After years of strong winds, the big storm back in June was the final straw for my roof. Lost too many shingles and had too many seals broken to have another "patching" done on my roof. Based on positive reviews posted by members of various local Facebook groups, I contacted Roof Doctor. Response from Chris Olsen of Roof Doctor was immediate. He came out to conduct an inspection of my roof within a day of me calling, I think he might have even come out the same day I called. Chris fully explained everything he found - and in terms a non-roofing person could understand. I provided Chris with the pertinent information about my insurance company. Chris handled EVERYTHING with my insurance company, keeping me informed throughout the entire process. During the few days Chris was out of town, he made sure there was another Roof Doctor representative available in case I had any questions. As one might expect, the insurance company needed more information from what was originally submitted and there were a few hoops that needed to be jumped through primarily due to Chris recommending a total roof replacement. I can't blame the insurance company as part of their job is to ensure repair costs are legitimate so they can keep their payout costs as low as possible. Keeping payout costs down helps the overall cost of insurance for all of their customers. Ever since moving my insurance over to AARP Hartford, I have been extremely pleased with the cost and service Hartford has provided. I started with better coverage for lower pricing on both my homeowner's and vehicle insurance than what I had with my previous insurance company. The damage to my roof needed to be repaired but the roof was still capable of protecting the house until all the paperwork could be completed and repairs made. None of these delays put my house in danger of having the roof leak. During his inspection, Chris specifically looked for any area that might leak and assured me that if we had another major windstorm before everything was approved, he would come out to inspect the roof and would secure a tarp over any problem areas. From experience, he knew that by recommending a complete roof replacement, it might take a bit longer to get the final insurance approval. Once my insurance gave their OK to proceed with the total roof replacement, Chris scheduled a crew to come out. The crew was prompt and friendly. They worked hard and completed a thorough clean up at the end of each day's work. Roof Doctor's goal was to ensure a quality repair for the lowest costs possible. Their final cost figures even came in lower than originally projected. If you need your roof repaired/replaced, you can't do any better than going with Roof Doctor.

One or two of our neighbors had used VIP for roofing jobs, and were pleased with their prices and work. VIP was below the price quoted by the other two companies who bid our job. Travis, their estimator, went up on the roof with me, the homeowner, and also checked in the attic to verify how the old roof had been done, recommending OSB plywood sheathing over the 1 X 8 boards that had been used on the original roof to make the roof stronger, and more resistant to earthquake damage. He explained how the work should be done for a quality job, and the shingles he recommended (CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles) which are one of the higher quality shingles on the market. As we couldn't begin the roof work until the roof had been tied down into the unreinforced bricks in the outer walls of the home, VIP couldn't begin work until the tie-down had been completed. The other contractor was slow getting tot he job for various reasons; Travis stayed in touch with us as we updated him on the tie-down job, and had his crew come immediately as soon as the other contractor was done, though that meant working in October when it was rainy and cold. We shared hot chocolate and cookies on the colder wetter days with the crew. We were impressed with Andres and his two brothers and their helper who showed up to do the work. They worked very hard and fast from morning until dark, twice working until past dark with lights to finish the work needed for that day. They were respectful, responsive, and cleaned up well. Andres spoke some English, and was patient with me as I used what Spanish I knew. I probably should have suggested a written contract for the work; we didn't use one, We would hire VIP again. They were patient, flexible on scheduling,, and all their people, from their office billing agent, to their estimator and their roofing crew were good to work with.

It is attached to our house and is a low pitch roof about 7' off the ground. I am over 70 years old and figured that my neighbor (that I personally don't know) had checked out the company. I had one of the company employees named Travis come out and quoted me $1,850.00 to reroof, take the old roofing materials off and also replace a 2' strip of plywood the length of the roof. I had them do it. A couple of my friends said that I was ripped off because that was way too much money. It took one of their guys less than a day to do it. I called the sales person and explained that I was told that I was overcharged and the guy said that he was offended that I was questioning his integrity. He said that twice. I said I wanted to be treated fairly and not be taken advantage of with me being a senior citizen. He finally said that he would have someone at the company review it and get back to me. When a sales person says they are offended by a customer questioning treatment and charges, that raised a red flag with me. I then researched and called a well reviewed roofing company and without explaining what I went through, I asked for a ball park quote for what we needed. I was shocked to be told a price of $600 to $850 less. I then explained my situation to him. He had empathy for me but suggested that I review VIP Roofing in a number of places to warn other people. UPDATE. There was no company review and Travis sent me this text about a week later..."Good morning Ed. I ran a job cost for your job. With a couple of less hours for Enrique and some materials he had from another job, the new total cost is $1700. I'll have my office manager send a new invoice." I certainly feel taken advantage of and will post this sad tale in a few places. If you are reading this Caveat Emptor-buyer beware.

There were numerous problems from the beginning with coordination of products, timing of installation, etc. I would attribute them mainly to a lack of ongoing communication with the owner of Shaw Roofing, who seemed to want to blame all of this on me. His crew left some components of the job unfinished, when the owner could have easily contacted me by phone to determine how I wished to proceed. I have now contracted with someone I else I trust to complete the job. I paid the original down payment and final original estimate in full before being billed an additional 10% of the project cost for "unforeseen expenses." The original estimate was very high but I trusted them to do it professionally. I'm sure the roof itself is fine but it's the other things that I expected in order to be a satisfied customer. The nails had pulled through the shingles or were no longer attached to the roof plywood. I reached out to Rich Johnson, General Manager of Superior Home Improvement. He offered me two options. 1. Just fix what was damaged. We would remain vulnerable to future windstorms. The next storm might do more shingle damage including internal water damage 2. Replace the whole roof and install it right; thus, I would be protected for decades to come. After weighing these choices, we decided to replace the whole roof. They would use a higher standard of workmanship and shingle quality than the original roofing sub-contractor used in 2007. He gave me an honest and fair estimate. I then reached out to another roof company and their estimate was initially $13,000 more than Rich's quote. But then they kept discovering new discounts to offer and us a lower price, until it was only $8,000 higher than Rich's. We decided to go with Superior Home Improvement Rich Johnson promised things and delivered them. 1. He promised he would work with my HOA to get approval on the roof shingles color (Quarry Gray, which I loved) and he did. 2. He gave me a date that his crew would start, and they did. They stayed working on my roof, until it was finished. They got it done in just two days. I was impressed by the workmanship they exhibited and glad that I made the choice to go with Rich Johnson. He is a hardworking, "down to earth" principled businessman with integrity.
