Solid local diner not too far from our hotel near the Houston Airport (IAH). My husband had the South of the Border skillet and I had a chorizo omelet. We enjoyed both. I opted for grits instead of potatoes with my omelet. They served a bowl, not a cup grits, which I could not finish. The grits were really good. The service was great and coffee refills plentiful. The ambience was typical of a a clean, well run family diner. Bathrooms were clean and the restaurant was clean and orderly. We would come back if ever in the area. Hanz Down one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had. French toast for bread w/ over hard egg, cheese & turkey sausage. A side of syrup & sprinkle of powdered sugar joined the sandwich. It was very delicious & cooked well & nice & hot. The fruit festival waffle was large w/ tons of fruit & whipped cream. My wife inhaled it but left me a few bites since it was so huge. Only 10.50 & sandwich was 8.50. Its seat yourself, the servers were very friendly & food came out very fast. 3 different ladies checked on us while we were there which was only 20 mins. When you walk in you feel like you're at home. The ambiance is homely, quiet and the restaurant was clean and inviting. The service was great. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and told me information about the inception of how Hanz came to be. The food was tasty and felt like my grandmother's breakfast on Saturday mornings. The bacon was cooked just right not to crispy and not rubbery , the sausage patty was cooked all the way through without being cooked too hard, the scrambled eggs were cooked soft like I asked, the grits just like home and the waffle and syrup were the perfect combination. The only thing I would have looked different was the hash browns cooked a little harder. One of the few places on the north that actually serves "wings" for the chicken n waffles. Not a lavish spot, been here for years but they come through with the flavor, variety and availability. As popular as chicken n waffles have become I'm surprised more places don't offer it. However everything is made fresh (that I've ordered). I like how there are options to customize your waffle. I opted for the banana nut waffle which came with whip cream. They actually cook the waffle with the pecans in it - so delish. Plus you get nice size portions of wings too - I never can finish it all. I have never dined in; I always get my food to go, but it seems popular with the nearby locals. The waitress was very nice and attentive. the food was okay overall and a little subpar for the price (also disclosure I M comparing to diners in NJ that I have experience with) - grilled chicken sandwich: bread was thin and like the one that comes with McDonald meals and was similarly smushed despite not being wrapped fries were mediocre. -pancakes: 2 decently sized fluffy pancakes. Very flavorful and we like our food on the spicy side so the waitress brought a very flavorful hot sauce. Service was excellent we visited around 8:30 on a weekday morning. We were seated right away and our waitress brought menus, water and coffee directly. She was very friendly and was very attentive to our needs. The restaurant is located in a working class business district and may have originally been a Denny's or other chain restaurant. Plenty of table and booth seating. Capacity might be 50-60 people. I had the south of the border skillet which comes with chorizo, eggs, country skillet potatoes, grilled peppers and onions, pico, cheese, sour cream, avocado, and your choice of tortillas, toast, or a biscuit! The skillet was cooked to perfection and I enjoyed every bite! My dad had the pork chops and eggs plate. It came with two pork chops, 2 eggs (cooked to your liking), 1/2 grits, 1/2 hash browns, and your choice of toast or a biscuit. It was Father's Day so I told my dad to order whatever he like so of course he ordered his favorite! Pancakes topped with strawberries. I managed to get a bite before he demolished them and it was so good. The strawberries were fresh and the pancakes were top tier! The only reason I would have to rate Hanz a four was for the burnt shrimp that was served to my mom. They did manage to replace the shrimp but due to the long wait she had already finished her meal before receiving them. I came here with a craving of French toast on my taste buds. They are not hard to find, but the traffic is hectic connecting back to the feeder road. If you are not familiar with Hanz, you would not stop based on how the exterior of the building looks. I pulled up, parked, looked around my surroundings, and then I went in. Yep, all by myself. Inside joke for the ones who know me. LOL- It is nice and quiet inside when you first walk in. Then there is a high pitched voice zuming towards the front door, "Welcome to Hanz, sit wherever you like". So I did just that. They have tables and booths available. The inside is really spacious. I do not have a comment on the restroom. I was greeted quickly by Chris my waitress. She is great! She made me feel right at home. They offer free Wi-Fi, just ask for the code. I sat at a booth towards the back of the building. Out of traffic. Plus it was the best view of everything going on. As I looked on- everyone appeared to be enjoying their food. By that time Chris was back with my coffee and water. I ordered the Frech Toast combo. You get six big peices of French Toast, eggs, and bacon or sausage. All for less than ten dollars. It was exactly what I needed to satisfy my taste buds. It was good. I even had enough left over for another meal. Hanz taste way better than Denny's, and IHOP... Huge fan, huge! It's the chicken and waffles for me. I've only ever ordered via delivery app and the waffles is always leaning to one side of the box and slightly soggy and this is still my favorite chicken and waffle on the North (maybe Houston) That waffle..... is so good. This was a rare find. We were coming back from a Oath Ceremony for my wife. We decided to grab a bite in the local area (decided to try one of the local places since we dont live in the area) since the ceremony was early morning and we didnt have breakfast. Found this place, at first it looked like no one was there and the place looked outdated but after going inside it was great, sadly I was not able to take any pics inside though we did not dine in though. Ordered the Hot Chicken sandwich since I saw reviews about the location mentioning it. The food portions are HUGE and did not expect them to be like it, its great. The cajun and buffalo fries were great as well. Loved the French Toast with chocolate and the Double Chocolate slice was pretty good too. Highly recommend it especially if you are looking towards getting some good ol Texas comfort food. They came with all of the tasty eats and everything you think could be forgotten. The meat was packed full of flavor and the wait staff was so incredibly attentive. They have a rewards program that gives you points each time you eat there and they lead to free meals and what not. No need to worry about ever landing enough rewards for a free meal, once you taste the food, you'll keep coming back and before you know it, your eating another tasty meal on them!
