to contact me after leaving the similar review makes me bring it to the public. As a restaurant manager, I personally handle all Reviews (both positive and negative ) as they occur, and strive to correct / rectify the diners experience to prevent them from such a posting. Why bother having Thai food when u can't even get the staple Thai dish, Pad Thai, right? I don't even know what I got, it was NOT Pad Thai. It was ORANGE for goodness' sake!!! The Thai iced tea was also dismal. If you r familiar with Thai food at all, then you would know just how awful the Thai dishes are. Even the Chinese fried rice was horrendous. So greasy and salty, I had a terrible stomach ache afterwards. I only went here because of its proximity to my work place... But never again. I don't get the bad reviews about this place. Firstly, the customer service is really stellar here. They are a friendly bunch of people. I ordered the beef short ribs with black pepper sauce, pot stickers, egg rolls, salt and pepper chicken, salt and pepper smelt, and beef fried rice. The beef short ribs with black pepper sauce is my favorite dish from them. The ribs are so tasty and tender and the black pepper sauce is out of this world. They do make a pretty mean pepper steak btw. The pot stickers were so delicious and moist and full of filling. These are my favorite pot stickers from any place I've been too. They have that nice crispy browning on the outside. The egg rolls are pretty good although they can be hit or miss. Sometimes they can taste pretty old. The salt and pepper chicken is a dry dish. It's deep fried chicken with the salt and pepper seasoning. Really really tasty but again be warned it's pretty dry. I also liked the beef fried rice. The bf loves the salt and pepper smelt. All in all a pretty solid choice. You can't go wrong here. read more

Tried for some delivery hoping it was gonna to be a new Chinese go to place but It really was not very good. Mongolian beef tasted dry and sour and the bottom of the container was all oily sauce. Sesame chicken was over breaded and dry with bland sauce (also tasted more like sweet and sour). I threw out the left overs, which I never do with Chinese. Egg rolls and wonton soup were just run of the mill , but not as bad as the entrées. Sorry but GoGo China and Hunan Spring are better. Excellent take-out chinese food and great prices. Portions are huge. We are huge fans of the salt and pepper tofu, even though it is not consistent (sometimes very crispy, sometimes not, but always really tasty). Save yourself $3 and order the appetizer version -it's nearly the same size as the entree! I am also in love with their broccoli fried rice. Best I've ever had. Really good food for good prices, and management is super helpful and understanding! I recently ordered online and meant to get vegetable egg rolls for delivery, but accidentally clicked regular ones instead. I was disappointed when I realized the error (am strict vegetarian) and they were still willing to exchange the egg rolls for no charge even though it was my mistake! I really appreciated that and will continue to be a fan of Happy Chef. :) read more

Happy Chef is my favorite, go to place to eat in Forest Park. Whenever I order they will uaually estimate that it'll take 45/60 minutes, which is pretty standard. Then within 25 minutes the food is already at my house. The food is great, portions are huge and they are always consistant. I would recommend this place to all of my friends. read more

I have been ordering from here since they arrived at the Harlem and Roosevelt location. I think the food is flavorful and the many options are great. The price is very reasonable with good portions and the delivery is awesome. This is one of those places that just make you happy. I have never had a bad meal from Happy Chef. There have been a couple of times where the meal was mah, but those times have been more than made up for by the times that it has been amazing. I tried Happy Chef for a week day lunch. They have a very generous lunch menu, and everything on there is around $5 with tax. I dined in, and was pleasantly surprised by the high stacked plate of food that was brought out, steaming hot. I highly recommend this place for a good lunch. read more

The chicken in the satay was drier than week old french bread, and the peanut sauce tasted more like cafeteria gravy. doesn't come with cucumber salad, either, which is kind of a standard thing at most places. The entrees were plentiful, but decidedly mediocre. Pineapple fried rice hardly had any pineapple in it, and the noodles in the Pad See Eiw were rubbery and flavorless. My wife wanted to try the plum soda, which turned out to be chunks of plum in soda water. The free potstickers were probably the tastiest of the meal, but that doesn't exactly say much. read more

we used to eat here all the time via grub Hub and have been happy for the food we received. recently we got a HORRIBLE dinner for 2 and when we called to have them correct the order they refused. here is what the issue was Shrimp toast was burnt and cooked in old oil that was not to temp (you can tell them by how much oil was in it ) Egg Roll was over cooked and cooked in the same stale oil that was not to temp. Shrimp Pad Thai : now this was the worst. it was RED yep that is what i wrote. Pad Thai was cooked the sauce that they use for the Sweet and Sour Sauce and was NOT appetizing or edible. the Orange chicken which was asked to be cooked HOT (spicy) had no spice to it. when i called their only recommendation was to get a credit for the shrimp toast they would not even cook something else or refund the total amount so now i have to have my bank refund the amount that i spent. i find it to be theft when you charge some one for something that they an not enjoy, use or consume to be theft and fraud. they new their food was bad and keep money how is this fair? read more

If I could give this negatives I would. I ordered delivery and due to COVID and family being high risk I requested my food be left at door. When the driver arrived at my apt he called and told me to come out I nicely asked for him to leave it at door since it was already paid for. He was very rude and screamed over the phone to come out. When I came out he was across the street at the wrong house so I waved him down to come hand it to me. He ignored me for about 5 minutes until I walked up and gave him my name and told him that the food was for me. He stood there screaming at me telling me I had put the wrong address down and was very confrontational. Being a girl and being home along since my bf had not gotten home from work yet I felt very frightened and nervous because he was so confrontational, I had to tell him "are you giving me my food? Or should I call the cops?" He then handed me my food and stood outside my apt until I went inside. NEVER again will I order from here. HORRIBLE service and the food was cold and dry. If you're a girl please be careful when ordering from here especially if you live alone or are home alone. read more

This is my go to place for Chinese takeout. I love their orange chicken, lo mein, kung pao and Mongolian beef. It is very inexpensive - lunch menu especially, convenient and very fast service. Interior might need a little updating, but otherwise no complaints whatsoever. read more

This joint is in the same space as an excellent longtime Lincolnwood Chinese Restaurant called Bamboo House, and the number was the same, but that was it. Happy Chef has saved me. 2 years ago I moved from Chicago (which has such a variety of asian offerings) to Forest Park, where all the noodle dishes come with thick spaghetti noodles and not the thin pan-fried noodles. Happy Chef is the first place I've found in the area with the thing pan-fried noodles! The noodles are quite oily but delicious. Other dishes I've had are generally pretty good, such as the shrimp chow mein, orange chicken, general tso's chicken (which is not spicy), and crab rangoon. The sweet n sour sauce that comes with the crab rangoon is possibly one of the best I've ever had, although the crab rangoon itself is not. The first time I ordered I got the free fried rice, but was disappointed because it was dry and tasteless and I threw most of it away. But now I get the free potstickers and they are pretty good and filling. Also I once got the Panang Curry off the Thai menu, and was disappointed that it wasn't spicy at all! Also the tofu wasn't pre-fried. They didn't even ask me if I wanted it mild or spicy, their fault. Despite some bad dishes, Happy Chef has become my "go-to" place for chinese take-out. They have fast delivery and everything is reasonably priced. Plus the pan-fried noodles! Yum! read more

Do not order the honey chicken. Unless you like pure mayonnaise sauce with not even a hint of honey. The fried rice had a funny taste. The pot stickers were pretty good. The shrimp with lobster sauce was better than average. I just don't understand the mayonnaise sauce. Where does that fit into Chinese/Thai cuisine?? Big time let down that ended up in the garbage.
