This place is run by all volunteer community members. I would definitely call ahead and see when…read morethere will be someone there. Also this is Hāna so if you are a tourist ask a local worker at your hotel or place you are staying and they probably know someone they can call and tell you. While not big it has a lot of interesting artifacts and a wealth of information about Hāna and its people. The big thing to check out if you do go is the HALE, aka HAWAIIAN THATCHED STRUCTURES. The person currently in charge of reconstructing is a Hawaiian master builder. No I'm not taking fake grass shacks but the real deal. If you are lucky you might even be able to join in and help if he is there working. Just think you can go back home and say you did something real.

It pains me to write this. I get that the Hana Cultural Center may be run by volunteers. However,…read morewe were in Hana for four days and the hours posted were never accurate. We even tried twice to shoot for the middle time (eg, if "open" from 11 am - 3pm we'd try 1pm). We waited around once for 30 minutes, as did some others. We tried four times in four days and it was never open- even when the updated post on the front door said it would be. We also tried to call- no one was ever there. Doesn't take much to post a sign with correct hours (even if closed) or change the voicemail to update those very interested in learning about Hawaiian culture. Missed opportunity.

Definitely stop by Kohala Artists' Cooperative; it's just off the road, but you might miss it if…read moreyou're not looking. Inside, you'll find an eclectic collection of art from local artists. Some of the woodworkings and glass art are spectacular! There are loads of other items as well, each one unique and hand made. When we arrived, there was a glass-blowing workshop going on outside the cooperative, where a man was teaching a group of people how to make glass art, by melting the glass on a rod in the big hot oven, then blowing into the hollow tube to shape the glass, and fill it with air. This would be a fantastic way to spend a few hours, if you're creative and don't mind the heat of the oven. They'll even ship your finished work of art to you if you're not around, in the day or so after it dries and cools.

This is a cute co-op featuring artwork from 20+ local artists, from photography to ceramics. If you…read morehave the time, I recommend signing up ahead for a glass-blowing class. The skilled glassblowers, Matthew and Carolyn will guide you through the process of making your own custom glass object. This is an excellent group activity as you watch and encourage each other as you make your objects in turn. A unique experience to say the least, and your final reward is a keepsake to commemorate the experience for years to come. This was the highlight of my last Big Island trip.
