The tech arrived early and discussed a couple things with me prior to starting. The cleaning took approximately 45 minutes. After he was done, he went through a list of things he'd found and suggestions. Basically the inspection came down to "don't use this thing again". Unfortunately for us, the pipe coming from the stove was not installed correctly and was too thin, the backing material on the wall to protect against heat wasn't fire proof. The hearth area was too short and the distance of the stove to the walls was too close. He also inspected the chimney which runs through an upstairs bedroom and found that the flashing that surrounded the pipe coming through the floor was not fire proof and the pipe itself, while sufficiently insulated, needed to be enclosed per code (something not mentioned by our home inspector). Basically the entire set up is a fire hazard. We won't be using our wood stove again and luckily know now that the entire thing is a fire waiting to happen. The tech didn't offer to correct these things or suggest additional work he could do. He did the cleaning, gave a professional opinion (even though it was all bad for us) and his rate was reasonable. I'd definitely recommend Zim's and suggest an inspection of any fireplace or wood stove before using.

I had bought my first home with a wood burning fireplace/chimney. I am new to fireplaces, so I went…read morewith this business to inspect and update anything needed to make my fireplace in good working order for the winter. When they came out, they got my wife (I work all day, so my wife had to deal with these people). Upon doing their inspection, they told my wife the following which was texted to me by her (see photo 1). We went ahead and hired this company to do the work and make those replacements (see photo 2 on how it looked before the work was done. What they said was going to be a week took almost three weeks and several phone calls with an update on what's going on. They came and did the work and we paid them. I'm going to assume they weren't going to think we were going to look at their work (please see photos 3 and 4 which is what we paid roughly 1800 dollars for). Needless to say I wasn't happy, and neither was my wife. She reached out to them and communicated what I thought was going on with their workmanship (please see photo number 5 for their reply). For them to actually argue that the collar they put on wasn't almost completely if not totally mangled and bent is absurd. Their reply was beyond mind boggling. We decided to have them come out and replace the mangled and bent collar (see photo 6 for the replaced collar). Also see photo 7 of the mess on my lawn they didn't clean up. The fact that they replaced the shoddy workmanship did help and ultimately prevent a complaint with the BBB and/or a potential lawsuit, but that is the last business I will do with these clowns. I will be giving my money and repeat business to a different chimney/fireplace company. Please take this review into consideration if you choose to go with this business.

The guys coming out to service the chimney and stove have been stellar. Unfortunately, I just tried to get some family members who are new to the area lined up with Top Hat on the phone and a guy named Ron was completely irritating. He was impatient, curt and wouldn't give me the information I needed without an attitude. I asked for list of measurements and photos my family should bring in to allow them to determine what could and couldn't be done and he refused to do that (because no one could come to their house to make the determination??) I am close to never calling Top Hat again for my own needs. I'll certainly check elsewhere for what my family hopes to install.

We had a pretty good experience with Top Hat, despite some hiccups. We had them install a slate…read moreveneer over our old brick fireplace, as well as install an electric fireplace insert which we purchased from them. We found a veneer in their showroom that we liked. They had a cheaper veneer that looked similar so we ultimately went with that (unfortunately). They installed it in a timely fashion, though there was a miscommunication between the sales rep and the installer, and the corner pieces weren't ordered, and the lack of corner pieces wasn't caught when it was installed, so the veneer was installed without corner pieces and the slate stone was cut flush in the front at the edges. Also, the install was not seamless, there were gaps where you could see the brick below the veneer and it was uneven in places. We contacted Top Hat, and let them know we were not happy! They were very accommodating, and apologetic about the mistake they made. They agreed to remove the old veneer and re-install using the same product. The day of re-installation, we were able to talk directly with their mason, it was determined that the cheap(er) veneer we went with was very flaky and hard to work with (it was a new product that they had not used before) so at his suggestion we upgraded to the higher quality veneer at very small price increase. So int he end they removed the old stuff, and re-installed the new product (with corner pieces), all at no additional cost to us, and now everything looks awesome. We felt their customer service was great, they always kept us in the loop, and strived to keep us happy. Sure they made a mistake initially, but IMO the true test was how they treated us AFTER the mistake, and we felt they were awesome in that regard.

He badly scratched the hardwood floors in front of the fireplace with the metal eyelets of his shoes and then denied it, despite the fact that the blanket he brought was not spread out and his feet were hanging off of it. He pointed to a number of nearby superficial scratches saying that he couldn't have made the fresh deep ones past the edge of the blanket where his shoes had been, but I have photos that suggest otherwise. If you want a careless contractor who will show up late and damage your floors, this is your guy!

We got 3 estimates, then a friend at church recommended Joe at Dane County Chimney and Masonry who recently rebuilt her chimney.
