October 9, 2021 I…read morehave been a patient of "Dr. Linna" for about 15 years. I have taken the time to read all the Yelp reviews because I was curious if other patients think as highly of her as I do. Well, it's pretty impressive when people take the time to say so many good things about a person so deserving to receive the accolades. Without any hesitation I endorse and ratify every review. So much of what I was prepared to write a book about has been said. Since at the time of this writing, mine is the most current review, I can say "nothing has changed" -- you're still talking about a 5-star dentist, assisted by a 5-star small staff -- and a special "shout out" to Joanne, who has been there 17 years manning the front desk, and is always friendly, very efficient and often knows what Dr. Linna is going to say before she says it. But let me add a few things not mentioned in the other reviews. Start with courage. To leave her country of birth -- the USSR/Ukraine -- where you are born, raised, educated and working as a decreed mechanical engineer, to immigrate to the U.S. with very little other than a college education, and to start over by attending dental school in San Francisco, and then after sufficient practical experience to establish her own private practice as an entrepreneur, takes guts and lots, and lots of hard work and the willingness to take risk. To do all that, overcoming so many obstacles, but not to have it harden you, and, indeed, to end up being one of the kindest, warmest, most empathetic and FUNNIEST people I have ever known, is absolutely extraordinary. And, no pun intended, but she's patient, for I'm the type of patient that asks questions and likes to get a summary of what she intends to do before she begins her work. And then, like the confident yet modest expert she is, she provides me with the big picture and then all the details, right on down to the cellular level at times. I've never had a dentist or doctor who sincerely cared so much about me as an individual patient and was so focused was on providing the best treatment possible.

However, I had such a great first experience with Dr. Vasanth and Paola that I have to give credit where credit is due. My first visit was just for a routine cleaning, and the scheduling + new patient forms were all quite easy to do on their website. I also received a few reminder texts in the days leading up to the appointment. From the get-go, it was evident Dr. V and Paola had taken the time to properly review my insurance plan, as they made recommendations for x-rays and upcoming visits based on my plan benefits and timing. Paola also pointed out fluoride was not covered by my insurance before asking me whether I wanted it or not for my cleaning - this attention to detail and transparency is above and beyond what I've experienced at other dentists. As for the cleaning itself, Dr. V handled it thoroughly and with a gentle touch, while consistently checking throughout to make sure I was comfortable. She has a very bubbly, friendly personality and is super easy to talk to as well. Overall, just a very pleasant experience and I'm so glad I found this place to be my team for all things dental.

I would add that she is also a perfectionist which is a darn good thing in a dentist. I have had other dentists who have a hard time working on my mouth because of my small jaw. Some dentists have been very impatient. Not Dr McCarthy. She is so consistently kind and patient that I never worry about my appointments. She shares the office with her brother Dr Tim McCarthy who I'm sure is equally as great. I have seen him helping a daughter get her very elderly mother (his patient) in the car after her appointment. Kindness seems to be a family trait. I used to work at a think tank at Stanford University. We had visiting scholars from around the world. Many times they would have a need for emergency dental work and I always recommended Dr McCarthy. They were always happy with her work and the prices... For context, the wisdom teeth came out 15-20 years ago and numerous dentists over the years were not able to figure this out. I've even been told that I may just have bad gums and tooth loss in the future are possibilities. On my last visit (03/2024) Dr. Yu and his team tried again to force me to agree to an X-ray. I was told if I don't have an X-ray taken I cannot come to this dentist office again. He will basically kick me out. I repeated that I am physician and have zero indication for an X-ray. To prove his point, he took what felt like the metal handle of one of the instruments and hammered on each and every tooth of mine. This was very uncomfortable, but zero pain. He was firm that he won't accept me as patient if I don't have an X-ray taken. I have attached a summary of the guidelines from the American Dental Association (ADA) and the guidelines are very clear: 1) there is no fixed recommended frequency 2) as low as reasonably achievable 3) based on findings from patient history and clinical examination So, NO! based on ADA guidelines I do not need an X-ray. Instead of following ADA guidelines, Dr. Yu follows his financial guidelines and wants me exposed to unnecessary X-rays just to cash in. I can't recommend this dentist at all!
