On our recent trip to Bentleyville with friends and our families another hotel left us literally…read morehigh and dry. (They were going to not have water during our stay.) However The Cobblestone, Fawn and Kaytee saved the day. They were able to get us two rooms fairly close to each other and we had a lovely stay. The amenities of this hotel are amazing from the breakfast lounge to the coffee station. Everything about our station was comforting and pleasant.

As you can see in the pictures, it could not be used because it was broken and would not pull out all the way. Questionable stains on the couch and the carpet and the ceiling is falling apart. Couldn't flush the toilet at night cause it's louder than a 747. Fridge was warm. We told them about the broken pull out and they just offered to move us. We had a lot of stuff in the room and it was not worth moving. Could have offered some money off the room.

I could her ethe person in the room next to us peeing and that's what woke me up in the morning. This room cost more the Best Western Plus in Grand Rapids which was absolutely top notch. The carpet had stains and I couldn't make myself walk on it barefoot it was just gross. I had the bathroom door open while going potty and under the sink is gross, peeling paint just yuck and the corner ceiling was peeling as well. And the shampoo dispenser was empty.

General - I've stayed here on numerous occasions in 2025 during different times of the year. Some…read morewas for work while other times it was with family. Basically, if the price is right, we will stay here. Location - The hotel is located in the bay/harbor area right off of Lake Superior which gives it some very nice views of the surrounding area and wildlife. There isn't much on the island but you are only a few miles away from Superior which offers numerous shops and restaurants. There is a nice little park at the entrance of the island that you can walk to. The trail is nice to walk when the weather is nice out, they have done a lot of native restoration in the area and it is full of wild flowers during that time. Also, go and see the last remaining whaleback boat - the SS Meteor. You can walk around the vessel for free or tour inside for a small entrance fee. Rooms & Building - Let's get it out of the way right now, the resort is older and dated. Is it in terrible condition? No. But it isn't brand new either. The rooms are at least clean and comfortable. It probably depends on what room you get but the rooms I have gotten have always been in good shape and clean. The beds have been comfortable and everything in the room has been in good working order. There are signs of wear and tear inside and outside but keep in mind (especially the outside) that Lake Superior winters are absolutely brutal and beat the tar out of everything in its wake. Amenities - The hotel has a large pool/hot tub area in the middle of the building. The pool is usually heated to a nice temp and the hot tub has good jets. There is a small arcade attached to the pool area. Lots of table seating for group gatherings. Food - There is no free breakfast options available but there is a restaurant/bar onsite. I have never tried it out but I have heard good things from the locals. Vibe - Easy going and super friendly staff. No complaints. Reality vs. Online - Pictures that I saw on their website and online matched the quality and condition of the hotel and rooms in-person. No surprises. Price & Final Verdict - Once again, if the price is right (I normally try to stay here around the $100 a night mark), then my family will choose this place. We have enjoyed our stays here. Although not the flashiest place to stay in the Duluth area, it is one of the more affordable options out there that offers a nice setting and amenities list.

Rooms were $200+ a night, despite later finding out on Expedia that they were around $80. However, the hotel refused to price match. The bedspreads were very dingy, and I also found a bunch of hairs and other questionable stains on the bed, as you can see in the photos I posted, as well as hairs on the toilet and throughout the entire bathroom. The room upholstery was also gross. My sister reported that she had a gnat flying around her room, and her towels were damp. My dad got chicken wings from the bar for dinner that night and found that they were raw. Important caveat: he had gotten Orange Jäger with those wings. Moving on, the next day we were forced to get dinner here again because my sister was the rental car driver, and she's difficult and didn't want to drive anywhere. So, instead of paying $30 for Uber Eats, I reluctantly decided to try the bar food. The bar manager told my dad that night, "Sorry, no Orange Jäger," despite him having it the night before. She said, "If we have it, you can have the whole bottle." She left, and the bartender found the Orange Jäger, but to my dad's disappointment, the bottle only had about one shot left. The bar manager never came out to apologize for her mistake. We got the fettuccine Alfredo, which was the worst Alfredo I have ever had in my life. It was bland and cold. Later that night, my sister, who was sadly on the first floor across from the pool, couldn't sleep because kids were running up and down the halls and slamming doors. She called the front desk several times, but no one answered, so she had to go down there to actually talk to someone. The AC in the room was loud, as expected, but when I went to adjust it, the knob was extremely difficult to turn and almost got stuck. In addition, as you can see in the pictures, we got breakfast the following morning because my sister slept terribly the night before and slept in, and I needed to eat something. I got the veggie omelet, which was fine, but my dad got two sunny-side-up eggs, and wow, those were disgusting. When the waitress brought them out, I was like, "Um, wow," and she just smiled bashfully. My dad didn't refuse them at first, but I told him, "No, get new ones," so he did, and those were fine, I guess. But the pictures speak for themselves. We would have changed hotels, but it was during a busy holiday weekend, and everywhere else was booked. We definitely found that next time, we will be staying at Pier B instead. This place is far from luxury--more like a Super 8 motel. Just grateful we didn't leave with bed bugs.

However, my biggest complaint is that the walls are thin and you can hear EVERY door slam, pounding feet, etc... If you're noise sensitive, beware and ask for a room on the third floor and away from stairs and elevator. #INeedToSleep Overall, I'd entertain coming back if I needed a one night cheaper place to sleep near Duluth but definitely wouldn't stay long term.

After my stay, I don't regret my decision. Opened in 1924, the hotel has hosted many US presidents, but JFK as the last. The rooms has been updated and are both clean and well kept. They have the requisite mini frig and microwave, current model TV. No in room coffee, no complimentary breakfast, but there is a restaurant in the lobby open for breakfast and lunch six days and dinner or Friday. More paperwork to check in than there would be a a Ritz Carlton, but they operate in an old-timey way, and what's wrong with that? A choice of bars and restaurants on Tower Avenue which runs in front of the hotel. Yes, I'd stay there again.

We stayed for 3 days in July and the service was great, nice room, and the staff was very accommodating. We booked for 4 nights in August and the staff treated us like we had the plague. The carpet in our room was damp. Our bathroom door did not shut. The staff was not friendly or kind to us. We were told we could not refuse housekeeping services and that the Do Not Disturb sign was just a suggestion. Apparently, they could come into our room any time. My husband works as a care taker of an apartment and had just passed his Fair Housing exam and knew all those things were untrue. We'll never stay there again.

I can speak and offer opinions with particularity and knowledge about hospitality. Unfortunately, lately, service and attention to detail have declined significantly. Perhaps due to cutting corners and not giving travelers what they deserve. Remember, people look for that little corner that somehow makes them feel close to home. I was very surprised and delighted to find this place. I didn't expect such personalized, friendly, and professional service. When I checked into the condo, I was pleasantly surprised. Large, comfortable, well-appointed, and with very tasteful details in the decor. Very well thought out. The privacy of the unit (305B) is excellent. The kitchenware and utensils are of very high quality. But the most important thing is the cleanliness and hygiene. A very rare bird, or Rara Avis, to find. I hope they continue like this. Especially with the bedding and towels. I wish them the best. Just one detail. They should have at least one unit with a shower for disabled guests, not for me, but for other people. Thank you.

That said, the South Pier Inn was a remarkable surprise. To be fair, we sprung for one of the large rooms that was adjacent to the Aerial Lift Bridge. The room wasn't cheap, but there is nothing like looking at your window and seeing a thousand foot tanker sailing by a stone's throw away. Amazingly, the rooms are so well insulated from noise you could miss the whole thing. Fortunately, the hotel offers ship spotting calls, even in the wee hours of the morning so you don't miss a passing vessel (if that's your thing). The front desk staff was a textbook example of Minnesota nice. Such lovely people! And the simple continental breakfast (which I also usually hate) included wild rice cranberry bread made at an 80 year old institution. We even had the misfortune of booking a room when the small parking lot was being redone. However, the hotel managed that escapade very well, providing off site parking and a shuttle service to our car. It was such a treat to be able to walk over the bridge into the canal district, for a quick dinner without a drive, and to have such a well kept home base for our Minnesota adventure. So soft and comfortable I didn't want to leave and the jacuzzi tub had a 3D view of the channel. It was an amazing wonderful stay. My husband and I have stayed at 5 star hotels all over this country on the 4 month journey and I can honestly say this is the only one I could come back to.
