Besides the farmers markets this is where I chose to do the vast majority of my souvenir shopping while we were on the Big Island! We were on our way from Kona to Hilo via Hapuna beach and a couple of scenic lookouts when we stumbled across this shop. Right across the street from one of the King Kamehameha statues, and next to King's View Cafe... Along with a large selection of higher end locally made products this shop also has t-shirts and inexpensive jewelry too. If you are in the area this is a must stop shopping spot! Spend a few minutes with the friendly staff! And as long as you're here you might as well go next door to King's View and grab a plate...! read more

Cool store and gallery in Hawi (up on the North Kohala side of the Island). Beautiful art but be sure to ask (if you care) if the artist is local. Some things are from local artists and some are not. Lots of great "gifty" items from Christmas ornaments to body sprays to candles to toys to jewelry to sculptures and artwork. The jewelry was really nice looking and not your typical plastic flowers. I didn't ask the price ... should have... there was a couple of really nice pearl pendants and slipper earrings I was eyeing. Alas, I left with just the little sandman / snowman that will add to my Christmas collection that I add to from places we vacation. read more

This is one of my favorite galleries on Hawaii. It's a lovely drive from the Kohala area and the gallery features visual art, jewelry, sculpture, clothing, all sorts of lovely items. Directly across the street is the statue of Kamehameha who seems to watch over my shopping sprees. Located across the street from the King Kam statue, this was a very cool gallery/gift shop. I was talking to the very nice woman who was running the store on a Wednesday afternoon - she was awesome and really knew the area. This is a clean and well appointed store in Kapaau stocked with quality items. I shall return on my next trip to the area! read more

A surprise to find a gallery almost at the end of the road in Kapa'au in Kohala District. There are clothes, jewelry and art offered for sale. They even carry a line of Hana Shinjuku, a line of patented, award winning, carved Tahitian and South Sea pearls. Beautiful! read more

I can't even begin to describe how much I love this place. It doesn't matter how far away I'm staying on the Big Island, I will always make a trip to Hawi and to this store. They have beautiful artwork with local artists, clothing and especially jewelry. They usually have a great deal on jewelry- buy 3, get 4th for a penny! They will also switch out the length of the chains for you at no charge. The other day, we all got to talking this time and forgot to switch them out. I was already gone by the time I realized it and they sent me 3 new longer length chains to my residence!! So, so, so nice! What customer service!! My favorite gal there is my birthday twin, Ha'a. She is THE BEST! So personable, knowledgable and sweet. She is the epitome of Hawaii and Hawaiian to me. So lovely and friendly. So mahalo to everyone at Ackerman Galleries and  especially to Ha'a! I cannot believe no one has yet reviewed this gem of a business! We were staying at the Fairmont on our Big Island vacation and decided to take a drive for lunch and some free spirited exploration. This place came recommended from another gallery in Hawi when we were looking for some Koa wood jewelry. Originally I saw some in Honolulu but they were quite expensive and my husband was not with me at the time to try things on. This place is right across the Kamehameha statue and has parking. We walked in and started browsing some great local artists works, jewelry, clothes, and paintings. Its quite a large store and the person working there was very helpful and accommodating. We ended up getting a few Koa wood pieces that were so reasonable (1/3 of what stores in Honolulu and the resort wanted) and beautiful we were excited. We also picked up a HI inspired dress and a great sculpture. The selection is very nice, the prices are very reasonable, and its not your regular tourist trap where most things are kitschy and expensive. I highly recommend this store for browsing and picking up some unique pieces if your heart desires. read more

Nice little stop on the way to riding the flume, nestled in a very cute town and located immediately next to a great place to stop for a drink and a bite. The little girl with the matching bunny outfit to her dress was soooo cute! Look out on some pricing. Go to the International Marketplace first to check prices and barter if that's your thing. Some of their items are very reasonably priced and some you can find much less expensively elsewhere. read more

I have frequented the Ackerman store in the past many times. I am from the mainland and also have a home in Waikoloa. We visit the Big Island 3 and 4 times a year. I have always shopped at the Ackerman store and have spent a lot of money there for myself and grandkids. My one stardoes not reflect the store but it does reflect an employee. This time I wanted to get something special for my grand daughter and know Ackermans has unique gifts. There was a tall blond woman that was working there. She never once asked me if I needed help and when I went to pay it was as if I was asking her for a favor. She never spoke to me until I asked her if she had a box for the little brown guitar. She was clearly agitated at me daring to ask her for something. She came back from the back room and informed me that there was no box. She told me she would bubble wrap it. Every time she pulled off a piece of tape she would slam the tape holder down on the counter. She kept pulling a lot of tape off and slamming the holder down. Clearly she was agitated. Another customer saw her with the tape holder and could see she was agitated and made the comment" wow nothing is going to happen to that guitar" After I paid for my merchandise she asked me if I wanted a bag and I said yes she then placed everything in a bag and handed it to me without even saying thank you. I did sarcastically look at her and tell her "You're welcome!"with a huge smile. This woman either needs to learn how to appreciate her customers or find a job that doesn't include working with the public. read more

This is one of the nicest galleries/gift shop on the north end of the island. They carry a large variety of merchandise, including paintings, jewelry, and clothing. The proprietor was very friendly and helpful and made our shopping enjoyable. Everything was a high quality and the volcanic art work was amazing. Just wish I could afford it! read more

Following visits of nearly everyday during our 9+ weeks stay in Kapaau, they consistently welcomed customers with warm smiles and incredible displays.
