Grew up in Nevada County and somehow never realized Alta was this little community tucked away in the mountains! I was out this way doing some work when I stumbled across this eatery and figured I'd stop in for a drink. Well... that drink turned into ordering The Powerhouse breakfast - eggs, country potatoes, bacon, and buttered sourdough toast. EPIC meal!! Everything tasted fresh, hearty, and comforting. Those country potatoes especially took me straight back to mornings camping in the mountains - crispy, flavorful, and seriously good. The whole plate hit my tastebuds with a slap of goodness The restaurant itself was clean, quaint, and welcoming with that cozy, no-frills small-town feel that's getting harder to find. And the staff? Extremely warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming - exactly the kind of hospitality you hope to stumble across in a little mountain community. One of those unexpected roadside finds that makes you glad you stopped. If you're passing through Alta and need to rest, refuel, and get a damn good breakfast, pull over and give this joint a try. Oh my! Where do I start!? We're locals, and the wife and I decided to head up on a Sunday afternoon to check this place out. OH MY GOD I'M GLAD WE DID!! The people here are amazing, very nice, and very appreciative that we came. We're also local business owners and understand that. Saying the food is phenomenal is definitely an understatement!! Holy cow! Best burger I've EVER had!!! I really felt at home here, was even comfortable talking to other locals at the table next to us. While staying up in Alta with my sister, we wanted to indulge in a local spot, and I'm so glad we found Hangry Howie's! We were greeted as soon as we walked through the door, and the whole place had such a warm, welcoming, homey vibe. I ordered the breakfast skillet, and I can honestly say it was the best breakfast I've ever had. I never seem to have much luck when I order breakfast out, but Hangry Howie's absolutely nailed it. The potatoes were cooked perfectly, everything was delicious, and the service was awesome. Hangry Howie's will forever be a must-stop for me whenever I'm visiting my sister. Only found out about Hangry Howies while visiting my cousin in nearby Dutch Flat. No food pictures, just a great 2 hour overdue visit while enjoying some amazing food. I had the Moody Ridge in the skillet version, of which you can also choose to be in a burrito. I think I gained 10 pounds, but it was worth every bite. The service was top notch in this awesome little cozy restaurant. In talking with my cousin and the owner, they can get quite busy at times, and i will attest that it's worth getting off the insanity of I-80 to take a break and enjoy a great meal. I love finding spots like this and highly recommend them over a chain anytime. read more

Fun and funky. Food was better than good. Staff was personable. Keep your expectations low as far as decor and ambiance...this place is basic quaint. Hangry Howies serves up a delicious homestyle breakfast with a super cozy family kitchen feel. The staff/owners are easy going and welcoming, and the service was quick. Being vegetarian, I never know exactly what kind of options will be available in a small town restaurant, but Hangry Howies has quite a few, along with a note from the chef on the menu to ask about anything not on the menu because they enjoy a challenge. It's a hole in the wall place in Alta but man it was delicious. We split the Cowboy burger with some really nice tangy sweet bbq sauce and chunks of bacon and onion rings on top. They brand the buns with HH which is a unique touch. The potato salad came with. It was super fresh and had just the right amount of dill. I should have taken a picture of the enormous cheese skirt. It's a great little spot tucked into the Alta / Dutch Flat Area. The owners and cooks are friendly and happy to converse. Parking is a bit precarious - tons of potholes ( deep af ) - can't give it 5 stars only because the burger buns were pretty dry and industrial - burger buns are so easy to make fresh! C'mon guys... and the other issue is they don't ask you how you want your patty cooked - I got 2 thick well done patties a travesty! Seriously though it was still very good in spite of those things and I'll be coming back soon! read more
