The main dining room in the back had a large clear glass viewing window through which we could see the chef & the parilla (barbecue grill). We both ordered the lomo vetado cooked medium. It was cooked & seasoned perfectly with a wonderful smoky flavor. Excellent cut & quality meat. Really delicious! We also ordered a salad to share as a side dish. For dessert we had the flan which was served with a bit of manjar/dulce de leche on the side. The flan was fairly light and creamy & the manjar was very good. Before ordering dessert, we were advised by the server that they were out of the mote con huesillo -- in Chile they usually wait until after you order to tell you they don't have it, so this is really good service for Chile!! They offered a complimentary mint liqueur dessert which looked delicious (we saw them bringing it to other tables) but we passed on it. A complimentary drink is also rare in Chile & indicative of better than normal Chilean customer service! Great food, great service! I will definitely be back!

Alas, we decided to go to Ox at the last minute on a Saturday night, and all the al fresco tables were already booked, but there were plenty of tables inside. We ordered a round of pisco sours to start - delicious and refreshing. A plate of warm bread soon followed. For starters, I ordered the blue cheese salad, which turned out to be enormous, but I found it to be long on iceberg lettuce and short on toppings. Definitely enough for two people to share - wish I'd known that. For dinner I got the bone-in ribeye steak. It was one of the most beautiful steaks I've ever seen - check out the picture. It was served with a couple different kinds of salt, which I'd recommend skipping, because the steak had plenty of flavor to stand on its own. Although the steak was done just right, unfortunately about a third of it was gristle and fat. I don't mind some fat on a ribeye, but in this case it was excessive. The restaurant has a nice wine list. We ordered a bottle of Chilean red, which was beautifully presented and a great complement to the steaks. As a joke, our waitstaff brought over an oversize bottle of wine to place on our table and offered to take our pictures. I guess it was pretty obvious we were tourists. I had to argue with the waiter that an avocado salad and sliced avocado are two very different things. I finally got a salad that tasted nice.

Not only does this wine bar have the most extensive by-the-glass list I found anywhere in Santiago, they are also one of only two wine bars that keeps all of their wines in a temperature controlled area (very important--as most places don't have AC in Chile). All of the food I had was great--but my top favorites were the applewood smoked salmon, the loco plate, and the short ribs. I really enjoyed being able to try new wines from small, boutique producers in Chile (this is something you can only do in a few places in Santiago) and get recommendations from the really knowledgeable owner as well as the fact that they include a little tag on each glass so that you can keep track of what each wine in front of you is, if you do a flight of half glasses of wine like I did. The two best places for wines-by-the-glass and the best selection of wines from smaller producers are Bocanariz and Barrica94. No wine lover should leave Santiago without visiting both of these places.
