Along with a large selection of higher end locally made products this shop also has t-shirts and inexpensive jewelry too. If you are in the area this is a must stop shopping spot! It reminded me of some of the "blah" touristy shops on Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona. The person who worked there was nice enough. But with so many stores nearby that actually sell locally-made items, As Hawi Turns probably isn't worth a visit.

She kept shrieking "stop touching! I told you all to stop touching the fruit! I will grab for you!!". I rang up a couple mangos and lychee, and she added $3 to the charge. When I asked how she arrived the total, she tallied it up again and couldn't explain the difference. Then when she charged my card on the Square device, she forcibly added another $2?!?!? I asked her about and she said "credit card charge," with no further explanation. I'm not sure what type of fruit vendor expects any rational customer to not gently touch a piece of fruit. Avoid this place and find a nicer proprietor. She seemed irrational and rude to tourists. She was sneaky, and could be adding to other customers' bills erroneously. I'm guessing a lot of folks don't notice the difference.

But good grief, this business has the reliability of a toddler with a sugar crash. I drove a long distance to visit this shop. My partner drove here twice. The owner even had the lack of integrity to tell my partner that she would be there today. Hilarious. At this point, I'm convinced the shop is run like a speakeasy: If you know, you know. Turns out, the locals know exactly what's going on: Apparently the shop owner is... how do I put this delicately... the human equivalent of a mosquito at a barbecue. You'd think a business owner would occasionally... I don't know... open the business? But no. She's running this place like a part-time hobby she actively resents. And the lack of communication? Chef's kiss. She doesn't even bother to explain why she's never open. At this point, I half expect the shop hours to eventually read: OPEN: When the stars align CLOSED: Always MAYBE: If Mercury is in retrograde AND she feels like it To say she's giving the town a bad reputation is an understatement. This shop is basically the retail equivalent of stepping in gum. Sticky, annoying, and somehow still your problem even though you didn't ask for it. I won't be back. Ever. And you can bet I'll be telling this story everywhere -- Yelp, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, the back of cereal boxes, cave walls... whatever it takes. Mike was not only an expert in all things chocolate, but he is easy to understand, he takes time to teach you and answer any questions and he has a great personality! It was pouring down rain the day we went, yet the tour was still a great success. We started out at the farm and then concluded down at the shop. You get to taste fresh cacao, nibs, cacao tea and kakao brew - of course at the shop are the full chocolate bars. Mike clearly loves what he does and enjoys sharing that love with his customers. The only down side is that after listening to Mike you will be ruined forever on eating any other general retail chocolate. So long Hershey and friends!
