It's been a while since my last visit to Hanbop, and after my recent visit, I now want to go more regularly! I was able to go in during lunch to get the lunch special price. The price has gone up since I last posted a picture of the menu but I think that it is still SUCH a steal for the amount of food and quality. I ordered the beef short rib lunch special and was amazed by how much food arrived! The preview pic on the menu did not do the actual meal size justice. I was surprised by the amount of short rib pieces included as well as the variety of side dishes within the bento (fried shrimp, dumpling, some sort of fried roll, 2 pieces of another roll, 2 pieces fried chicken and soup). This is still separate from the regular banchan they provide! I really love their kimchi and potato salad. There are plenty of seats in the restaurant and parking spots in the plaza. There were a lot of solo diners at the time of my visit. The workers are friendly and quick with your order and refills. Can't wait to go back! read more

I have been on a Bibimbop eating streak of late...You must try this place in Lake Forest if you like Bibimbop. No need to go all the way to Irvine. It's situated in the same shopping center as Albertson's. The banchan (side dishes) served was delicious & just enough but you can always ask for more. Found this hole-in-the-wall spot and I was thoroughly impressed. It's one of the better local restaurants in this area when you're craving Asian food but don't want to make the drive to Irvine or Garden Grove. I also love that it's a local mom and pop shop. Always great to support small businesses. The restaurant itself was very clean and surprisingly spacious inside, which I really appreciated. Food Kapop A light crispy Korean fried chicken covered in a sweet chili sauce. The chicken itself was very crispy and well cooked, but the sauce was a little overly sweet for my taste. Still very decent overall. Galbi Very good. Nice char on the meat and it fell right off the bone. It actually reminded me a bit of Hawaiian style galbi. Soondubu tofu soup Solid. Comparable to some places that specialize in tofu soup. Banchan Okay. Probably my least favorite part of the meal. I usually prefer stronger pickled or gochugaru flavors, but I can't complain since it came with the meal. Purple rice Loved it. I wanted something healthier, lighter, and nutritionally balanced without it being a salad and found just what I needed from HanBop. I was in no mood of cooking on a crappy rainy day before Christmas. The lunch boxes were beautifully packaged and presented. It was such a feast too! I ordered the grilled salmon, bossam, and spicy pork lunch boxes. Each boxes came standard with the delicious soup, purple rice, and different varieties of pickled vegetables. Some contained fried gyoza and others had salad as accompaniments. The bossam came with enough toppings to wrap the clean tasting pork. Loved it. Can't believe each boxes were less than $19/box for the amount of food it arrived with. Such a steal given how filling everything was and fun to try little bits of everything. Lastly, the service was friendly and efficient during the pickup process. The inside of the restaurant was brightly lit, clean, and spacious. Authentic Korean restaurant in Lake Forest area. I give this place a high score in term of food quality, consistency, flavors and fast service. Its a small restaurant , very clean inside. My favorite dishes are tofu soup, cold noodle!!, kim chi fried rice. What I love about here is that they have purple rice ( not regular white rice like other tofu soup place). Love love this neighborhood Korean restaurant. Small restaurant tucked in the Albertsons Plaza. I especially love their weekday lunch special. A combination of different textures of food and each one is so delightful. They give you purple rice, a choice of meat, cones with a few different banchan, sald, soup and appetizers like tempura shrimp, fried seaweed roll & dumpling. The price is between $15 and up. Meats, banchan, rice, soup, salad. Perfect balance. You can mix and match your bite to your liking. I've gotten the spicy pork and kalbi here. The meats here are seasoned perfectly and cooked well. Spicy pork has enough spice for it to still be enjoyable. A surprising banchan you don't normally see or get at other restaurants is the pickled celery. What a nice crunch! Came here to grab a quick lunch on a weekday and took advantage of thier lunch specials offered between 11am-3pm Monday-Friday. I got the Marinated Salmon lunch special which resembled a bento box. It came with rice, 2 pieces of kimbap, tamagoyaki/rolled egg, salad and a few pieces of various fried goodies (dumpling, seaweed roll, and shrimp). I work at a dermatology office and one of the brand reps brought us HanBop bento boxes! She explained that this place was one of her favorite mom and pop shops and I can definitely see why. I had gotten the Marinated Salmon bento and it was to die for. The Salmon was cooked perfectly and the sides were amazing. I have been to places where the kimchi was too fresh but the one here was fermented perfectly. My absolute highlight of this bento box though was the soup! Holy it was so good and I just kept wanting more. I picked up some Galbi Tang for takeout because of the colder weather, and I really appreciated how thoughtful the packaging was. Everything was neatly arranged, and all the sides came together in one container with dividers, which kept things organized and ensured the takeout experience didn't feel any less special. The Galbi Tang itself was comforting, though I found it could have used just a touch more salt--it leaned a little bland--but it was easy to adjust at home. I'm definitely interested in coming back. I felt like the price and the amount of food were aligned. My wife and I thought in retrospect we would have order 1 combo cold noodle soup and a roll since we were both very full afterwards! We came for dinner at 6pm on a Friday evening and we beat the rush! We were hungry and got right to ordering the Medium Bossam (pork shoulder/belly), Mul Naengmyeon (cold noodles), BBQ short-ribs, and Hae Mul Pajeon (seafood pancake). Everything came out within 15 minutes and was fresh. Our favorites were the Mul Naengmyeon, as the broth was probably one of the best ones I have had in a while... (shout out to the mustard and vinegar). The Hae Mul Pajeon was AMAZING!! They served various cuts for the bossam ie. pork belly and shoulder. I personally enjoyed the porkbelly as they were more tender. The BBQ short ribs were just okay... we felt that the marinade was lacking or perhaps it wasn't marinaded long enough because it just wasn't that rich and juicy as others that I've had before. For the 4 of us, we did a pretty good job and had a few pieces of bossam left over. I think we could have ordered a small bossam and still would have been content with all the food that was served. The restaurant is clean and spacious. As we started our meal, the restaurant became busier, and by the time we left, they were nearly at full capacity. The sun was setting and we were sitting near the window. Thankfully, they had window shades and they closed them when the sun got too intense. However, the side door does not have shades, so try to sit away from that door if you will be eating close to sunset. BONUS: they accept the Lake Forest community gift card payments. My aunt loves this place and suggested that we meet here for dinner. I called to make reservations. We had 9 people for dinner on a Saturday night at 7pm so a reservation is a must! Our table was ready! So nice to get there early and not have to wait them for to push tables together. When we first arrived, it wasn't too crowded. The space is well lit and welcoming. Lots of Korean decor in the restaurant! The service was iffy. The roasted barley tea was barely lukewarm. We had to ask for hot tea. The banchan came out but we really could have used a third set. We only had 2 sets so the people at the ends really had to reach over for them. They also didn't refill the banchan either - you have to ask, even if the banchan bowls are empty. We ordered a little of everything: kalbi, soon tofu stew, kimchi jigae, nangmyun with kalbi, Dolsot bibimbop, hwe dol bop, and kalbi tang. I had a few bites of dolsot bibimbop and that was the best dish of the evening! Lots of great veggies piled on the rice on a sizzling stone platter. There was a nice crusty layer to the rice which was perfect! My kimchi jigae was good. Had maybe only 2 pieces of tofu, not as many as the picture on the menu. But had great flavor. We've been exploring the Lake Forest area more as they have a wide range of Asian food at a reasonable price you can't find around Mission Viejo. Hubby has a list of places to try and we made our way here to Hanbop. The menu boasts a wide range of categories from main entrees, special entrees, lunch specials, Korean street foods, Hanbop Rolls and side orders. Our first visit included the Mul Naengmyeon Combo with Kalbi, Padak and Egg Roll. The cold noodles were garnished with cucumbers, pickled radish, and hard boiled egg. They offer to cut the noodles and provide vinegar and mustard to season the broth if you choose. Super refreshing on a hot summer day and an exceptional pairing with the grilled kalbi. Hubby got the egg roll gimbap and padak as his meal. The padak is fried chicken seasoned with a sweet soy sauce and shredded green onions. The egg roll looks like an omelet with a cut of spam and pickled radish. Very simple meal and his go-to meal every visit. On our second visit, I gave their dolpan bibimbap a try since I was craving that crispy rice crust from their sizzling hot skillet. I chose the octopus as the protein, but I was pretty disappointed by the texture and flavor. The bibimbap was stacked with shredded carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, beansprouts and egg yolk. After mixing in the sauce and letting the rice sit, it was a little too greasy/oily for my preference and didn't get the scorched rice I was anticipating. I'm a native Korean, and today I experienced one of the finest bossam (Korean boiled pork) dishes I've ever had (the best in Irvine/Lake Forest area for sure!) The pork was exceptionally clean-tasting, free from any odor, with a tender yet springy texture and deep, nutty flavor. The seasoned radish and dipping sauce complemented the meat perfectly, enhancing its overall balance and depth. While the serving initially appeared modest, the medium portion was more than enough to satisfy three adults comfortably. It was a To-Go order, and the packaging was very neat and professional. I've been here for lunch and dinner and I would only go back for their lunch specials. Their regular menu is a bit underwhelming in terms of selection and taste but I'm definitely biased. Don't let that prevent you from trying this place though. But their lunch specials really surprised me. The pork belly (bossam) is especially my favorite but all the bento boxes give a really good amount of food and variety of dishes and the main meat selections are excellent in terms of variety and flavor. One of the best deals for lunch in Lake Forest. I've been here a few times and the quality of the food has been consistent. The lunch special comes with the sides (varies but kimchi is always on there), rice, soup, salad, shrimp tempura, a potsticker, another fried item, 2 veggie sushi roll, and 2 sweet and sour chicken item that is served cold. It's a lot of food for $20. Everything tastes excellent. Their lunch set menu is perfect for the indecisive because you get some of everything: a main, rice, soup, salad, fried things, 2pc kimbap and some of their fried popcorn chicken. Everything is flavorful and feels healthy, even the fried dumpling and gimmari, because it's not greasy and quite light. The soup is heavy on the white pepper, which is my style. The kimbap is fresh and that's such a flex these days because more often than not, I find restaurants even specializing in kimbap to serve refrigerated kimbap, making the rice hard and unpleasant to eat. But not here. They would never. Service is also fast and reliable. The interior is the light wood that modern Korean restaurants typically have, with relaxing travel b-roll videos playing on the TV that my parents love to watch. Service : great. The lady was super friendly. She tried to help. But when the soup first came out it was luke warm, not spicy and had handful of onions. It was missing everything. She quickly came and saw what was wrong. So she took it back right away. When it came back it was muuuch fuller. But again it was like a huuge bowl of onions. No meat. No noodles no root vegetables. Tasted spicier but like they added more pre-packed spicy mix. Ambiance: very clean. Has charming korean style metal bowls. Served with korea. Barely tea. Huge space for large parties. Thus place service was nice but i think it may be better for lunch bento style lunches. The soups are not good. You feel sad and unsatisfied when you leave. While visiting my mom and looking for a place to eat I found this place. They had steamed egg which was the criteria we were working with for a Korean place so it was exciting! Hanbop is a good sized restaurant the likes of which I would find in K-Town in LA so already I was certain this was going to be good. Easy menu, comfort foods and street food takes all really decently priced. Deciding to be adventurous we decided to share a Rose Ddeok-Boki and an Egg Kimbap and have our own steamed eggs. Starting with the familiar, the steamed egg was a listed as a side dish and though small don't mistake that this was tiny in flavor. Seasoned well, little salty, very eggy but with that satisfying taste of a savory dish twice its size. This is always a favorite and didn't disappoint in a new restaurant. The Rose Ddeok-bokki is a dish I've always wanted to try but was always nervous about. Honestly I wish I had tried it sooner but I'm so glad we tried it today. Sweet, savory, and mild thickness in broth (sauce?) made for a delectable base both comforting and addicting. The rice cakes were cooked perfectly through and while not a favorite for my mom in the past was something she now could get behind, and the fish cakes was her first introduction and one she'll be happy to have more of in the future. This was a perfect comfort food to share dish. Lastly the Egg Kimbap (Egg roll on the menu), normally comes with spam, however our server was kind enough to take the spam out since mom's a vegetarian. This had everything a good Kimbap should, rice and crunchy veg and the soft sweet egg that tasted like a cold thin version of our steamed egg dishes. Happily would order this again and I would recommend for any vegetarians wanting to try to remember to just ask if they can take the spam out. The Banchan was perhaps the only meh part of the entire meal, the kimchi was lacking something most others I've had, had. Not sure what it was but it was just missing something. And the potato salad was bland in comparison to the dishes we had, and lacked corn but that's a personal favorite for me. That said my mom loved the pickled celery and jalapeño, spicy but that crunchy celery freshness was an addicting starter for her and she liked the blandness of the potato salad as it served as a palate cleanser between bites. Still, the service was outstanding, prompt and kind and ready to answer questions or accommodate and the restaurant was clean, modern and spaced out (a personal preference) with comfortable seating.
