My husband and I were on a cruise and decided to visit Armin at Hang Gliding Maui. My family and I have visited him years ago and fell in love with this activity. This was by far the most incredible thing I've done. Armin is THE BEST. What a nice guy and beyond accommodating. I had the privilege of flying with Armin again in May of this year and had an absolute blast. Again! On this trip our friends from Australia came to visit Maui, too, and I urged my buddy to do a trike flight. He was excited to try it. He flew first in the trike, and after his flight (which he loved), I flew in the gyro plane, which I really enjoyed. It was a breezy day but the gyro was not phased at all by the wind. I have friends with small private planes and flying in the open air in a trike or gyro is a completely different experience, and makes you jealous of birds! I first did this event in 2014. It was really great. I have since flown with Armin on every subsequent visit to Maui - sometimes twice! I've been all the way around the (southern) island. To the top of Haleakala. I keep one particular photo handy on my phone and share it with anyone interested in such flying. I have also now flown this type of "trike" many other places in the world, many times (70+ hours), but the experience at Maui is the best for the consistent great weather and scenery, and it's great flying with Armin! He quickly communicates, is incredibly friendly and energetic, and supremely in-touch with all safety issues and concerns you may have. His trike is rigged with a GoPro for photos and videos. The hanger is filled with things to read and a pool table for those waiting while you're in the air. Statistics about the flight: we went up to 4500 feet cut the engine and glided all the way down to a safe and smooth landing. This aircraft is called a trike or a weight shift control lightsport aircraft and can be flown with a Sport pilot license. With the 80 hp engine we were able to climb 1000 feet per minute. Cruise speed was 60 mph and top speed is 100 mph. The Hang glider can withstand 6 positive G-forces and 3 negative. The aircraft is also equipped with a ballistic recovery system. Was a gift to my husband for his birthday. He did the 45 min while my friend did the 30 min tour. 45 min trip gives you extra waterfalls. They felt safe and really enjoyed the experience. Paid the extra for pictures which were really cool. Armin is a very friendly, professional guy. He is also an experienced and confident instructor. The family hung out in his hanger and he had activities (and wifi - a luxury on the Hana side) to keep us busy while the others flew. We were amazed by seeing all of the waterfalls and craters invisible from the ground, unless you trekked for hours or days through jungle, many of the places you can see from the air are inaccessible by foot. This was a wonderful experience, even after living on Maui for many years, I saw the island as I never had. I was going to skip it and just have my sister go as a graduation gift, but couldn't resist. Armin, the pilot, is very amicable and enthusiastic, making each rider feel safe and like their trip is going to be the best one that day. Apparently he moved to Maui in his early years from Germany to hang glide and never left. What a job.... Ask him to take you to Honomanu Valley (I think) where he'll take you over a 1,000-ft waterfall. Knowing the area, it was really great to see places I had gone to and camped as a kid from a bird's eye view. You can also ask him to climb and drop, and glide back down with the engine off. This was really worth the $130 (1/2 hour) and I'm also glad after the fact for the pictures. The hangar where you wait is pleasant at the quiet Hana airport, and it's easy to find. Be sure to make reservations and budget enough time to drive to Hana if you haven't before. The website has a good FAQ for this. read more

Yes, yes, and yes. This was a very cool experience. The sites of Hana from above were ridiculous - the waterfalls, windy roads, the lush scenery, whales, black sand beach, beautiful Pacific, and clouds. Armin is such a great guy too. Very down to earth. It helped make the experience. The landing was my favorite part, as we came in at 70 mph. My second favorite part was being in the clouds. So lovely. The only downfall? Armin is required to make the tour 'instructional', which means he doesn't stop talking for 30-minutes about the aircraft and sights.
