We booked a room for Friday night here and decided to add on for Thursday night. I called and talked with Carly and she was so accommodating and gave fantastic customer service! She looked up my Hilton Honors number and due to that we were able to get an added discount. She also ensured that we would have the same room and that everything was up to our standards. We were pleasantly surprised with the room layout and how comfy and cozy it was. We got a great price and it renewed our love for the Hilton hotel brand. The hotel is located in a good spot right in the middle of things we look forward to enjoying (canal park, the anchor bar, Fitgers, etc). Thank you again to Carly for providing the great customer service- we will definitely be back!

    Newer hotel with shiny bathroom.

A newer Hampton, and that's always a good thing. Ethan checked us in and was super awesome. We actually felt like valued gold members. The rest of the stay was nice. Hotel was quiet and the breakfast was good.

As you can see in the pictures, it could not be used because it was broken and would not pull out all the way. Questionable stains on the couch and the carpet and the ceiling is falling apart. Couldn't flush the toilet at night cause it's louder than a 747. Fridge was warm. We told them about the broken pull out and they just offered to move us. We had a lot of stuff in the room and it was not worth moving. Could have offered some money off the room.

Monday morning we added another night to be safe if our car wasn't ready . Turns out our car was ready a half hour after check out . We contacted Expedia to see our options as we booked this hotel through them . I have in a chat that Expedia would cancel with hotels permission. I walked down to front desk and was explaining the situation... the manager Michael said no we will not cancel this reservation ... I again explained the situation thinking maybe he would have some sort of compassion, But No he again repeated himself in a very rude tone ... I said Wow and walked away . I called best western customer service and they even tried to talk to the manager to see if they could make an exception. NOPE he stuck to his decision. DO NOT STAY HERE !!!

Basically, if the price is right, we will stay here. Location - The hotel is located in the bay/harbor area right off of Lake Superior which gives it some very nice views of the surrounding area and wildlife. There isn't much on the island but you are only a few miles away from Superior which offers numerous shops and restaurants. There is a nice little park at the entrance of the island that you can walk to. The trail is nice to walk when the weather is nice out, they have done a lot of native restoration in the area and it is full of wild flowers during that time. Also, go and see the last remaining whaleback boat - the SS Meteor. You can walk around the vessel for free or tour inside for a small entrance fee. Rooms & Building - Let's get it out of the way right now, the resort is older and dated. Is it in terrible condition? No. But it isn't brand new either. The rooms are at least clean and comfortable. It probably depends on what room you get but the rooms I have gotten have always been in good shape and clean. The beds have been comfortable and everything in the room has been in good working order. There are signs of wear and tear inside and outside but keep in mind (especially the outside) that Lake Superior winters are absolutely brutal and beat the tar out of everything in its wake. Amenities - The hotel has a large pool/hot tub area in the middle of the building. The pool is usually heated to a nice temp and the hot tub has good jets. There is a small arcade attached to the pool area. Lots of table seating for group gatherings. Food - There is no free breakfast options available but there is a restaurant/bar onsite. I have never tried it out but I have heard good things from the locals. Vibe - Easy going and super friendly staff. No complaints. Reality vs. Online - Pictures that I saw on their website and online matched the quality and condition of the hotel and rooms in-person. No surprises. Price & Final Verdict - Once again, if the price is right (I normally try to stay here around the $100 a night mark), then my family will choose this place. We have enjoyed our stays here. Although not the flashiest place to stay in the Duluth area, it is one of the more affordable options out there that offers a nice setting and amenities list.

I can speak and offer opinions with particularity and knowledge about hospitality. Unfortunately, lately, service and attention to detail have declined significantly. Perhaps due to cutting corners and not giving travelers what they deserve. Remember, people look for that little corner that somehow makes them feel close to home. I was very surprised and delighted to find this place. I didn't expect such personalized, friendly, and professional service. When I checked into the condo, I was pleasantly surprised. Large, comfortable, well-appointed, and with very tasteful details in the decor. Very well thought out. The privacy of the unit (305B) is excellent. The kitchenware and utensils are of very high quality. But the most important thing is the cleanliness and hygiene. A very rare bird, or Rara Avis, to find. I hope they continue like this. Especially with the bedding and towels. I wish them the best. Just one detail. They should have at least one unit with a shower for disabled guests, not for me, but for other people. Thank you.

That said, the South Pier Inn was a remarkable surprise. To be fair, we sprung for one of the large rooms that was adjacent to the Aerial Lift Bridge. The room wasn't cheap, but there is nothing like looking at your window and seeing a thousand foot tanker sailing by a stone's throw away. Amazingly, the rooms are so well insulated from noise you could miss the whole thing. Fortunately, the hotel offers ship spotting calls, even in the wee hours of the morning so you don't miss a passing vessel (if that's your thing). The front desk staff was a textbook example of Minnesota nice. Such lovely people! And the simple continental breakfast (which I also usually hate) included wild rice cranberry bread made at an 80 year old institution. We even had the misfortune of booking a room when the small parking lot was being redone. However, the hotel managed that escapade very well, providing off site parking and a shuttle service to our car. It was such a treat to be able to walk over the bridge into the canal district, for a quick dinner without a drive, and to have such a well kept home base for our Minnesota adventure. Thank you for a lovely stay. I sincerely hope we get to return.
