$300!!! BEWARE!! I THINK THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN SOLD. I DON'T THINK IT IS THE SAME FAMILY THAT OWNED IT FOR YEARS. I had been with Hansen's and Sons for years and been very happy. $300!!! The ignition switch was not working. The technician pulled the unit away from the wall and pushed it back in again and that fixed the problem with the ignition. I assume the movement must had wiggled something that had caused the problem. He also cleaned some build up on the inside but that was not what was causing the problem. In fact, he never did figure out what had been causing the switch not to work. He asked if I wanted him to figure it out and I said "No" since it was now working. For this half an hour of work they charged me a $300 "diagnostic" fee., despite the fact that they did not diagnose the problem with the switch. That equals a $600/hr. rate. The explained that they don't charge an hourly rate because if the tech was training a new employee, it would cost the client more for the extra time. . read more

Approximately 2 years ago, our woodburning fireplace was due for a good cleaning and an inspection. We were using social media reviews on various sites and came across a coupon for one place. They had great reviews on Google, but were fairly new. They were also cheap. Do you know that saying "you get what you paid for"? That was so true! The cleaning was done an inspection also done and we were told we need a new chimney liner, ours was cracked & not safe for use! 3 quotes came for this, ranging from $4400 to $5800! We asked to see the video or pictures, to show us why this needed replacement. The photos they showed my husband was on a cell phone, and so very blurry. We declined all bid, deciding to not use the fireplace, as we were on a limited budget due to an accident which had removed half our household income. Forward to this fall, talks of blackouts and super high energy costs with myself still disabled from the accident, I wanted a second opinion on this liner issue. I wanted a reputable, reliable company with good reviews and longevity in the business and to me that meant to call Hansen's! He came out for inspecting the whole fireplace, complete with a very clear video. Not only did that other company try to scam us for buying a liner, when ours was totally fine they also only swept/cleaned 2/3 of the chimney! All this was clearly seen in the video Hansen's took. Highly recommended, these guys are clearly honest and explain what they see, what the recommend, and why. Are they cheap? Nope. But priceless when you think of what we could have spent, when dealing with a company that does not know a seam in the liner is just a seam, is normal, and is not a crack! read more

I'm surprised I have not left a review for these folks until now. About 3 years ago the did a gas insert installation in what had been a less than ideal '70s gas fireplace. They also did necessary chimney cap repair. Their people were thoroughly professional. Everything was done on time and with expertise. I love to write or call about good service but in this case I want to spare other customers the grief I went through with Hansen and Sons. They installed a set of fake gas logs in my fireplace which stopped working properly while still under warranty so I called them in late November of 2020 and they didn't get it repaired until late March of 2021 ! ............ but only after such frustration that I finally called the maker of the unit in California to try to contact the area Rep. I called him several times, each time asking for information . He never called in 30 days! I would never recommend this company. They were condescending and very difficult to work with. read more

The folks who rebuilt my chimney from the roofline up were very skilled and the finished chimney looks great and is safe. They had to contend with working outdoors during the polar vortex, and making sure the grout cured properly given the sub-zero temperatures. So they created an enclosure using scaffolding and tarps, and heated it to keep the work safe. I'm very happy with the work they did. I also needed to line my chimney, and they did that work too. A bit over-zealously, as when I built my first fire, the smoke backed up into the living room. They sent someone out to have a look and found that the opening they left was too small, so they opened it up a bit larger and I haven't had a problem with smoke backing up ever since. I'm very happy with the workmanship and the safety of my newly-rebuilt chimney. It's great to have a working fireplace in an older house; so cozy. read more

Hansen's installed the new cap on our chimney and removed the no-longer-functional damper that was impeding the draft ... but that cap decided to freeze shut on the coldest day of 2019. It did it again, in early December. So what did they do? They came out and inspected it, then replaced it with a new cap that will survive a Wisconsin winter ... and didn't charge a penny for it. Over a year ago Hansen & Sons did a cleaning and inspection of our chimney. We buy wood almost every night during the winter. They did a through job of cleaning and inspecting. They found a number of problems. One was inside the firebox and the brick were cracked and in piece. They wanted to charge and very high amount. I replaced they myself. The second problem was at the top of the chimney and again the prices quoted seem high. I used another firm for half the price quoted. Seemed like the cleaning was used to up sell other service. read more

Hansen and Son's did a great job for me on fixing my chimney leak. I called them to ask if they could fix the leak in my chimney that was flowing into my basement and they came out promptly. They said if the chimney chase was replaced they would guarantee the stoppage of the leak. Over the next year it still leaked a limited amount and they continued to come out to find the problem at no charge. I am happy to say I can put drywall back up in my basement again without fear. It's rare to find a business that stands by their spoken word. I would not hesitate to call them again for any service they offer. read more

We needed a chimney repair at the worst possible time of the year. Late last fall during the rainy season we discovered we had a leak from the chimney on our roof. Hansen's quickly responded to our request for an estimate. Unfortunately they were booked out pretty far. Our roof repair wasn't scheduled until February. While leaking wasn't an issue during the winter months, it seemed like a long wait. When they finally called to set the date, it was during the snow and freezing temps last month. Despite the weather, the technicians were out there taking care of the repairs. Very competent and friendly technicians. I highly recommend Hansen's for your chimney and fireplace repairs. read more

We hired Hansen & Sons to clean our fireplace chimney & put the chimney cap back on (It had blown off in a recent storm). They charged us $200.00 to clean it and said the chimney cap could not be put on because the top of the flue liner was cracked. The provided a quotation to repair this that was in excess of $6,000.00. We have had this chimney rebuilt from the roofline up with all new chimney flue. Yes that was a few years ago, but the total cost of the project including repairing our front steps cost less than $2,000.00 from a very competent competitor of theirs. What they were quoting on was removing the top 2 sections of flue and replacing them with a stainless steel adaptor that would extend above the chimney. Then they would cast a new chimney crown & re-mount the cap. Naturally we didn't respond to their quotation. After doing work on our chimney a few years back, another local chimney company took a look at it today and couldn't believe how cobbled together the work was that Hansen & Sons did to "restore" our chimney. Had this company clean our fireplace for 15 years. Always very fast and professional. Always happy. Except for this last time. Kris was great. He took all of 5 minutes to clean the fireplace. The glass was not cleaned, the blower was not cleaned, the brick in the fire box was not brushed. According to the company, this is not part of the $329.00 chimney cleaning service. It used to be. Also found out we are no longer in their preferred area. They only want to work in Madison. But we were grandfathered in. The chimney inspection was a flashlight up the chimney. We had birds in the fireplace and asked Kris to check it out. He said everything was okay. But how did 3 birds get in? Not pleased with the service we got for the cost. read more

Initially we were thrilled they can out to give us a quote on installing a gas insert into our Victorian home. A bit of an honest cost but that's what we wanted. While reviewing our options and whether or not we could afford it, time went by. We called in October with the decision to go ahead with the project (nearly $8000) and was told that since this was their busy season they would NOT be coming out to Lake Mills until NEXT SPRING. We easily made an appointment for an estimate and got a thorough explanation and evaluation of issues with both of our chimneys (another leading firm failed to show up for the estimate and never returned my subsequent phone messages). The work crew had a couple of surprising short days and then packed up before the work was completed (thus, the 4 vs. 5 stars)--an issue that was quickly addressed when I called for an explanation. I had the worst experience with Hansen and Sons. I called Tracy to schedule an appointment one month in advance with Bill for a diagnostic for $89. She called me just before the appointment to tell me the price is going to be $329 and it's going be with a different person and we have to reschedule. This is not a trustworthy business when they can change everything at the last minute. Please find or schedule appointment with some other place. Worst experience ever! read more

Did significant research before buying a woodburning insert. I ultimately went with the enviro. Very happy with price, online discount and service. My only complaint was that the install was dustier than I expected. The the floor around the fireplace was covered and cleaned but I was left with fine dust on our furniture and piano. I heads us to roll up carpet and drape furniture would have really appreciated. Of note, I'm also very happy with the insert choice and function. read more

I would never recommend, refer, or use Hansen and Sons again. Looks like Rick K on 6/27/2019 had the same issue. On us, it was a two fold issue. We started out with a salesman that said the new chimney vent would fit inside existing masonry chimney flues. During Demo, we requested they revisit the situation for no surprises, and they send a technician who said "oh hell no" you need to remove the flues. Change order 1. Asked them what height they needed the masonry lintel in at to make the offset up the existing chimney, installed in, and low and behold, they needed it raised again during install. Now to the best part, I have an email dated 8/28/2018 indicating terms and conditions of warranty, and we call them for annual inspection and they say we missed the date, because its past 8/31/2019, which was the day they installed the unit, but didn't do the full install, so it wasn't even an operational unit. It was like setting the motor in a car, and telling you its road worthy without doors and tires. There is no language indicating what "starts" the warranty. Samantha is now emailing over a new "terms and conditions warranty" dated 6/27/19. Updated 10 months after they finished the job! I would run far, run fast, and go visit UNITED BRICK, another local REGENCY DEALER! Horrible customer experience and customer service and if I can save even one more person from having to deal with it, the better off we all are. Regency Fireplace is great, but there are others to rely on for customer satisfaction. read more
