5 stars all the way! We've used Hansen on two projects now, and it certainly won't be our last. They do top tier work, and also make it easy on you. Our recent project was a complete overhaul of our front and side yard, and we really didn't know what we wanted since we were working with a blank slate (tearing out old Juniper). We met with Louis for the initial consultation and really just shared ideas of what we had in mind (some boulders, plants/trees, lighting, new stairs, etc.). He, Jack, and the team really brought it to life by designing it from scratch (using ideas and preferences we shared) and then working with us throughout the project to make sure everything was installed to our preference. We made a few tweaks along the way (swapping out tree preferences, picking stone colors, etc.), but they easily accommodated and also helped guide us when we weren't quite sure what we wanted. They're also punctual/show up on time, clean up after themselves, communicate daily, and even finished the project early! We anticipated a 4-5 week project but they busted it out in the month of February and even had a few days rained out. We have zero complaints and can't wait to bring the team back for future projects. I highly recommend Hansen Landscape to anyone looking to do a big (or small) landscape project. read more

My wife and I contacted Steve about remodeling our yard. We met with him at his showyard and discussed design elements. And that he would schedule a site inspection where he could see the actual location vs pictures. We were very happy with his presentation. We paid the $1500 for the design gladly. Then we were told that a person would be out to measure the area only with no design consultation. We asked if that meant that he would want to schedule a later onsite visit to talk design specifics. At that point we got a text saying that they were refunding our design fee (which was just paid a little over an hour ago) and that our project was not a good fit. Then radio silence. Ghost. How can asking a single question on a job we expected to run upto if not over $70k be such a deal breaker before any work at all is done!? Shouldn't the process be clear to all parties? And to just take our money then reject the project in the space of a couple of hours over a question of clear communication seems more than dismissive. We are disappointed since Hansen came so highly recommended. We unfortunately cannot recommend Steve and his company. They just treated a simple question for clarification as too demanding. Our front yard was a mess. We gave up on trying to design and execute a new yard ourselves, and decided to hire professionals. Friends recommended Hansen's. We visited their show yard for ideas, then Lewis came to our house to see the space in person. A few days later, he had plans drawn up with options that we could add or leave out. After working out a plan that fit our budget, work was scheduled to begin. I spoke to their nurseryman, Jack, about which plants to include. Once the work was started, it took about 2 weeks to complete the work. This includes a watering system and some up lighting. We are so happy with our new yard. The pictures here were taken about 2 months after completion. We chose mostly native and pollinator plants that need little water. Communication was clear and timely. No surprises. Everything went very smoothly. We would hire Hansen's again in a minute. read more

After 6 months I'd like to leave my review for Hansen Landscape. We worked with them to remodel our front yard: new plants, new lawn and bark. We worked with Louis and Jack and both have been fantastic. After 6 months the result is wonderful and all plants are healthy and blooming. There are a few things I'd like to mention. Both Louis and Jack needed patience with us and they took their time. They came out to us a couple of times to ensure that we will be satisfied. Their crew confirmed small details with us while they were onsite and didn't take action on their own. They finished the job quickly. All plants are looking great and we can't wait to see them grow the next years. The new lawn is doing very well. We had issues with the bark initially, but Hansen Landscape sent out their crew and fixed the issue to our satisfaction without any back and forth. Hansen Landscape is on the pricier site, but we don't regret any penny. You pay for high quality and that's what they deliver. I can't wait to hire them again for our backyard! I cannot say enough positive things about Hansen Landscaping. They transformed what was essentially a backyard wasteland into a beautiful, welcoming space that perfectly complements my midcentury modern home. From the start, Louis took the time to design something thoughtful, creative, and visually aligned with the style of my house. He was always quick to respond and available to stop by throughout the entire process, which gave me great peace of mind. Jack was incredibly helpful in selecting the right plants and trees, guiding me on placement to make the most of both aesthetics and function. I have a brown thumb and he worked with me to select plants that are drought resistant and still beautiful. All talk, no action. My husband and I have a small project we need done in our backyard (200 sqft). We went in to the hansen show yard knowing our project was small and that working with a company as established as Hansen would cost a little more but we were willing to pay the money for a job well done. We had a wonderful chat with Steve, the owner, who promised us that no project is too small and they treat all clients the same. We spent about an hour with him reviewing all our options. He was very specific about their sales process: they come survey the space, then they create a design, THEN they share a quote and contract. A couple days later, Louis, came to our place to review the space. The next day we received a word document quoting a VERY HIGH number. No design, no breakdown of cost, no explanation for how they got to that number. When we responded asking why we didn't receive a design, and asked for a breakdown of cost we were told our project is too small for a design and that it would be impossible to break down cost. We furthered inquired why we were not able to receive the same sales funnel process as all other projects considering this was promised to us via the owner himself and that we were not comfortable signing a contract until we understood what each aspect of the project would cost individually. The response from Louis was: "This project is not a good fit for us. Good luck." Super disappointed. We really wanted to support a local Castro Valley family owned business. We had the pleasure of having Hansen do our backyard landscaping this past June. We had a backyard that was cluttered, minimally functional and lacked cohesiveness. In the last 3 years we owned the house, we rarely spent time outside and our dogs didn't seem to enjoy being outside as much as we had hoped. To start, we obtained about 7 quotes with so much variability in costs, but what we really needed was a team that had a designer that would take our ideas and improve upon them. Our friend recommended Hansen as his neighbor used them for their landscaping needs and were very happy with the results. From initial contact with Steve and viewing the show yard, we knew that Hansen would provide the knowledge, design and landscaping expertise we were searching for. Within a matter of a couple of days, we had confirmed a designer/project manager to come out (Louis) and take our idea, make suggestions, and have an artist draw it up on paper to allow for visualization of what our backyard could look like. The design allowed for flexibility based on our budget and preferences and before we knew it, the team started on our backyard within a matter of a week or so. Everyone we came in contact with was very respectful, knowledgeable and really allowed us to be involved in making sure the work was up to our standards. Louis checked in frequently and was extremely responsive, though his foreman Jaime was on top of all the details day to day. When it came to choosing the plants, Jack was more than helpful in answering my questions and incorporated my specific requests. Additionally, everyone was very patient with a few last minute changes I made with the design. On project completion, Louis did a final walk through to ensure we were satisfied with the work and provided teaching on the irrigation controls and sustaining the plants. We now have a very functional, beautiful, modern design that seemed to expose so much space we previously never appreciated. We've already enjoyed many days and nights lounging outside and our dogs have so much more room to run around in and are very much enjoying a clutter-free yard. Bought a house and moved to the CV area back in 2021. Fast forward to this year w/ a new baby w/ cabin fever and the need to get our yard established was an urgent need. Reached out to other landscapers and they were quick to execute on our initial vision of paving the whole yard to make it safe our little one, but Hansen was the first to help us envision a yard that was diverse and vibrant than just paving/installing concrete all over. Hansen's has done two projects for us: our backyard several years ago, and most recently our front yard. We get so many compliments from neighbors and passersby on the design and quality of the work! We live on a funky, narrow street in a neighborhood from the 1940's, and the project manager/designer was able to tailor a solution to our idiosyncratic hillside lot that preserved parking while maximizing the remaining outdoor space. During the first project we received regular communication from the project manager regarding what work was upcoming and what equipment would be on-site, allowing us to relay this info to our neighbors to keep the peace. The second project took place during the pandemic and there were noticeable differences in the timeliness of the work and the communication about it, but both the owner and project manager were very forthright about the causes of each delay and clear about what they were doing to mitigate it, when asked. The Hansen's staff is very friendly both to us and to our neighbors. They are always willing to move a truck or equipment that is restricting someone's access, and they talked to our 5-year-old for hours and answered his thousands of questions about what they were doing and why. I can't say enough about how good our experience has been with Hansen. From the very beginning of the process, Steve listened to us and made great suggestions on how to get what we wanted. We had our entire landscaping redone. Steve designed our front, back, and side yards through a process where there was constant and clear communication. He was clear on what he could deliver for the budget we had and boy did he deliver. When it came time to execute the design, his team of workers came on time every day, worked the entire time, and cleaned up everything at the end of the day. They were professional, kind, polite, talented, hard working, and friendly. They finished everything under the estimated time given to us. That has never happened with any contractor we have ever hired to do any project at our house. They came back to inspect the work and to replace any plants that died due to the heat wave we had the day after they planted. They have followed up and went above and beyond the design and our expectations by putting in extra drains from our gutter spouts to protect a path from washing away on the side of our house when it does finally rain. That wasn't even in the contract and they didn't charge us any extra money to do it! They may not be your least expensive option. I do have to say that you get what you pay for. I don't regret spending what we spent with Hansen and I have no regrets in hiring them for this job. The transformation was nothing short of miraculous. We feel like we have our own private park now. We bought our house new almost 40 yrs ago and have had Hansen's do a lot of projects over the years. The biggest project was dealing with a huge hill that nothing but weeds would grow on. Steve (the owner) drew up a plan that was as if he was reading my mind. The curving path is just like backpacking switchbacks and has held up all these years very nicely. He took a very labor intensive area (due to weeds) and turned it into the easiest to care for area in our front or back yard. We worked with Louis for a full backyard renovation, and he did a wonderful job talking through our vision/coming up with a design that we loved, while keeping our budget in mind. I really appreciated that the initial design included all the bells and whistles ($$$) but had recommendations for more cost effective options and notes on where he'd choose to save or revisit later. We had Hansen Landscaping redo our front and backyards a little over a year ago and I thought for sure I had given them a five-star review, but I just came on to update it with new info and it isn't there...at any rate, I was going to update the review to say Hansen's customer service deserves more than five stars. I'll get to the actual work next, but I just received a letter from Steve Hansen checking in on how I'm feeling about the project, whether any latent problems have surfaced, and offering a complimentary hour of consultation and pruning/irrigation work that might be desired. I should mention, this is on top of the several scheduled post-project completion check-ins that were included in the contract. Who does that?! The absolute best, that's who! =) So we basically started with a dead lawn in our front yard and a bunch of pea gravel in our backyard with a square perimeter of bark and some plants. We live in East Oakland to give you a sense of the size of yards. Hansen Landscaping completely transformed both spaces, providing life and a sense of separation in the front yard and a sense of warmth in the backyard! This was accomplished by creating dryscaping in the front yard, with a raised mound, a couple trees, and various other plants and in the backyard the pea gravel was removed and replaced with artificial grass and the border was converted into a more wavy shape and an account tree was moved for better placement and flow. I had my doubts about the artificial grass, but it completely transformed the feel of the backyard for the better and it honestly looks real! We now have the benefit of a beautiful grass yard without worrying about grass stains, feeling itchy, or any constant upkeep. It costs more on the front end, but it's with it! All of our friends and family have been very impressed as well. The project wasn't without it's slight complications. I had already put in some rocks that were covered in the front, a couple plants were removed that I wasn't expecting, and the flagstone walkway didn't extend as far as I wanted it to (to fully reach where the car doors would open), and there was a small section of the front yard that was somehow overlooked, but Hansen remedied all of these issues as soon as I raised them and at no cost. Every project has its issues, and it's possible I could have communicated things better on my end or been more attentive during the work, but I always say the important part is how a contractor responds when problems arise and Hansen knocked that out of the park! It was awhile ago, but I recall being impressed with how quickly the project was completed, too. In total, I think everything was accomplished in a few days, definitely less than a week, and that surprised me because it really was a complete facelift for both yards. Oh, I forgot to mention they completely replaced our wasteful sprinklers (backyard wasn't even working previously) with a drip system! Hansen wasn't the cheapest quote we received, but they also weren't close to the most expensive, either. At the end of the day, I feel we received more than our money's worth by going with Hansen and continue to be impressed by their commitment to excellence. read more

While there was a long lead time for getting the work started, once they got going, it was less than 2 weeks. Now we have a water-wise landscape with drip irrigation and are so happy to go outside, especially at night with the amazing lighting. We didn't have many choices for landscaping contractors. Hansen Landscape just completed a front yard makeover for us and we are very happy with the finished product. The quality of their work and level of professionalism. Louis was the overall project designer and lead. He was responsive and available throughout the design and construction phase. We made a few adjustments during the construction phase and they accommodated them with ease. We did our due diligence and got three bids from licensed/bonded contractors. Hansen's wasn't the lowest but Steve the owner gave us the highest level of confidence and established trust from the very beginning. If you are looking for a low ball bid with no price integrity then Hansen's is not the company for you. However, if trust, honestly, price integrity, quality and reliability are important then we would definitely recommend Hansen's. We hired them as they were going to project manage the entire project making sure everything was done at the proper time and the job went smoothly. They excelled in everything. Their attention to detail on all aspects of the job, cement, landscape & overlay was excellent. Steve drew up the front yard plan based on our discussions. Jack was our project manager who continually checked in throughout the job, answered all of our questions, discussed with us the options on specific details. He even helped us on the details of doing the driveway. He did the final placing of plants and did an outstanding job - everything looks great and it all flows nicely together. Steve talked me into night lighting which my wife wanted and I did not. Steve was absolutely right - it too, looks great and was needed. They subcontracted out all of the cement work, our driveway and walkways plus the overlay for the backyard cement, new and old. The subcontractors were also excellent. My wife's colleague referred us to Hansen when we were thinking of redoing our backyard. Our primary contract manager was Louis. When we went in we had a certain idea that we wanted to do to our yard, after Louis heard us out he suggested a few different ideas that we had not initially thought off, like a fire pit and a counter for our outside deck. Once he drew the design and showed it to us we absolutely loved it! He was also very adaptable to fit the project into our budget without sacrificing on quality of materials or on the design. The project took about 2 - 3 months to finish a complete redesign of our backyard which included bark area for a play structure, trees, bushes and irrigation, redo of our deck and installing a bar counter, installing a concrete fire pit and putting in a new fence. The finished product is amazing! We have had numerous parties at our house and we only hear complements about the yard! The space fits perfectly for our kids who love playing in the yard now. I very much disliked the big red ugly plants and the sprawling plant with the small daisy-like flowers That were in the front of my house.  Equally disliked the red-leafed plant directly behind the tree trunk - always looked like it was dead or dying. My house has been painted and is now a grayish color with a blue shade on the shutters so I wanted to have some blue plants and lavender colored blooms to pick up the color of my wisteria on the left side of the porch steps. I had a concept in my head that I presented to the Landscape team - using blue plumbago that will fill in across the front of the right side of my house, and white African iris to the far right encompassing a large boulder - suggestive of the single white African iris and boulder I have at the extreme left side of the front of my house. Also included some society garlic to pull in a pinkish lavender to blend with the wisteria and compliment the blue in the plumbago.   Used some flowering thyme to edge the pavers. I just happened to have two matching clay pots so decided to put them at the bottom of both porch step railing posts with society garlic. I like the way Greg helped me to position some of the rocks I already had to cluster around the pot on the right. I will give the plants a chance to mature and get bigger then reassess to see if I want to add anything more in the space. The area turned out just as I envisioned.  Love the largest boulder your team selected and we nestled two other rocks I had to make a nice grouping with the three African iris and the society garlic in the front of the boulder. All the workers were very courteous, hard working, and knowledgeable. They were at my house all day; cleaned up everything before they left. Owner Steve Hansen even sent me an email the next morning to be sure I was satisfied with the work done. I've been told if any of the new plants are C "strugfling", Hansen's will tend to them and replace them if necessary. i also use Steve 's yard care service you can find listed as My Gardner. It took us 6 years to finally call a landscape architect to design our sloping hill. We had no idea of the design, cost, materials, with the exception of we wanted fruit trees and a vegetable garden. Needless to say, we were clueless. I wanted to use a local company, and only heard great things about Hansen. They also recently completed the front yard of a neighbor, which helped speed up our decision. I could not be happier with the results! They worked with our budget and gave options to lower the cost. Been seeing Hansen Landscape trucks around the neighborhood and remembered that he did our landscape 33 years ago. Took my wife to their yard in Castro Valley and was met by Steve the owner. He showed us around and I took pictures of the things I want to redo both our yards. I pretty much know what I like (Chinese theme) and where I like them, and he stated there's a $1500 design fee which will be applied to the contract price should we hired him. I'd called him and asked him based on what I want, how much (ballpark figure) would it cost so I can budget. I said he didn't think he can work with us. Case close, he just lost a customer. read more
