Stay away from this spot due to bad conduct & horrible attitude. Literally the worst people ever. While I was having a drink I saw one of the bartenders who told a customer in a rude way to go sit somewhere else. I also saw the bartenders refusing to that same customer not to play dice roll while watching others play. Instead, the individual was told by the bartender not to bother their customers & to go away. While the individual was only observing. Later, then left off unsatisfied. I loved Hanaro. I visited this gem of a bar during SantaCon 2024! The staff was so fun and engaging. There is karaoke which you can do from your seat! That's pretty awesome for this of us who are a little shy about singing in front of other people. Thanks for the good time, Hanaro! read more

Never heard of this place, but I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in... I was greeted by an employee and they showed me around. I met my friend there for some drinks, but I found myself people watching, which I LOVE. The cosy atmosphere with the mood lighting was great. Never had to wait for service or drinks. Fellow Yelper Tom R was having his Meet Up event in the Tenderloin so I decided to join his group along with Cassie J. The event took a stop at this Korean dive bar operated by Taiwanese bartenders. Comparing to the bar next door, this place does not have much of an ambiance except for a juke box, a couple of TVs and a lopsided foosball table. It was very quiet when the three of us arrived but the place finally lit up once Tom's group started to trickle in. Tom was very generous to put money into the jukebox and asked everyone to pick their favorite songs. The bartenders brought out fresh popcorn for everyone and my glass of Anchor Steam ($5) was refreshing but surprisingly expensive. Later, Cassie and I joined forces to play a game of foosball which was a lot of fun. Without much amenity, I thought this dive bar is more dependent on having a crowd than many others I've been to. Tom's event however, was a lot of fun and there were quite a few new faces with those whom I've met. The overall vibe was not as festive as I would have liked so I don't think I would be interested in returning unless Tom is having another event here. read more

I think that this is a better than average dive bar. Very low key. This is a classic TL Bar with a heavy presence of regulars. I like the bar and find it a pretty peaceful bar to have a beer after work. If you like dives where you can chill and unwind, it's a good place to stop. The prices are reasonable and it's a nice spot. I have yet to witness drama. read more

Here is the deal with this place: The 40s something female bartenders will hit you up to buy them drinks (part 1 of the scam). They will always use the same Patron bottle, which will have either water or Redbull in it. (part 2 of the scam). This is an old time SF Asian hostess bar scam, that is alive and well in this place. They will then proceed to charge you $10 to have them drink some water... When they ask me to buy them a drink, I always toss back "I would think you would be able to drink here for free or at a discount since you work here!" They do not like that... They remodeled this place, at least it doesn't resemble a SRO anymore. I don't understand the business model- in this shithole part of town, you would think the drinks would be very cheap, not the same price as somewhere in North Beach or the Financial District.... read more

Super divey dive bar run by a trio of Asian women, with slightly creepy clientele. It became a little more friendly and less creepy once we'd bought a couple of rounds of the only liquor whose names they seem to be able to understand clearly; Henn and Remy, aka the expensive stuff. Being the driver, I asked for a Red Bull. One of the girls looked at me with some confusion, and conferred with the other bartender that spoke slightly better English. After about 10 minutes of back and forth in their language (I'm Filipina-American, so I didn't understand it) and me gesturing and beginning to lose my patience, one of the girls reached down into a refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of Patron and a chilled shot glass. Assuming it was some sort of language barrier gaffe, I decided to just go with it and took the shot. The joke was on me; it really was Red Bull. They're hustlers. You have been warned. read more

Tenderloin SCAM BAR!!! Stay far away. Went with a couple friends who were meeting at Amsterdam bar next door. A 40 something drunk Korean woman started talking to my girl friend and told her to come in her bar, she would give her a free Korean drink. 4 shots later, the woman said 'Who's gonna pay? Who's gonna pay?' To which we replied all of us are, how much is it? The woman replied $80 (for 4 shots of crappy alcohol). We started arguing and got out of there with paying $40 for shots that should have cost $20 at most. Shocked this place is in business, they must look for tourists to rip off other then their korean clientele. Or it is just a 'front' business for something else. Hard to believe they can get away with this scam in the US, I hope they try to scam the wrong person someday! read more

I visit the Hanaro each time I visit San Francisco. Yes it is a dive bar. The drink prices are a little high for the divieness ( Hmmm, is that a word?? ) of this bar. On this trip there were two lovely Asian lady bartenders. As always one came over and started to flirt with me. She was very cute and friendly. So for a few $10 half shots of Patron that I bought for her, she stayed flirting with me the rest of the evening. I know that the drinks were going to be pricey and she was just flirting with me because it was her job. Still I had fun. It can be a fun bar, just remember that the girls are paid to flirt with the customers. If you like to have cute Asian ladies flirting with you, buy them a few of the $10 half shots, then they will be your best friend until you stop buying the shots. read more

Mostly harmless. Yeah, it's a Korean-owned bar, a divey one at that, but its character really changes depending on who's behind the counter. I've found it has a Jekyll and Hyde, manic-depressive personality. Yeah, it can be your worst wallet-draining K-bar hostess scenario. Or it can be a somber place to grab a quick beer. If you revel in inconsistency and enjoy playing Russian roulette with your nightlife, you should check out Hanaro because your mileage will definitely vary. Or you could go to the depths of hell known as Dimples over in J-town. At least they're more consistent. read more

I first came to this dive bar in 2005 and it's definitely one of my favorite places. As with any business, there are sometimes a few bad apple employees and Hanaro is no exception. This is a great place to spend time if you know what bartenders to avoid and which ones are professional and fun. I'm not sure what people conjecture about this place in a glace that sets them up for disappointment once they decide to stay for a cocktail. The sign? The dim interior? The stale smell? The crusty clientele? It's a dive bar for chrissakes! And as a dive bar, it's almost perfect. Little glasses, strong booze, a sad jukebox, kitsch not worth stealing. A cry into your cup sort of establishment. If you want something more cheery, try New Amsterdam which is literally next door. why did we end up here? i have no clue. there's so many other bars to choose from. hell, whiskey thieves which is one of my favorites is just down the street. we had actually just been drinking at geary club down the street, and should have just stayed there. oh well. the bartenders here were all asian women who tried flirting w/ the customers to get them to buy drinks. apparently it actually worked on some people. the drinks here were also pretty pricey for a total dive. the one cool thing about our night there was that we got another group of people to sing along with us to the jukebox hella loud. yeah.. i doubt i'd go back. This is an average bar that was behind the times, they finally got the internet jukebox,they remodel the bar to make it look less divey. But of course they have the buy me drinkie girls working here,who at first seemed friendly oh and they are they just want what's in your wallet flirting with you to make you spend all of your hard earned money. But I see some regulars who doesn't care about how much they spend here, like the more money you spend here you get more attention. read more
