Picked up a grilled pork and rice plate and summer roll and literally it was just a minute from when I placed my order and they called out my number. Maybe it was because they were closing in 45 minutes or just amazingly efficient. It was still warm when got it home and very tasty. I do like their summer rolls but truth be told, if they had fried spring rolls, I would be there every day. I just wish they were open later than 9pm. Wait times are by and large pretty fast; however, on occasion, the kitchen can be overloaded with orders and things can take time. I make it a point to try new restaurants in New York as much as I can, but I just can't stop coming back to Hanco's. My boyfriend and I discovered this gem a few months ago thanks to Scoutmob. It's our #1 lunch destination now and we don't even live in the neighborhood. (Yet. There's serious talk of moving to Park Slope, and the time we've spent there following meals at Hanco's is responsible for it.) I always get the tofu banh mi, medium spicy. I had the full spicy my first time and it was pretty delicious until the last couple bites. I guess all the spicy mayo sank to the bottom and upon taking my last bites I literally felt like I had gotten some sort of chemical burn on and in my mouth. I'm no wuss either, I love me some spicy food. Hanco's definitely beats out copycat Henry's down the block. (NPR even did a bit about the blatant rip off: http://ny.eater.com/tags/hancos) I'm ashamed to admit that I did try Henry's once out of curiosity, and although they offer more fake meat options (Hanco's only has fake pork), it just wasn't as delicious as trusty Hanco's. Also, Henry's seating area is tiny and it just generally lacks the friendly and comfortable atmosphere that Hanco's offers. Perhaps most importantly, the bubble tea at Henry's wasn't as good. The almond bubble tea tasted pretty much like plain milk, and my boyfriend didn't much like his coconut bubble tea (although I did. It tasted more like natural coconut milk and less like artificial flavoring. Just a matter of preference, I think.) Hanco's sandwiches are a dollar or so more expensive, but it's worth it. The classic Vietnamese sandwich I ordered--which comes with pork, mayo, cucumber, carrot, and cilantro--was delicious! Definitely in the top tier of bahn mi sandwiches I've had. The pork was really juicy and the sandwich itself was really flavorful. I had a bit of a hard time eating the sandwich because the baguette was overflowing, but that is what makes a great sandwich right? It's gotta be a bit messy. In terms of the environment, the place was pretty clean and I had no problems finding a seat, although it was a bit early for the dinner crowd (like 5:30ish when I went). This is my favourite place for cheap eats in Boerum Hill. The sandwiches are terrific and the pho is not too bad. I'm raving about Hanco's because the vegetarian selection is so terrific. The veggie chicken is second to none; the veggie pork is damned tasty, too. (The tofu is only-so so.) Bonus: ask for your bahn mi on whole what. Not traditional, but delicious. I had the original banh mi and the Thai iced tea. Wasn't expecting the sandwich to be stuffed with minced marinated pork since at least from my past experience, it's stuffed with variety of hams. Overall though quite tasty! The bread was very very crispy which I loved, flavors were great. Just one thing I wish was that they arranged the ingredients in the sandwich better. All the veggies are all on one side and the meat on the other. Kind of have to have a bite of each side for a balanced mix. The Thai iced tea was refreshing and not too sweet. It could be I haven't had pork in a while, but bf and I shared a pork sandwich after a long day and it was exactly what we needed. Bread was crusty and delicious. Pork was well flavored and I really couldn't get enough of those daikons. We didn't ask for spicy because we were both a little sick, but I added sirracha afterwards and it was great. First things first they have the right hoisin sauce which is extremely important to me. My biggest complaint is that the vermicelli bowls do not come with summer roles, those cost extra. Decided to eat here today to taste what all the buzz was about. Approaching the store I saw a B-grade from the health department but still went inside following my gut (or hunger). I wanted to try something semi healthy and new, so I ordered the vegetarian chicken sandwich with medium spicy option. Included inside the French baguette was the veggie chicken, mayo, butter, cucumber, picked carrots & daikon radish and cilantro. As far as the spice, they added sriracha sauce (instead of the usual jalapeno peppers that traditional Vietnamese sandwiches add). Overall my experience was positive. I've had the classic and grilled pork sandwiches. The classic comes with ground pork and tasted ok. It's definitely not a traditional Vietnamese sandwich. The grilled pork tasted closer to the real thing. However, I don't like the way the sandwich is constructed: the meat is on the inside and veggies on top, so it's hard to get a bit of everything in one bite. I also think the sandwich is overpriced- I usually pay $6 for the real thing. The Vietnamese iced coffee doesn't taste as strong and authentic either. I wouldn't get it here again. I come here fairly often as it is really good and really fresh and for some reason I prefer this location over the park slope location. It is newer and more modern. The sandwiches are always made the way you want it with a lot of options. They have whole or white bread. You can also tell them to limit the amount of dairy (I didn't even know there was butter and mayonnaise on the sandwich is) and then you choose the level of spiciness that you want. The Bahn Mi are definitely the star of the show but they also have really good Bubble tea if you're into that sort of thing. You order and then wait for your food to be called with a number. There are a decent amount of tables but I tend to get my food to go because it's a pretty easy food to eat while you're walking. They also have good summer rolls but I stopped getting those because I find they are quite expensive for not a whole lot of food. I actually feel like the prices here are a little bit more than the park slope location possibly because of higher rent prices -that's my only guess. I dined in and their kitchen staff propped the doors open three times while they restocked their kitchen with supplies. I closed it the first time because it was around 29 degrees outside and the restaurant was already cold. When they saw me closing it, they looked like they wanted to fight me. for New York... this is the BEST spicy tofu banh mi i've had. kudos to the quality and SPICINESS!! my lips were burning for a couple of hours. service is quick like a deli and there's a seating area for you to devour your banh mi. the bubble tea here is a disappointment, though. very watery and the boba isn't cooked enough. i like my boba sweet and soft/chewy... but this tapioca didn't have that quality. i actually don't like the pricing here too much, either... but it's New York... what do you expect? i'm used to paying $2.50 in Seattle! oh well. read more

As much as I'd like to stay out of the local debate that has developed for Banh Mi in the Boerum Hill area, I feel that I can't write this review without doing so. There's just no going around it; especially since I visited and reviewed the competition just a few days ago. So here it is. Hanco's vs. Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches. Round One. I'd already been contemplating when I would be able to make an excuse to come to Hanco's. There was no better excuse than coming home from a hike on Bear Mountain and toughing it out through 2 hours of traffic. Just think of it as a reward for my workout and aggravation. When I walked up to Hanco's, I half expected a cramped and stuffy interior environment. Well I got the cramped part correct but it was surprising temperate inside. Look what Nicky's has done to me. It's scarred me for life for every Banh Mi place I visit. There were several tables set up inside and a single table outside for people to sit and enjoy their sandwiches. The problem is there are just so many people coming in that standing room starts to get limited. It's a testament to the popularity of a Hanco's Banh Mi in the neighborhood. I ordered for myself a Classic Sandwich - Spicy for $5.50, which is their take on the tradition Banh Mi sandwich. My order came a few minutes later. According to their menu the Classic contains all the ingredients in your normal Banh Mi but I also noticed they included the word butter in the middle of the list. That seemed a bit odd to me, although I didn't exactly taste any butter. The sandwich at Hanco's is slightly bigger than the one at Nicky's. I believe the meat ration is the actually the about same and they just stuff plenty more of the pickled veggies in. They also stuffed plenty of cilantro into the Banh Mi. Some people might appreciate the extra cilantro but I'm not a fan of cilantro. Another noticeable difference in a Hanco's Banh Mi is the bread. The exterior was nice and crispy but the inside was soft and fluffy; a little too soft and fluffy in my opinion. When taking a bite, bread on the inside tore off much like you get when you bite into a croissant that's been sitting out for a bit. I didn't like that part either. But they did get my order right and gave it to me spicy. Mmm.. spicy. Hanco's also serves a big list of drink items. I was thinking of ordering a bubble tea until I observed a mother and daughter leave with their drinks only to return a minute later saying their bubble tea (made with milk and sweet ingredients) came out sour. I'm not sure if they said the tapioca was sour or the drink itself. It was enough to make me decide to steer clear of the drinks. I think Hanco's might be a family owned and run establishment. I took a look at the back where the sandwiches were being made. From what I can tell it seemed like my order was taken by the oldest daughter and her two younger sisters were in the back making drinks/sandwiches. Dad was making sandwiches and serving tables. Even grandma was getting in on the action cooking up the meat. That was kind of cute. It was an "aww" moment. And they were actually Vietnamese; I even listened closely to see how they spoke to each other. Ok, so lets break it down and see the results of the debate. Comfortable customer waiting area - Neither Nicky's is really hot and stuffy while Hanco's is really cramped Bigger Sandwich - Hanco's Cilantro Situation - Nicky's The Bread - Nicky's Correct Orders - Hanco's Authentic Viet - Hanco's Price - Nicky's Well it looks like I have a tie from my breakdown. Why can't Hanco's be like Starbucks and be on every street corner in DC??? Every time I visit my sister in Brooklyn, I have to get my Hanco's fix at least twice before coming back to DC where Hanco's is but a dream! The vegetarian chicken sandwich on the whole wheat baguette is pretty much the equivalent to pure ecstasy. The bread is always fresh and hearty, the fake chicken tastes so realistic and has an unbelievable texture and the carrots and cilantro give a wonderful cooling effect to the hot and spicy peppers and seasoning. It's absolutely to die for and the best hangover cure! This location is so convieniant to lots of shops, bars and is right next to the train. The classic bahnmi hit all the right taste buds and the beef pho had the most glorious tendon pieces, possibly the most beautiful pieces I have ever seen. My buddy ordered the grilled pork sandwich which had plenty of meat, but was apparently an afterthought compared to the Classic. I was not a fan of the shrimp spring rolls, not sure what was wrong with them--maybe too many noodles and not enough cilantro? And the sauce was too peanutty. However overall, the meal was aces, it was freezing cold outside so just what I needed. A tad overpriced, but given no other vietnamese options nearby, willing to pay.
