That journey has included frustrations, disappointments, and occasional epiphanies. Thankfully, Conheads Men's Grooming is a welcome reprieve from the bad haircuts and inconsistent barbers and wins my vote in multiple categories. Location: The barbershop is located on Antique Row right across from Maryland General Hospital and a few storefronts up the street from the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center. Phaze 10 recently opened in the area and Land of Kush is within easy walking distance. The light rail is literally right in front of the shop. Street parking requires some thought, but I always find a spot on Eutaw Street and walk over to the shop. Ambience: It's clear that the owner(s) went the extra mile and put thought into the overall design. There's a lounge area up front, an outdoor courtyard out back, and a consistent gentlemen's lounge theme throughout. There's also a decent reading selection and soul music classics are always playing in the background. Service: For $23, you get a shampoo/wash, haircut, shave, and a complimentary beverage choice of water or wine. There's also an esthetician on staff who provides additional services by appointment. Most importantly, I find all the barbers to be very personable and welcoming, extending "hello," "come back again," and "thank you". Neutral Space: Okay, I might be pushing it a bit here, but oblige me. Black barbershops are normally ground zero for loaded, politically charged conversations on identity politics, religion, sexual relations, interpersonal relations, personal preferences, and a whole range of unsolicited social commentary. In my experience, Conheads is a pretty neutral space and I usually leave feeling relaxed and renewed as opposed to tense and offended. Well done!

My first impression was negative and I should have walked out right then: the barber's cape. This thing was CRUUUUSTY. Tored up a bit at the neck and with residues of many other people's DNA around the neck Then there was the issue of the roughness. It felt like I was in a boxing match, with my head being knocked around every other way with his hands and the machines he was using. About the cut itself, Mr. Ray basically did whatever he wanted. He Give me a "conservative gent's" cut, as he called it: not nearly as much as I requested him to cut. And the cherry on top: when shaving the back of my neck (with trimmer) it felt as if he was doing it with needles and knives, with the end result being huge, raised, furious RED WELTS on my neck that I still have three days later. So bad that I have been applying antibiotics to them. In conclusion, if what you enjoy is a dirty, incredibly overpriced, Rough, underwhelming, and potentially infectious haircut, then Sugar Ray (and this place) is your man.

Killa Kutz had availability so I was in luck. 1 With The Grain Barbershop sits in the cut but it was very easy to find. There was ample street parking so parking wasn't an issue. Once inside, Killa Kutz was on time and I was in the chair at my confirmed appointment time. I told Killa Kutz how I like my line and let him do his thing. When it was time to look in the mirror... I was beyond happy. My line was perfect. There were no issues. My line wasn't pushed, and most of all, he took care of my face. From the shampoo to the after spray, Killa Kutz was spot on with everything. If you're in the market for a new barber or just need a cut, check out Killa Kutz at 1 With The Grain Barbershop.

I don't know what kind of scam this place is trying to run but it's disgusting. As you can see in the photos the products have been used and there is even hair and debris in some of them. The powders were all empty, and the jars all had chunks missing out of them. When I reached out to their store, they tried to gaslight me into thinking I didn't know the powders would be light. I even sent photos to their email to which they just responded that they were going to send a return label. No offer to re-send new product, nothing. I've never received such poor service from a store. How bad does an establishment have to be to allow their employees (intentional or not) to pack returned/used items to fulfill an order. This whole situation is so bizarre. Never again.

This review is based solely on what occurred…read more We entered Empire Cutz, signed in correctly, and waited. For 30 minutes, we were not acknowledged at all--no greeting, no update, no communication. During this time, there were multiple barbers not actively cutting hair, so this was not a matter of the shop being overwhelmed. When we decided to leave, there was conversation about us in Spanish rather than direct communication. After we exited, our names were scratched off the list, as if we had never been there. This is not about impatience or wait time. It's about being ignored despite staff availability. We are returning customers who have recommended this shop before, and this experience did not align with a 4.9 rating. ****** updated review based on response from business ****** Your response does not change what occurred. I am a long-standing, returning client and am fully familiar with your sign-in process and posted policies. During this visit, I directly observed barbers complete services, step away from their chairs, and engage in side conversations rather than acknowledge me. I was also clearly aware of being observed instead of addressed. This was not a misunderstanding of procedure; it was a lapse in professionalism and basic customer engagement. Whether the wait was 14 minutes or 30 is irrelevant. The issue was the complete absence of acknowledgment or communication, which is unacceptable in any service business. I consider this matter closed. I will not be returning, and I trust this feedback will be used to correct the experience for future clients.
