When we arrived, there was a glass-blowing workshop going on outside the cooperative, where a man was teaching a group of people how to make glass art, by melting the glass on a rod in the big hot oven, then blowing into the hollow tube to shape the glass, and fill it with air. This would be a fantastic way to spend a few hours, if you're creative and don't mind the heat of the oven. They'll even ship your finished work of art to you if you're not around, in the day or so after it dries and cools.

There are plenty of unique items in this store, that's for sure! We wandered in here (there are not…read moremany places to do so in this town) last month. The lady working here was friendly enough and not hovering, so that was a plus. She did get a little spastic when a lady entered shortly after us and failed to spritz her hands with the sanitizer at the door (guess what lady, we didn't either when we came in). Anyhow, the only thing that caught my attention were some fabric oriented handcrafted / hand woven ornamental cushions / wall pieces designed as colorful fish. Actually they caught my under 2 years old grand daughter's attention HAHAHA. I had not bought her a real souvenir on our trip yet and since we were babysitting, while mom and dad zip lined somewhere nearby, I let her pick one out from the dozen present. There were no price tags denoting the cost of these rightfully beautiful items; hmmmmm. She gleefully chose one and we went to the counter. Okay I'm on vacation and expect to pay a little extra for whatever, especially in Hawaii. Cha ching, that'll be $75. WTF? Damn, I was expecting a high of MAYBE $45. So, yes, they have some very nice and unique items in this store, but be prepared to drop a few more coins than expected. Yes, I bought the woven colorful fish for my baby doll anyhow. I wasn't about to disappoint the wee one and I had to be stoic in front of my wife who was laughing internally at me, knowing I can be a cheap ass. This thing was made in Sri Lanka and is suppose to be a one of a kind item. Even if it's not I doubt my granddaughter and her parents will ever bump into anyone having anything similar. Fast forward a month later - she has named the fish (Bubbles), sleeps with it regularly, and carries it with her on outings. So, I guess it was well worth the $$$. If I ever had a reason to go back to this part of the island I'd probably return and see what the latest unique thing the owner has in there. Who knows, I may end buying something else too. The place was A-OK in my books.

Got to tell you right up front, I am proud to say this review is about my mom and her little…read morejewelery shop. Its not impartial, its personal. My mom and I moved to Hawaii when i was 3 years old back in '82 and she has lived on the Big Island ever since. We had lived all over the island but for the last 16 years she has lived in North Kohala and taught public school there. She has always been an artist and creator since I was a child. My grandfather, her father made jewelery as a hobby all his life, and sparked her passion. Now my mother has finally taken the plunge, from a private passion, to a public one, making it available to the world. Stop by her shop and you will see her sitting at her jewelery counter beading beautiful necklaces, bracelets, earrings and a selection of other fine jewelery. And in her shop you can find countless examples of her handcrafted work. She even offers classes to the community, and supports local artist by having a shared space where locals can display their work. I hope if your visiting Hawaii or a local and are traveling around the island you make a stop at her shop, "Kathleens Creations" its a great place to visit.
