This was my second visit to Hamel in the past four years, and they have only gotten better. I first visited right after they opened and they were already a stellar winery. When you arrive, the atmosphere is sleek and open, yet warm and inviting. You will see stuffed badgers around (yes, the animal). That's because the owners are third generation University of Wisconsin "Badgers." Apparently, there are many "Badgers" living around these parts because there are parties and things for alumni. Reservations are a must and with your reservation you will be pampered. Sitting outside the views are over the vines and you feel like you're hundreds of miles away from reality. Your place is set with different types of glasses. Since my nephew (our driver) was with us and wasn't partaking in wine, our host (Marty) took it upon himself to come up with something called a "Dry Tasting." He serves a bottled beverage (non-alcoholic) called "Dry" that can be purchased in some stores. Marty covered the label and had my nephew smell and taste and then guess which flavor it was. It was really fun, as we all tried to help him. Our wines were amazing. We tried a Sauvignon Blanc, a rosé (secret stash), and three lovely reds. Afterwards we got to tour the caves. They were immaculately clean and had barrels and cement egg-looking items that stored wine. Marty was truly the consummate host. I cannot imagine a better tour/wine guide. I don't know how much a tasting costs a Hamel but whatever it is, it is definitely worth every penny. read more

Hamel is one of my favorite vineyards to visit in Sonoma due to the magnificent facilities, laid back atmosphere and service. Highly recommend doing a tasting for two or a large group. Dawn and Nick are so friendly and helpful, they truly make Hamel a one-of-a-kind experience. It's a beautiful setting and the cave tour is informative, you are then led to a table overlooking the valley to enjoy 5-6 wines with plenty of local cheeses and meats. We loved the sauv and rose, the reds are quite big. Highly recommend this tasting for an intimate, fun and relaxing affair. read more

I visited Hamel in 2019, and even though my husband doesn't drink alcohol, we had the best time there. Their option for a dry tasting is so creative and thoughtful and allows non-drinkers/pregnant women to participate in the fun. The dry tasting consists of different flavors of clear soda, and the guest is asked to guess the flavors. I also appreciated that the dry tasting is priced lower since it doesn't involve alcohol. My husband and I were given a tour by a friendly employee who was knowledgeable about the property and wines and offered to take several pictures of us. We did our tasting on the patio, which had gorgeous views of the vineyards. Hamel was our favorite winery during our trip, and I am excited to visit again this summer! read more

One of my absolute, newest obsessions, is Hamel Family Winery. I share not only this wine with friends but Iliterally drag people with me to taste there when they come into town to visit. Ha! Tasting is by appointment only and they don't take a lot per day so ...call in advance. If your last minute up here, call snyway, if they can squeeze you in, they will. The extra effort is way worth it, too! Gorgeous view of Sonoma Mountain and my visit also included a dedicated wine abbassador that only attends to your party, food pairings and great rhone wines. I have only had great experiences coming here for tastings and to pick up my club membership wines. The hospitality that is shown is impeccable. They hold great events (which unfortunately I have always missed) and are a growing winery, with a very modern but comfortable feel. 5 star experience! Really can't say enough good things about my time at Hamel Family. I am in the industry, so I have been to countless wineries and this one truly takes the cake. I called that morning to see if they had any last minute appointments available and Dawn was generous enough to accommodate me and my friend. Before we began the tasting, they took us on a tour of the grounds and caves. The caves have a private room that can host small dinner parties, as well as space where they have their wine club events. I can see Hamel being an awesome wine club to be a part of! Also, the winemaker was eating lunch at the picnic tables outside, so we were lucky enough to meet him as we walked by. After, we sat down in their beautiful tasting room to begin the flight. The flight for that day included a Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon. All were excellent, but my favorites were the Rosé and Zin. You can tell such incredible thought was put into every single little detail here. From the personalized tasting menus to the gorgeous bathrooms.. Everything here is truly top notch! 1 word: Amazing. India King met my girlfriend and I as we drove up and the experience was truly 5 star worthy. Even though we booked the night before we were able to get a a tour of the brand new facility, including walking around the vineyard and caves. After that we had an elegant tasting looking out into the valley from their new estate house. India was extremely informative and was able to answer all the questions we had about production and the estate. Would 100% come back again/recommend for anyone else. Wow, our tour of the Hamel Family vineyard and winery was absolutely outstanding. I was with two other people and we had a personal guide, Eric, who is a sommelier, take us around the property. We got a little bit of everything here - they explained the building, the vineyard, the winery aspects, the caves, and we got to try several of their wines. I could not recommend a visit here highly enough. They had such outstanding wine that we joined their wine club. Eric was an amazing host; he was very knowledgeable and he was able to answer every question we threw at him. I will definitely be coming back here during my next trip to Napa. read more

Words cannot begin to describe what an amazing event we had put on for our group at Hamel Winery. We arrived to a beautifully decorated picnic area overlooking a breathtaking backdrop of one of their vineyards, and there were plenty of Hamel family members and staff to take care of us during our visit. Our group of 30 was truly impressed, from the divine wine selection to the tractor rides exploring the large estate. My personal favorite was the 2011 Rose, followed by the 2008 Cab. The wines were paired with crackers and some authentic Wisconsin cheese, and we sat there for hours socializing with the family and staff, and learning more about what they planned to do with the vineyard in the coming years. Our group was in awe of the amazing setup, tasty wines and genuine hospitality Hamel had for us, and none of us wanted to leave. This was truly one of the highlights of the year for all of us, and after several wine tours I can definitely say Hamel did it best. This is certainly a must-do for anyone heading to wine country, and I know all of our group will be sure to make a stop at Hamel anytime we are in Sonoma again. Cheers! read more

This was the only winery we stopped at in Sonoma (the rest were in Napa) and this one was by far our favorite! Hamel has the best wines in terms of quality and flavor of all the wineries we visited. I love their farming practices...what they jokingly call "organic on steroids." The service was amazing. One-on-one tasting and tour plus the most delicious ricotta with truffle shavings, olive oil and sea salt to accompany the tasting. It was simply amazing. Only complaint is their wine isn't available for us to buy in Texas and their wine club we'd like to join us currently full (please let me know if a spot opens up ). Thanks for a great experience! I am an executive chauffeur for a limousine company and a good chunk of my work is providing wine tours for our clients throughout Napa and Sonoma County's. One day in April I took a group of 10 to Hamel Family Wines Everyone knows that tour guides wait for their clients to be done before taking them to their next destination. As I helped my passengers off the limo bus that day, we were greeted by their wine guide. By this time, I had been driving for this company for about eight months and this was the first time any person representing a wine company acknowledged me, offered me use of the restroom, water in the lobby, place to sit if I needed it in the shade or to sit in the lobby to wait and help myself to water, coffee, etc.. I don't expect to be acknowledged but very often... I would like to use the restroom or find some shade while I wait. I will never forget this place because they are the one place that acknowledged me as a human being on their property and offered me something rather than just taking the paying guests in as fast as they could. So, I wasn't expecting it but I was very grateful and because of his kind gesture I have spread positive word of mouth for their winery. I know I'm not a paying customer for them as I'm not for any of the wineries I visit so it was especially kind of him to acknowledge that I was there anyway. The property is beautiful with extensive gardens manicured with fountains and a glass building to hold their business... it was a simple gesture but I really appreciated it and I felt like this kind man is someone who thinks and believes in people before profits... So thank you Hamley Family Wines for standing out among the giants as the one winery (or hotel for that matter) who cares for everyone who visits your beautiful estate and not just the bottom dollar. I have trouble describing how marvelous this place is. We were lucky enough to make a reservation in the morning for the same day. It is a little tricky to get there - when you get pass the gates, you just have to drive all the way thru to get to the tasting rooms. The structures and architecture of the winery's building is amazing. So much thought was put into designing the buildings and the creation of the wines. I really enjoyed the one-on-one time with our wine ambassador; it made the whole experience at Hamel very intimate. We had our wine tasting in the library, which opened up towards the mountains. If you look out you would see the clouds drift past the mountain and the fields of grape vines. Since there wasn't many people, we sat outside and enjoyed the romantic view with our wines. My favorite were the reds - Isthmus & Hamel Family Ranch. I highly recommend this place to anyone staying near the Sonoma area! read more

By far the most gorgeous winery I've been to in Sonoma. Rolling hills set the backdrop beyond the beautiful vineyards - it's what I've always pictured a great Northern Californian winery to look like. HFW is a smaller operation, owned by a genuinely kind and hospitable family. But their charm is only the beginning - the wine is spectacular! The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon was the biggest crowd pleaser, while the Estate Zinfandel was the perfect compliment to our picnic lunch. Good people, great wine. When I pulled up to this winery several months ago for a tasting, I was stoked. Gorgeous setting, beautiful new facility, immaculate landscaping. I had such high hopes, and figured with the amazing reviews, this place would deliver. My husband and I have an appreciation for good wine, and Sonoma valley has been our favorite place to explore wine country because it's a little more rugged and laid back (and much less 'showy' and commercialized than Napa). We left this tasting not only disappointed in this particular experience, but completely deflated, as it represents a changing wine culture in Sonoma...one that values appearance and prestige over grit, quality winemaking, honest hospitality, and down to earth people. The wine was decent, but definitely not worthy of the price charged. The tour was brief and led by a sweet young woman who appeared barely old enough to partake of the wine herself, let alone be leading the tour. We walked into the cave to see a cement egg with a spotlight on it...kinda cool, but again, left me feeling as if I was missing something. Was this all just an aesthetically pleasing environment (and if anyone appreciates aesthetic beauty it's me) but with no substance to back it up? I hesitated writing this review because nothing bothers me more than negative Yelp reviews that are unfounded and leave businesses floundering for no good reason. I genuinely want this winery to succeed... But they need to come down off their high horse and step into reality for a bit. If you're going to charge $60+ for a tasting, offer some small bites featuring local purveyors for crying out loud. Spend more time with your patrons and less time marketing. Have some humility for your very new place in the wine world...and treat your customers better. We don't like being ripped off. Focus on making your wine better - God knows you have some of the best land on the planet to make that happen. And charge less...MUCH less (which I know will be hard since that new building probably cost you a fortune)... Simplify and focus on what really matters - honoring the land and the people of Sonoma valley - and making some of the best wine not just in California, but the world. read more

She was very knowledgeable about wine and the wines created at the Hamel Family winery. This place is beautiful and all the wines we tasted were extraordinary! What an amazing experience! We were a party of 7 and booked the full tour with food pairing! The location is dreamy and the architecture is modern. Marty, our host, was wonderful. He was open to taking questions and since this was a private tour, he did his best to make us feel at home. Finally, the wine and food was amazing too! Their reds are fantastic. The BEST experience I've ever had at a winery - PERIOD. Just got home from an amazing day at Hamel Family Winery. We were greeted with such enthusiasm, and with such care - I had to rush home to review. Our tour guide was Steven and he was so knowledgable, he answered all our questions but didn't go overboard with us - I've been to some wineries where they just chat way too much! Dawn, who is the general manager (I believe) also came out and spent some time with us, which made us feel really welcome. I had family here from Ireland and New Zealand - and we all agreed this was the best tasting we've ever had. Couldn't recommend it more.
