Came here today for a polish change and pedicure and while the pedicure is a 4/5 stars (nails weren't cut the right shape but I should have been more clear to her) the polish change is horrible. Totally understand the routine of a polish change - simple nail filing, no cuticle cutting, etc etc - but this was by far the worst polish change I've ever gotten. The tops of the nails are thicker than the rest, the entire nail isn't covered, she didn't clean up any of the excess nail polish on my skin, and the overall nail color is so streaky. It's hard to rate because this is my local spot. Not even a block from my house. The husband & wife owners always wave hello when I walk by and call me by name. THEN I had a fateful night...6:45pm I was seated upstairs in the 2nd to last chair. I was going on a 25 minute wait, silently waiting with my feet in a luke warm plastic lined bowl. Finally my 'treatment' begins, an older woman who I haven't encountered before gets to work. I used to go...eh, to be fair at least once a month for a solid 16 months. This was my 1st time back in a while. I sit calmly while the lady is rushing, short quick strokes, slight hints of nail (should have been a sign) to complete my calf rub. She glances at the clock, it's 7:35pm, she urgently wants to begin my manicure. She finishes my pedi, they look cute! All is going as planned until she begins my mini 'complimentary back/neck massage'. I usually like a deep tissue massage, but deep into the muscle not on the surface. She was using a new technique, something I've never felt before. She kept going back to the neck, repeating what felt like pinching. I was weary but it didn't last more than 5 min so I sat through it. Okay finally 8:10pm & say my thank you's & head home. Within the hour, I put my hair in a ponytail. Horrified I am staring at my neck through the mirrors. What on EARTH did this woman DO to me?! That is not a 'technique' that was torture. It's three solid lines of broken blood vessels! It's a gawd awful sight, & I am scared. What is all that blood? Does it have long term effects? Will it go away? How soon? I sleep on it & go back 1st thing in the AM. Its 9am, before they open for business. His employee is asking me if I want a mani/pedi? I see the owner & he hardly looks moved. Rubs it & says, 'ah it's okay now?'. I try to explain in simple English that this is unacceptable. This woman should NEVER do this to someone else! He nods & says ok. By far, the worst manicure and pedicure I have ever had. First of all, the chairs are so worn, the neck pillow area is nearly flat to the chair. Okay- I can deal with that. However, these chairs don't have traditional pedicure bowls. Instead, they have plastic buckets (seriously) that they fill with water from the tap - aka FREEZING COLD. They are on a stand that's on wheels that has a small padded bar for you to prop your feet on while they get painted. Now. When I say on wheels, that means you must hold your legs in a bent position or else the cart/bar whatever-the-hell it is pushes away from you and your feet are left dangling. Maybe that's why they don't let you soak, and they pumice your feet DRY. No lotion, no scrub. Nada. The pedicurist couldn't keep track of what she was doing so she did one coat of polish on some nails and 3 on others. She managed to get the polish EVERYWHERE. My feet don't look any better than they did going in AND they now have smeared pink polish all over my skin. For my gel manicure, again, no soak, dry cuticle trimming and a cluster fluck with the polish. She cut my nails down so short that I am in pain now. She too (different woman than the lady giving the pedi) managed to get black smeared all over my hands too!! Not to mention - one manicurist had her SCREAMING baby in the salon the entire time. All in all, this was the worst salon experience I have ever had and would encourage you to go anywhere but here as it was not only not pleasant, but it was in fact miserable. read more

Orly is the worst brand, refusal Orly nail polish chips within the day I get my nails done. I stopped using it and was very hesitate about using the gel... The nail technician said it was popular and it was good. Nope! Terrible! It shouldn't be chipping within a wk n now I have had it a wk n it's chipping in the ends like normal nail polish would... I have been coming to this salon for five years based on the recommendation of a friend who was a longtime Cow Hollow/Marina resident. When I first moved to the city, I shopped around a bit, but no one has ever matched the excellent customer service of the Hand Touch team. You can count on a thorough job every time. I am one of many loyal regulars here, all who the staff remembers by name. My regular manicures last 2+ weeks. This is a hardworking team and I've seen them take walk-ins close to closing many a time. I like this little spot mainly because the people working are just so damn nice. There are plenty of chairs and I've never had an issue walking in and sitting right down. There's also a rotating neck and shoulder massage person which is a nice little bonus. It's also unexpected and $10 bucks for 10 min. Par for the course. I don't get any nail polish so I'm usually in/out within 15-20 minutes and am impressed with the quality and cleanliness. That's key when going to a nail salon, it's gotta be clean! They have nice massage chairs that are operational and everything else you'd expect from a competing nail spot on chestnut street. I asked for short acrylic almond shape nails and ended up getting horrific uneven nails that were glued on upward! For $55 dollars!!! Pictures speak for themselves. They said they knew how to do coffin shape. I showed her pictures to make sure. This is not coffin shaped. 4 of my nails point in different directions and the buffing left my nails all lumpy not to mention each one is a different length (see thumb picture for example) and shape is the opposite of sharp and flattering. Overall each nail looks like it belongs on a different hand and not one nail was done properly but what the worst part is, is that I had to wait a solid 2.5 hours for this trash. They took my polish off and then left me in the chair for over an hour before working on me again. They kept taking customers telling them they had space not giving an estimate of when they would be seen and leaving customers sitting for 45 minutes minimum. In the process of trying to see every customer they could regardless of respecting the time of that person, it left each worker rushing and leaving horrific results. read more

I want to like this place, I really do. I have had good pedis here before, but what I experienced today is just not OK! I went in at my lunch break, asked how long the wait was. The girl told me there was no wait. I brought my own polish because I am a nail polish junky and am always scared salons add random crap to their polish (and this place does, one look at the labels and I know the colors are not what they should be). They sat me down and had me soak my feet. 30 minutes later, still soaking. Ok, its lunch hour. I asked how long the wait would be because I didn't have time to wait. If you don't have anyone to work on me, tell me so, and I will go elsewhere. Eventually a lady came out and started working on my feet. When it came time to remove my glitter polish, she started to FILE it off. OK, you don't need to know a lot about nails to know filing polish off is bad! I get that removing glitter polish is a pain in the rear, but guess what? You did my toes. If you don't want to take the time to remove glitter properly, how about not offering glitter? I told her to soak cotton in acetone and leave it on my nails a minute and it would remove easier, but she told me no. I should have walked out. She finished filing off the polish, and as expected, left huge scuff marks all over my nails. I don't really care about the scuffs, as long as the polish covers them, but I had chosen a sheer polish. She did 2 coats and you could still see the scuffs. A third would have helped, but she insisted it wouldn't. Getting annoyed, she went to the polish rack, chose a bright pink and, without asking me, painted one of my big toes bright pink. UH NO. If i wanted a bright pink, I would not have chosen a sheer. And, if I am going to have a bright color on my nails, I am going to be the one to pick it! I told her "no, too pink. if you won't do a third coat of the sheer, I will just choose a darker color." She ushered me to the polish rack and I hastily chose a blue. I assumed she would remove the pink, or at least the one nail with bright pink on it, but nope. painted the blue directly over the pink. One coat of blue, didn't even bother to do a second. Before I knew what she was doing, she was top coating my toes. So here I have bright blue patchy toe nails, when all I wanted were subtle toes. i was less than thrilled, but honestly, I was ready to just deal with it and get back to work. I sat there for a minute before asking the owner (who sat next to me and watched the entire thing) if I could pay. He took my money (I should have refused my money), and yanked out the tissue between my toes. In the process of him yanking it out he smudged the polish. I asked him if I could have a top coat to fix it (I was happy to do it myself at this point), and he told me no. I could have sat there and argued, demanded my money back, but instead I decided to just take it to Yelp. So, eff you, Hand Touch. Seriously, a 5 year old could have done a better job, or at least have been less rude. read more

Hand Touch has moved across the street since I first started going there, so ignore my original comment about an upstairs area. Also it seems to me that they're no longer terribly pushy about upgrading you to a longer massage. This continues to be my fave place in SF. Regular mani/pedi price is now $25, and for a gel mani, regular pedi it comes to $45. Many of the technicians are the same as 6 years ago when I started going to Hand Touch, and they always greet me warmly, which is nice. This is your normal nail place, but the pricing is great for being in this area. After dinner tonight at A16 I thought that I would like to browse around for a decent priced nail place. I was going to wait until Thursday when I go to South Bay for a nice mani & pedi that my sis recommends.. but it was time! My nails are super long and beautiful but they need to be cut because, as my sister phrases it... "they are getting scary!" She runs away when I try to scratch or gently put them on her skin O=) What are siblings for! Since I felt that she needed some time before she should drive since she just had a glass of wine... we popped in here because I saw that the price was only $20 for a mani and pedi... not bad for here... although I can get it for $13 in LA... yes a MANI AND A PEDI for that price O=) There was a lot of people and then I asked how long the wait is... they said they had more space upstairs and to pick my color... so I did.. they never really answered how long the wait is... TRICKY! lol which I am not surprised since they want your money. I went upstairs and sat down waiting for someone to help me... the guy came up to ask if I wanted anything to drink... I said, "No, thank you." They seemed friendly. He eventually came by with the water to soak the feet. Then came more waiting. Eventually they got to me and I don't really like how they cut my nails. The woman who did my feet did not really listen to me. I asked her to make sure that my big toe is cut on both sides b/c I feel that is more comfortable. She sorta did it on one-side. I was too lazy to argue with her. **I am such a push over!** She did do a longer massage on my feet/legs, which was not bad... not that I like massages but I thought about how others might enjoy this. ^_^ Then another lady eventually came to cut my nails on my hand. They commented on how nice they were and super long. So I showed her how long I wanted... she didn't soak them first and just snipped away. The way she was cutting them, I was afraid she would break or chip them since my nails are super durable. She snapped it from the middle and they flew EVERY WHERE! I was thinking in my head.. OMG! You should be so careful. They are so long and it's dangerous where they might land! I turned my eyes away sort of because I don't want them to hit me. Of course she did it half-@$$ed and on my left thumb.. the longest nail.. she totally snapped it and it was sooo short, which upset me! I don't want them to be super short but a decent length since they will grow back soon. I was already sad enough to cut the beautiful nails that I took such good care of! =*( She did give a massage on the hands and forearm. What surprised me was that they gave a small massage on your neck and shoulder for free, which is a first without paying extra! I will give them a point for that, even though I detest massages but I know that a lot of people would have really liked this. For $20 it's not a bad deal and they have a lot of nice colors to choose from. Shhhhhh.. Don't tell anyone, as this is one of my neighborhood secrets but this place is great! Out of all of the 100-odd neighborhood nail places in the Marina, this is my absolute favorite. Friendly Staff, Cozy Decor, Clean Equipment (veerrryyy important) and awesome manis & pedis, all for $20. The messages are soothing and the nail work lasts forever! Seriously, a manicure will last like a week. The one complaint I would have is perhaps the wait, and when busy they don't always give accurate ETA chair times, but that in and of itself is a testament to their popularity. This place is a good size nail salon since it has an upstair, but it doesn't look clean when you walk in. It also feels a bit cramped, not much space to walk. If you're looking for a place to relax this is NOT the place. I would go to Ciao Bella across the street, even though they are usually pretty full as well, but they just have a nicer feel to it with the big windows. Usually they do a decent job, but today was awful. =( My friend already had her pedicure started while I continued to wait even though we said we wanted to sit and get our nails done together. By the time she was done with her pedicure was when they sat me down and started my manicure. We started our mani together and for some reason I was done 15 mins before her!! I later realize it's because they skipped cutting my cuticles!!! Plus i hate that they ask you to pay before they are done applying your polish. I was also rushed out of my seat after they applied the polish. Jeeze, what kind of service is that? I have been a loyal customer to Hand Touch for 6+ years but have had my final straw. While this is your standard budget mani/pedi spot, prices have been raised across the board, wait times get out of control and grossly misquoted, and service quality is far from consistent. Annoyingly, tips are no longer allowed to be added on a credit card (cash only). So they shoo you off to their expensive ATM or you have to trudge down the street and return. I had a horrible experience where gel was applied and did not adhere smoothly so they attempted to just scrape it all off with a file. Only after I insisted on using the proper acetone remover (and nix the whole process since I was way over the quoted time) did they oblige and then send me on my way - paying full price with gouged up and unpainted nails. Certain nail techs are so sweet and impeccably thorough which pains me to write negatively... But I'll be taking my routine business elsewhere. read more

That is really the only good thing I can say about my experience here, is that I was in and out fast. Had a gel manicure done, $20+ tip. The lady who helped me worked quickly, and it felt like it was heading in a good direction, until I left and noticed little bumps and bubbles under the polish. Ok, not super noticeable, I just need this to last because it's expensive to get re-done. It's been 4 days, and the polish is lifting and peeling off. Really? Did she even try to seal the ends? I LOVE this place! $20 for a mani/pedi? Yes, please! The girls here are very attentive and will remember you if you come back more than once (It was a couple weeks since I have been and asked where I was!) It is rather "no frills" but they have a wide selection of colors (both OPI and Essie (I prefer the latter, chips less...)) and a lot of gossip magazines to browse through. Thristy? They will keep you hydrated with tea and water. I've also had the best eyebrow wax I've had a LOOONG time. I'm Sicilian so you can imagine the eyebrow situation I have going on. I believe it was Fong who waxed my brows and they honestly did a better job than benefit and most 5 stars spas I've been to and for half the price.
