If I could give zero stars, I would. I brought in my $1,500 designer coat for cleaning, and they completely ruined it. When I raised the issue, the staff refused to take responsibility and claimed it wasn't their fault, despite the fact that I've had this coat professionally cleaned many times without any problems. The man I spoke to was rude and dismissive. They also said they would only consider compensating me if I gave them the coat for an "insurance investigation," which felt like a scam. I brought 2 blazers and a down parka here to be cleaned. The blazers were arranged well on the hanger with a tissue lining. I was most impressed with the way the down parka was cleaned. You know the big down parka you wear every day in the dead of Northeastern winters, the greatest workhorse in your wardrobe. Well mine is at least 8 years old now, and I didn't clean it last year to be frugal; so it was quite gray or smudged in some areas if you looked closely. (Luckily I bought a hunter green color so it's not that noticeable). The faux fur hood lining was fluffed well and the entire coat outside and inside looked nice and fresh. It looks like new again. I have had this coat cleaned about 4 times and I think this time is the nicest I have ever received it back from a cleaning. read more

I agree they do a good job but I gave them a one star rating due to their illegal practices! I had an $18 charge. I pulled out my credit card to pay and was informed that cards are accepted for fees $20 or more. Folks, this is an ILLEGAL practice!! I returned with cash and a screen shot of the website containing the details. This woman basically ignored me. She just wanted me to leave. She was snide and disrespectful. The minimum in NJ and the country is $10 period!! This business should be sanctioned. The problem is that they have no competition!! That is the last time they will get my money. I typically don't feel the need to write reviews, but I have to defend Halsey Cleaners. I have been going here weekly for over a year and have had great service week in, week out. I've had all types of services here (dry cleaning, alterations, etc) and have been more than happy each time. Pricing is very fair across the board. Halsey Cleaners has been in business for over 18 years and it's a shame that a few bad comments can hurt this business. Halsey Cleaners did not clean my clothes. They were returned on hangers in bags, but smelled like body odor. They did not smell when I dropped them off. I called for a refund, and the person working said she did not believe me. I went to the storefront, and they accused me of just not wanting to pay, refusing to refund me. My clothes smell disgusting. I think they put them into a pile of dirty clothes, and then hung them up without ever cleaning them. Absolutely disgusting, and the people working there are beyond rude!! read more

I have been using Halsey for eight years. They are reliable. They also do take care with special textiles. I inherited a Japanese wedding kimono with lots of embroidery that had been on display in a living room and had gathered dust over time. Hardly anyone knows how to clean them and one that did was going to charge me over $1000. Halsey charged me $100 and packed it in an archival box. I also received a Chinese Manchu robe (a jifu) from the 1900's. It was very fragile with a food stain that had probably been on it for years. They managed to remove the stain. Impeccable service. This was, hands down, the worst experience I have had with a dry cleaner. I recently moved from NYC where I used a variety of dry cleaners with no issue at all. I recently moved to Newark and decided to use Halsey on a friend's recommendation. During my first trip, the staff was very nice and professional. I needed a dress dry cleaned for a gala, and also needed a small stain removed on the dress. They marked the stain and said it would be ready the next day. I pick up the dress an hour before the gala and see a huge white mark where the stain had been! I don't know if it was the chemicals they used or what, but I had to put a sweater over the dress to attend the gala, and swore never to return. However, and this is CLEARLY my own fault, a few months later, I needed to get my whole wardrobe dry cleaned. I figured that since I just needed dry cleaning, and no stain removal, this would be fine. I also spoke to others who had gone here with no issue. So I went and brought 14 items to the drycleaners--basically, my entire wardrobe. Again, the staff was very kind and professional and said they would deliver the items to my apartment the following week. It was delivered even earlier than expected, which was a pleasant surprise. I took out the first dress to wear and went to work. When I got to work I smelled a very bad smell and thought it was my office. After Febrezing to no avail, I looked down and my nose caught a whiff--it was my dress! The whole dress smelled rotten and sour, like the chemicals used had gone bad or were left on too long. I doused my dress in perfume to get throuigh the day. After I went home, I smelled the rest of my clothes--they all had the same smell. Completely writing this dry cleaner off, I was just going to go about my business and just never go there again. After speaking to others, however, they urged me to go back and explain what happened, and ask for a refund (especially since this was the second time an issue had occurred). So this morning, I did just that. I went back, showed them the first dress, showed them the second order of clothes, and asked for a refund. They said they would clean it again. I said no thanks, because every single time they did so something went wrong (I didn't use these words, I was kinder). They refused, saying they had already done the work. I said that the work was done badly, however, since the clothes smelled, so that didn't seem like a justification. They said they could clean it again and if I didn't like it, I never had to come back. After saying this was a horrible compromise, and after they vehemently maintained they would not refund me for the clothes, I left. Again, I fully understand this was my fault for going back the second time. Since this is the only dry cleaner I have seen in downtown Newark, I'm sure the monopoly helps them get away with certain practices. However, I will NEVER use this dry cleaner again. read more

I chose this dry cleaning place based on distance and lack of options from my apartment, but the service overall is just ok. What turned me off the most is the staff and spotty pricing. I brought in several items and one was a dress that was knee length. The woman who rings me up just says "oh I think the owner will charge you $5 extra cause this is a full length dress. I'll just tack on $5." I said are you sure, to which she answers, "yeah I'm pretty sure." She never makes a single call and just determined to tack on more money without consultation. I did get my clothes fairly quick, but when I went to pick it up the woman (different one) was so rude to me that it completely ruined the business as a whole in my opinion. read more
