I have been coming to this hotel for the past eight years with my mom. This is honestly one of the best hotels and it's like undescribable with words that support staff are so friendly and the breakfast is so amazing. It's kind of like a buffet, but it's a buffet where the food is actually good. They keep replacing the food too. The rooms are really nice and they respect your belongings and privacy needs. This Hampton Inn has some age on her, but she's in a great location and is well kept! I would rate 4 stars but the cost outpaced the age and general atmosphere of this hotel, but the price could very well be consistent with summer demand. Beautifully set along the boardwalk and canal park commercial area, this location is perfect for Duluth visitors! The hotel and room was very clean but just was from a past era. I wouldn't say the bed was super comfy but it was adequate and the room was pretty quiet. Bathroom was spacious and uniquely designed. Elevator was super slow but stairs are easily accessible. Breakfast was the average marginal Hampton breakfast but served in a very nice windowed room with views of the water. I am a Hilton Honors Diamond member and received a complimentary room upgrade- room with view of the water. This was an appreciated perk but otherwise the front desk did not acknowledge my status even when checking in. read more

Our stay was Sunday night Nov 23 for the Bentlyville Tour of Lights event. Initially we had reserved a Queen Lakeview, but took advantage of a website offered upgrade to a King 1 Bedroom Suite (although that's not how it was labeled) with a Whirlpool (jetted tub) for an extra $40. The room labels for the upgrades to bid on did not match the labels of the rooms on the Hilton Canal Park webpage, but Michelle was very helpful in email correspondence in decoding the rooms being offered and the process of bidding on upgrades and the obligations involved. The King Suites are normally $100 more than the Queen Lakeviews for a Sunday. Oddly a Queen Partial View was also offered for bids at $80 more than our Queen Lakeview, although it would have been a downgrade. Construction was going on, which we were warned about on our stay last year. There was the expected smell of paint, commotion, and compromises on amenities because of this. You are paying a premium for the Canal Park location with this property, the event was a fifteen minute walk. Beautiful Lake Superior was about a hundred yards away across a service road, and we pretty much had the shoreline there to ourselves early Monday morning. The third floor room was clean, quiet, and adequately stocked which was expected for the price. They accommodated us with a rollaway bed for my girlfriend's daughter, though not right away. According to Business Travel News this property was built back in 1997 and last renovated 2013. It's definitely showing its age. There were several issues that likely won't be fixed with the current renovation, like dated slow elevators, which according to other reviewers has abruptly dropped with their groups inside. They have electronic checkin with the app, which is a big reason I stay with this chain, but the app didn't control the TV or the heating/cooling control, which their promo material advertises it to. I was told this was not going change with the renovation. The shower door wouldn't close all the way, so you had to be careful about water on the floor. Also when my girlfriend tried the jetted tub the hose leaked and sprayed water everywhere. The tiny laundry room had no washers (hopefully temporary with the renovation). The tiny workout room had just three of pieces of decades old equipment, a stairmaster, bike, and treadmill. It just fit me and her daughter, we had a couple people peek in and then leave while we were in there. The pool was nice. The breakfast, not in the normal dining area because of the construction, was typical generic fare to feed a lot of people cheaply despite TV promos showing a bagel shop bagel and sliced fresh fruit. I've yet to see either of these at any Hilton property. There wasn't much for snacks, you were mainly at the mercy of machines that ripped you off. I was overcharged several dollars for a bottle of Pepsi, which the evening desk person said he couldn't do anything about, but was refunded in cash the next morning by the day desk. When it happened the evening desk person mentioned the machine had outright stolen money from others without even giving drinks. When asked about the free water for 'Silver' membership, the only tangible benefit that level gets you, the evening desk girl pointed to a basket with some tiny bottles of warm Glacier Mint to apparently serve myself. This water perk is clearly just a token thing, but other Hiltons make more of an effort. The Hampton Duluth North gave us a couple of chilled large Aquafina's in a Hilton paper bag. We've stuck with the Hilton umbrella this last couple years after some bad experiences with Wyndham's, although the Hilton options for Duluth are fairly limited. A ten minute Uber ride away is the Hampton & Suites Duluth North/Mall Area, built in 2017, for two thirds the price of this one on any given night. We stayed there for the Haunted Ship event a month earlier, and 20 years newer does make a difference not to mention a more motivated staff. There are also countless other downtown Duluth hotels from competing chains and independents, like the new boutique property Force On Fifth, that likely would offer a comparable or better experience for less money. If you have to have a downtown Duluth Hilton and are willing to spend $200-$400 a night on a room depending on the day of the week, this property will just do. read more

Prime location right by the "ocean" (as gram's calls it)! Loved our trip last year, decided to make it an annual getaway! Going back in August, staying in the same room overlooking the bay. Can't wait! Staff was very accommodating and approachable. Breakfast was yummy and the whole vacation was just the right balance between relaxing at the hotel and getting out and about. A solid Hampton Inn and what you would expect. I'm working on my diamond status and thought I would venture out and explore some of the Hilton properties vs. Marriott. Great location! You can park it and forget it. Within walking distance to many restaurants, bars, and breweries. Plenty of parking at the hotel and no parking garage to deal with. Nice size rooms and very clean. The workout room is tiny with a tread and step machine. No free weights, but hey they have free breakfast! I would absolutely stay here again for value and location alone! read more

There's nothing inherently wrong with this Hampton, it has everything you would expect from a nice hotel from cookies in the lobby to nicer soap and shampoo bottles in the rooms but other than the expectations, there's nothing extraordinary about the location. Some people may have a view of the lake from their room, mine was of the parking lot (which is fine because I wasn't here for the view anyway). You can't prepay so when I arrived, I had to wait for my boss in the lobby before I could check in (and thus use the company credit card as this was a business trip). My room was at the very end of the hall which is totally fine but I was also sharing a wall with a young family consisting of two small children. The walls, as I found out, are thinner than I would have liked. That wasn't as bad as my upstairs neighbor, though. Whether or not they intended to walk around like an elephant, I don't know but the floors are as thin as the walls. They have a breakfast that runs from 6am-10am which is nice and that is a lot longer than most hotel breakfast and there is free parking on the property. Duluth had just been hit by a large snowstorm a fee days prior to my arrival so there was a lot of snow in the parking lot but there was still enough space to find a parking spot. The hospitality here is alright, they seem to be pretty hands off of the whole matter but that's fine. I probably wouldn't choose to stay here again unless I got a room on the top floor, I don't like being woken up at 6am simply because that's the time someone above me needs to be awake. I would recommend this place if you're staying for less than a few days and if you're a heavy sleeper. read more

Whole family stayed here last weekend for a funeral. I am not experienced in Duluth MN but do know many if the hotels are dated and run down. This location is clean, has a nice feel and is located in Canal Park which is busy but central for a lot of action in the city. It also back up against Lake Superior which is pretty spectacular. The staff is helpful, not always the most organized but kind and accommodating when asked. We had a few room mix ups but we did have a large family and 6 rooms so we have to own part of the blame. The breakfast isn't award winning but it is good and there are several options. If you don't like their coffee, Carribou is across the street and the neighboring eats are a brewery, pizzeria and several other decent options. The rooms are your classic 2 full/queen or King options which bathtub/ showers which is my least favorite thing and something I judge all hotels by. read more

This hotel is in a wonderful location! The view when eating the free breakfast was spectacular, as you can see the water and a lighthouse. The breakfast was a solid 10/10 having every breakfast item you would want. The workers were super nice, especially the workers in charge of breakfast. We only spent the night for 1 night, so we didn't get to fully use the amenities. I will say that we are a Gold Hilton Honors member, and there were no additional benefits here which was disappointing; it felt the same as being a regular guest without membership. The rooms were decent - a little outdated, but the bed was comfortable and the shower had hot water. We would recommend staying here if you're looking for a place to stay that's walking distance around Duluth! read more

The staff at this Hampton Inn went above and beyond. Everyone from the front desk, breakfast, housekeeping...so kind and friendly. We stayed here initially because they take dogs. At check-in the front desk staff offered to tell me about dog-friendly restaurants with patios in the area. The hotel is next door to a brewery, easy to walk to the shops and restaurants in Canal Park. Beautiful views of the lake, and a nice outside patio to sit and have breakfast. A newer hotel right in the heart of the canal street festivities with three stores and plenty of free parking. We had two rooms on the top (third floor) - one a double with two queens and the other a massive king at the end of the hall with a spectacular lake view, bar area and lots of space. I checked in online (via the Hilton app) so when we arrived it only took a minute to get the keys and parking pass for the car and we were on our way to our rooms. As a newer hotel in canal park area of Duluth this place was in very good shape and so very conveniently located to everything. I really liked our room - #301- as it was in my favorite location - all the way at the end of the hall. (So no loud foot traffic going by your door all night and not as many loud slamming doors which can really get annoying in mid-scale hotels) and on the top floor too so things were nice and quiet. Plus, all the extra space was a bonus. A family could have pulled out the sofa sleeper and fit in a couple kids for sure. Now the room wasn't cheap ($340/night) - especially for a Hampton, and especially for a city the size of Duluth but it was a holiday weekend so I'm sure we paid a big premium. The larger lot for free parking (get a tag at the front desk or get towed) saved money as the canal park area is filled with pay parking. Because of the central location, once we parked, it was just an easy short walk to restaurants, the waterfront and all the main sites. Your room also comes with Free breakfast - although it was a bit of a zoo with a lot of families. The poor innkeepers could barely keep up stocking the place. All the typical free breakfast goodies, cereal, donuts, one of those flip over waffle machines, toast, juice, etc. Bottom line, it was a perfect summer day in Duluth in a great location. This hotel has a perfect location, right in Canal Park, on the water & within walking distance to some great food places like Lake Ave & Love Creamery. The room was decently clean, the mirrors were streaky & the bedding looked a little worn, but otherwise it was fine. The $20 extra we paid for a lake view room was a mistake, the windows opened 6" & the view was obstructed & not visible from any seating or from the bed, so not really possible to enjoy it. I would not stay here again due to the poor service we received from the front desk & the poor quality of the food. Each time we approached the desk they had ample staff: either 2 or 3 working. Each time we approached they were very slow to acknowledge we were standing there. Like, VERY slow. When we arrived to check in both receptionists were on the phone & refused eye contact. After 20 seconds or so, one looked at us annoyed & said "What do you need?" We asked if we could check in & she said "I can TRY to check you in" then she fumbled between holding her phone to her ear & half heartedly typing, while never looking up or welcoming us in any way. Eventually she slid us a key card & we got our room. It was nice we were able to get an early check in but the lack of kindness overshadowed that. Later we came to the desk to purchase something & again, were made to feel we were interrupting something the desk staff was doing. Check out was similar, no smiles, no thank you for staying, just a short "you're set to go" & they were back to whatever else they were working on. Breakfast was some very sad looking sausage, eggs, potato, make your own waffle, boxed cereal, donuts, less-than-fresh diced fruit, overripe bananas & oatmeal that didnt look appetizing. The staff member manning the buffet was helpful, offering me a tray when I couldn't hold my plate easily. The food left me feeling a little unwell. I would suggest looking at staying at a neighboring property if you're looking in this area. We will think twice before choosing a Hampton Inn anywhere again as we left very unimpressed with this one. read more

Not the friendliest staff but a nice hotel in an outstanding location. Very close to the arena and next to a couple dozen restaurants with a beautiful view out the back. Decent pool and spa though the towels provided at the pool area were only adequately sized for a small child. Breakfast was good with a nice assortment and the room though small was nice with comfortable beds. Door lock on bathroom didn't work and the elevator was broken for a portion of our stay but otherwise no complaints. Would stay here again when in the area, and probably awesome in the summer. read more

We stayed here with my girlfriends' parents. I booked for 2 rooms waterfront and side-by-side. The hotel was able to arrange this for us but could not get connecting doors for the 1 king and 2 queens. Still, it was nice that they were accommodating. We tried to check in early at 11AM but the rooms were getting ready in 2 hrs. We tried again at 12:30 PM but staff told us to come back at 3PM. At least, they provided us with the parking pass to put on our car so we could visit Canal Park without worrying for parking. After looking at their sign, I discovered we could get discounted aquarium passes. So, the desk had only 2 left so managed to save $4.50 each per adult ticket:) I guess you have to check ahead to make sure you can get it since they sell out. After coming back from the train ride along St. Louis River, we checked in and found the rooms to be a little small but still roomy enough for us all. I think the 1 king room was roomier so that was good for them to enjoy. The waterfront is indeed waterfront. We had a party below right next to boardwalk but they left later that night. We also tried to get extended checkout at around 1PM since we had an early fishing excursion at 5AM and would get back around noon. The staff told us to check the next day. Also, we would miss breakfast so they would get us breakfast bags early that morning. Well, I at least got to go swimming and get some exercise. Pretty small pool but it was fine and the kids were entertaining. They had foam noodles and beach balls. There were even arcade games next to the pool which was odd to have electronics so close to the pool. Well, we called the next day and was told to check back at 7AM but we did get our brown bags. The checkout went smoothly without problems. Plus, our parking pass was good until 3 or 4PM the day of checkout. We were able to come back to visit some more Canal Park later that day. Plus, the staff was more than accommodating to find where we could get our fishing license. The lobby was always stocked with coffee, tea, apples, bananas, and other goodies. I had the misfortune of staying here for a very loooong week. I booked and prepaid for their "mini-suite." It was noting but a room with a bit of extra space and a sink. They stuck me in a handicapped room which i did not request. When i asked for a non handicapped room, the manager told me I could either check out, move to a standard room or stay where i was. Every day there was a problem with the room. The shower leaked and i had to create a towel dam to stop it from flooding the room. The people on level 2 were so loud and stomping and running around in the room like it was a playground. Finally after a very long 3 nights, i was moved to level 3. I would sleep in my car before staying here. Also, the lake view is a joke. There's literally nothing to see. read more

When asked why our room didn't get cleaned the response was "we changed our housekeeping process due to covid. If you would have come to the front desk to check-in I would have told you"... As I lay here and watch the ships silently glide into port, the sun is coming up like thunder ( I stole that line from writer Rudyard Kipling). Anyhow, checking in was easy, no hassle parking AND......it's RIGHT NEXT TO (drumroll please) - Canal Brewery ! Had dinner there last night and a couple of pints of ale . I've been to better Hamptons. The best thing this one has going for it is the location, but there are hotels on either side. I think next time I am in town I will be staying at Canal Park Lodge next door. Now I am going to sound like a snob. I normally stay at Hilton hotels, and I am Hilton Gold. Normally this allows me to get a room on the floor I want, and they leave snacks in the room at Hamptons. Neither was the case here. I prefer top floors , but I was placed on the first, even though there were open rooms on the top floors. Fine, enough of my b*tching like a spoiled little kid. Maybe I should give the hotel real criticisms. The walls were thin, as was the floor above (thus my preference for the top floor). The room was somewhat worn, but did have a nice sized fridge and LCD TV. The room was pretty cheap @ $89 plus taxes for the night. read more

I stay in hotels 50 + nights a year and I will me moving down Canal street a bit next summer. This is my second time staying here. The first time was had some issues. But these guys are the only HHonors hotel in the area so I braved it a second time. So happy I did! First off, the location is amazing. There is a boardwalk behind the hotel that runs along the lake; perfect for an afternoon run! There are restaurants and shops galore in walking distance. What I really thought was awesome was when you put your Do Not Disturb sign up, housekeeping leaves a bag of fresh towels and toiletries outside your door. Genius! read more

Location, location, location! This Hampton Inn is right on the lake boardwalk in Canal Park. If you are visiting Duluth and Lake Superior, this is the place for you. It's right in the center of all the action at Canal Park and you can walk to all the restaurants, bars, and shopping nearby. As far as the actual property, it is a bit older and the common areas are dated. However the rooms have been remodeled and are right on par with newer Hampton Inns. Free hot breakfast, coffee at all hours in the lobby and they have a patio in the back right on the lake/Boardwalk. Friendly staff too. I will definitely stay here again, and I'm already thinking about my next visit to Duluth! read more

I dreaded the hotel bed for days before arriving (because hotel beds are classically icky) but was surprised to see how fresh and clean this room was. The pure white comforter seemed freshly laundered (like I said, hotel beds are icky, so I was fairly critical) and actually inviting. We had a lake-view room which was cool. The view of that weird building in the harbor surrounded by crashing ice-floes was impressive (January in MN). 4 stars for location, we could walk all through Canal Park, and the nice, clean room. read more

I booked a July weekend for myself at this hotel in conjunction with the big airshow they have up here every couple of years. I travel a LOT for my work, and see a great many mid-range hotels such as Hampton Inns, and have stayed at Hampton Inns in quite a few other places. This is a beautiful property located in the heart of Duluth's Canal Park, with the back side of the hotel facing Lake Superior. If you book a lake-side room, the view is awesome. The only real "fail" of this property for me, and what cost it a star, is that unlike many of the competing properties, there are no balconies or patios, which for a location like this alongside a lake is a crying shame. But other than that, it's the perfect place to bring the family or a special someone, park the car for the day or the weekend, and simply go everywhere you need to in Canal Park on foot. There's plenty of parking in their private lot, and you don't get charged extra for parking, which is a big plus around here. Driving and parking in Canal Park in season can be a trial. There is a great variety of things to eat, drink, see, and do, all within walking distance of the hotel. The staff was friendly, helpful, and professional. Check-in was fast and efficient. My room was always made up perfectly and in a timely manner. I'm not sure when this place was last refurbished, but everything in my room was spotless and in perfect shape. No playing "what's that smell" or "what's that stain" here. That's a hard thing to pull off in a tourist hotel with constant turnover and lots of families with kids staying. Beds and bedding were ridiculously comfortable. The rooms were equipped with refrigerators and microwave ovens, which are a nice convenience if you bring back food from any of the many great restaurants in the area, or if you bring food of your own to prepare. The free breakfast is more than adequate, and while not haute cuisine, has plenty of selections, whether you want to eat healthy or indulge. If you must be a snob about it, you can walk to the Caribou Coffee that's literally across the street. As I said, this is a tourist hotel that sees a lot of families, and you do get a little bit of noise from that, just kids being kids and having fun. I take this in good humor, having had kids of my own, but I get that people's sensitivities to this vary. It was never overly long, loud, or out of control - mostly just when people were leaving or returning to their rooms. The pool, as you would imagine, would be the exception to that, but it's located off by itself at the end of one wing of the hotel. Wireless service was adequate, there were plenty of well-placed electrical outlets in the room, including at the pull-out desk. A nice little fitness room as well. If you need to get some work or a workout done during your stay, you're covered. I suggest a run along the 7-mile lakeshore trail over the monotony of the treadmill, though at times you may find it a bit brisk. read more

My family and I spent the weekend here (April 20th-22nd). The staff here were wonderful. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was due to the hollow walls and doors. We can hear people talking or consistently walking back n forth above us. Other than that, our stay was pleasant. read more

The people in the room overhead sounded like a herd of elephants but they were merely walking around normally. I can't believe all those five star reviews. This place was perfect, as far as I'm concerned. The beds were really comfy. The pillows were awesome. I think they even had different levels of firmness, so you could choose. No gross, ugly, polyester bed spreads that aren't machine washable. No velour blankets either. They had duvets instead. I'm glad most hotels seem to be going that route. The linens were all soft and smelled nice. The bathroom was beautiful. They had free breakfast in the morning-nothing fancy-just yogurt, cereal, fruit, pastries. The normal stuff. The coffee was gooood. There were cool pictures on the room number placards outside every door. That was a really nice touch. There are comfy chairs and couches all over the lobby. There are bowls of candy strewn about. The lobby is warm and inviting. There is a room straight back from the lobby, where you go out to get to the lake, full of more comfy couches and chairs, as well as a bookshelf where you can take a book to read, and leave one in exchange. Lake Superior is right out the backdoor. There is a partially submerged concrete building that people climb on and jump from, so that's fun for the older kids and adults. There are bikes for rent out front. The pool is open until midnight for those over 18, 11pm for those 18 and under. The doors to the hotel lock after 10:30, I think is the time, so you have to use your key to get in, which makes things feel secure. The desk is right near the door, though, of course, so if you forgot your key, they could see you to let you in. The staff was very friendly. There is a computer in the lobby, with free internet access. It met all of my fairly high hotel standards. read more
