Our usual supplier, Coast appliances, did not have any machines in stock and if we did order from them our tenants would have to wait a months time before delivery. As suspected, a new pump was needed , which they had in their truck ( cuz I told them what was wrong) ....final bill was close to $400! The pump was $90 Two technicians were here for about 1/2 hour .....$300 labor for 2 guys ....nothing like bending you over and sticking it to you!! read more

We called in "Handy Appliances", Vancouver, to more firmly secure our dishwasher under the kitchen counter-top. Their experienced technician, Alex, arrived on schedule and completed a professional job (no additional parts necessary) in under an hour. However, our very positive impression was shattered on receiving an invoice for over $290.00! While Alex's time was billed at a reasonable $98.00 per hour, there was a whopping $179.95 + taxes already charged to my credit card (without authorization) for a mysteriously vague "diagnostic" fee .. when NO DIAGNOSIS was required as the exact problem was clearly explained prior to the call-out. Fair business practice in Canada would have been to include Alex's time within the "diagnostic" fee as all the work was completed within the statutory first hour and there was zero additional time involved. Other customers have complained about the same poor practice but without any change in this arrogant company's policies. I recommend that all potential new customers make their own informed assessment of the gobbledygook quoted below directly from their website and shop around before hiring "Handy Appliances" - fortunately, for Vancouverites, there are more reputable appliance repair businesses operating in the area with both experienced technicians and clearly stated competitive rates: ...... ..."Our diagnosis fee includes : Technician's travel time/fuel Diagnosis Time Check parts availability & quote price * If you decide to proceed after the diagnostic, labour will be billed in addition to the diagnostic fee. Avoid Handy Appliances!! I booked Handy Appliances to repair a small dishwasher that had a cracked hose. I paid the initial approximately $135 diagnostic fee. The repair person didn't have a replacement hose in the truck, it had to be ordered and I waited a week for it to arrive. When the fellow was here diagnosing, I asked him how much it would be for the install and he very clearly said that I would only have to pay additionally for the part. The part was $79. But, I was also subsequently charged the $79 for the part plus $148 for install labour. You are sent an email asking that you approve the charge, but when it says Total $227 plus tax, you can easily think that is the full total, especially since at the start I been told that the repair would be about that amount, so it looked right. It says in small print that that doesn't include the diagnostic fee. This is a warning to anyone considering using Handy. Do not listen to what the repair person tells you. While a nice guy who did good work, he does not override their small print. I assumed that he represented the company. The diagnostics took just minutes, and the repair less than half-hour. My total was closer to $400 including the diagnostic fee. I won't use Handy Appliances again. read more

In my dealings with the company, I would applaud then. Give them a hand(y), so to speak. Their initial response to my inquiry was done in a very expeditious fashion. In fact, every e-mail communication thereafter with Jasmin P. was cordial, professional, and timely. Communications were clear and straightforward. Jasmin also sent a follow-up e-mail asking how the delivery, installation, and removal went. Yes, the Kitchenaid (KDFE204KWH) appliance had to be ordered from the manufacturer, but it arrived considerably sooner than the maximum estimated time. The appointment for installation and removal was done speedily thereafter. There was somewhat of a delay in the actual arrival time to do the installation/removal, but that was neither pronounced nor problematic. The installer was polite and totally on task. The special promotion included no delivery and removal fees. It was much appreciated and tipped the scales for us - over other companies. Handy Appliances' prices are surely competitive with other companies, but every extra inducement counts. Plus, the promotion included an extra year warranty at no cost. This gives a distinct impression that the company trusts their products and stands behind them. It was notable that the company also requires the purchase of stainless steel tubing. It's quality over cheapness. . . . The appliance itself is super, especially for the price and compared to other alike dishwashers. The stainless steel interior, extra third cleaning tray, overall slick design, cleaning/drying options, and exceedingly quiet operation are all standout attributes. We tried it several times, and we certainly wouldn't want to wash our hands of this dishwasher. So far, so good. read more

We have to replace our older Miele condenser dryer and Handy Appliances has been very accommodative and professional, the dryer got installed very quickly and they didn't leave any messes behind. Would give zero or negative stars if possible. Terrible customer service, extremely shady business practices and just overall terrible to deal with. Have now been over a month trying to get the ice maker on my Liebherr fridge repaired. Even just getting a tech to show up and diagnose the problem was an utter gongshow, and they take zero accountability for their unreliability. So much awful, but long story short: They don't show up when they say they will, they lied about what's wrong with my appliance and tried to tack on hundreds of $ in unnecessary parts and labour, they said would take 2-3 days to get the part I did need but forgot to order it and after 10+ days admitted that they had done so after I chased them around--but not only that had ordered the wrong part and now needed to wait further weeks for the correct part, which oops is more than double the cost of what they quoted me initially. Just a total mangling of customer service and when I complained they basically said they would refund the $175 for the initial service call and told me they were closing the service order. Just an absolute and total joke. AVOID. UPDATE: Euro Appliances Canada referred me to Totem Appliance Repair and we had them in today. Two completely professional and lovely technicians showed up 15 minutes early, and fixed the unit by replacing the cracked ice tray in under an hour. The final charge was just over $200. This is significantly less than the almost $1000 Handy Appliances attempted to charge me ($175 for diagnostic visit where technician lied and said I needed an entirely new ice making unit AND new door latches for fridge and freezer, $621 for new ice maker unit and then a further $200 to install it, etc). In short: Handy rips people off and I have a working ice maker and an invoice to prove it. As I said before: AVOID. And Totem were absolutely excellent. Call them instead. read more

I had a service call to diagnose my fridge which the technician did competently. I then asked them to quote on the cost to replace the rubber casket on my washing machine. Handy Appliances insisted on charging me $53 to do that. I'm literally telling them, "I want to give you the business, just tell me how much it will cost before you proceed." If my landlord hadn't requested I used these guys, I would have gone with someone else. read more

I purchased a Samsung fridge from Handy Appliances and I am very happy with it. It was delivered quickly and is very quiet. A number of years ago I bought and LG Wash and Dry Combo. After a few years there was a problem with the hose. A repair person came and fixed it very efficiently. read more

My dryer stopped working last Tuesday, the 24th of March.. While Handy was unable to send a technician until Saturday, I was able to get Andy's Appliance & Refrigeration to come by Wednesday morning. My dryer was part of a Laundry Centre which was very old and would need ongoing repairs so we decided to purchase a new one. Andy recommended Handy, whom we have used before. Rocky, at Handy was able to sell us a new Laundry Centre that would fit in our closet space and had it delivered and installed by Friday pm, March 27. In these trying times, we were most appreciative of both Andy's professionalism and helpfulness and Handy's ability to provide and install a new unit in such a timely manner. Very pleased with these guys, Deep gave us a fab deal on 5 appliances, have been looking around and no place cheaper by 100's of $. Had washer dryer delivered Monday and the guys did an excellent job installing them, checking they worked etc. Then Thursday, I had 3 kitchen appliances delivered to my rental apt and again, the guys did a great job esp getting the dishwasher set up in a tight spot. These guys were all class guys, polite, professional etc. Other appliance companies (thinking Trail for sure) just don't seem interested in selling to us little guys, perhaps only interested in BIG sales to developers? read more

After waiting 3 wks for a part for fridge that was freezing everything, I had them contacted again by landlord and lo and behold the part was arriving the next day. Make arrangements for Monday and am advised repair man sick. Re-schedule to Tues and am advised he will call b/w 8 & 9. He does and says he'll come b/w 1-3 and gives me the name of his employer who I call to say not ok that I now have Tues messed up with appt not til sometime in pm. She says she'll call repair guy and get back to me. Almost noon and no call back. I call her. She tells me she spoke to him and he will try to come earlier. I suggest that getting back to me was what she proposed and didn't bother to do. The repair man arrived before 1..he was nice. If I were looking for repairs without a landlord in the middle I wouldn't use this place or recommend it to anyone. They treat us as complete strangers, need to charge for diagnosis even though they have failed to fix the same microwave twice. Won't show up for a least one week, each time. Had what seemed a peculiar problem with a cooktop: fuses blowing, breaker tripping and unhappy tenants who couldn't rely on their stove. An appliance tech from another local business looked at it and said we needed an electrician. Called a trusted electrician and he pronounced the issue as being part of the appliance. Frustrated, I called Handy, at the electrician's recommendation, and Craig came out - on time - quickly sussed the problem and repaired it on the spot. I found Craig to be knowledgeable, professional, courteous, and good humoured. Our tenants, international visitors unfamiliar with local in-home repair practices, were pleased with his quick work as well as his overall manner. read more

I bought a fridge from these guys 8 years ago. The experience was so terrible, yelp was not as active back then -- but here's what I remember: I bought a Fisher Paykel fridge and had it delivered. When it was delivered, the door was scratched. There were multiple phone calls and emails back and forth with Handy, long story short, I ended up calling Fisher Paykel to replace their doors instead, since Handy was useless and unhelpful. I never got an apology or follow up from Handy. Thankfully as the fridge was brand new, F&P said the service was covered under warranty and didn't charge me. Got some excellent advice from the parts department that allowed me to avoid buying a $50 tool that it turned out wasn't necessary for disassembling my hood fan. This is great customer service as the easy and profitable thing for Handy would have been to order the tool for me. I will definitely turn to Handy for parts and when it comes time to purchase appliances again. read more

The review of Lynne P. that spoke of shady business practices is correct. I went in to find type S 15 amp fuses, which I was having difficulty finding. They had them, but sensed that I needed them badly, and charged me $9 apiece, or more than $20 after tax for two fuses. I felt I had been taken, and found them for less than half the price at Kerrisdale Lumber ($8 plus tax for a package of two). I went to return them the very next day, but Handy Appliances said they would not accept returns. They were still in the original unopened plastic packaging. I had to make a scene to get them to take them back. Finally they did, but they charged a 25% restocking fee. read more

I dealt with Deep last summer. He was incredibly nice when I first met him. I had gone in to check out apartment sized stacking washer and dryer. He seemed to know his appliances and was great to deal with. I went back to him to see if he could match the lower price. He was once again accommodating and he offered me a lower price plus better service. I went to Edmonds Appliance and spoke with them and they lowered their price. Edmonds is also closer to where I live and I have dealt with them prior. They have always been great. I called Deep to let him know that I was given a better offer and he was not happy with me. He said that he would not give me a better offer but would give me better service. Unfortunately there is no way to measure or guarantee good service. When I told him that I was going to go with the lower offer, he became rude and told me that I had wasted his time. He actually sent me an very rude text which I deleted. I wish that I had kept it so that I could have posted it. I am very happy that I did not buy from Handy Appliance. I do not know what kind of service that I would have received after purchase and if I had a problem with the appliances. Just beware. I am so glad that I bought from Edmonds Appliance again. I had a problem with my Frigidaire range while still under warranty. I contacted Frigidaire and they told me that Handy Appliances was one of their in-warranty repair service providers in Vancouver. I was a little nervous given some of the other reviews, but the overall experience was excellent. Fixing the problem required two visits: the first to confirm the faulty part; the second a week later, after the part had been ordered and arrived, to replace it. Very efficient and friendly both times, and they had no problem ordering the part promptly after the first visit. They even squeezed in the part replacement visit before the Thanksgiving long weekend, which was great. Four stars instead of five only because I did have to follow-up a couple of times, once to confirm they had received my proof-of-purchase info, and again to confirm whether the replacement part they ordered had arrived -- but that aside, a very positive experience. read more
